🤔 If I may offer my 2 cents.... 1 - Your filter floss can be buried in your garden as it too contains that detritus your plants will love. While burying it isn't necessary, it will guarantee that it won't get carried off by some curious urbanized critters. 2 - Also, I noticed the lovely brick barrier around you flower bed. Consider a spare brick or a large enough rock in the flower bed to utilize when banging out your sponges. This keeps that detritus in the garden & you won't have to hose down the driveway. (Plus, the rain will eventually wash off the rock & spread the yummy nitrogen rich waste into the garden). Of course, those two cents come with the same disclaimer you used about not doing this with edible or fruiting plants. The main concern is salmonella being spread to your plants. The plants can & will eventually bounce back, but if they bare anything edible, it will contain the bacteria & could potentially infect the eater. I'm in the process of building an aquaponic system for my grandfather & am trying to come up with a grow bed plan that will satisfy the needs of a small pond. That being said, I'll leave the rest of the turtle advice for the Turtle Girl here, as I too am in the student chair over here...😏

You can also open the pump the bottom of it just pops off usually a lot of sludge builds up in there I also add polyfill on the outside of the baskets to filter any water going around it and flush out the hoses with warm water to get any sludge that builds up inside of it

I run my 75 gallon tank for my Yellow Bellied Slider with TWO of the Cascade 1000 filters. They are so easy to clean and to use. But I don't take the hoses out. I turn the water off at the valve, and then unscrew the valves to clean the tank. That way, the water stays in the hoses, and when you hook the filter back up, you don't have to prime anything, because the water stays in the hoses. I'm curious though, I've always read that you should NOT reuse the carbon, because it loses effectiveness after a month or so. I go through a lot of carbon to keep my "Wick" in clean water! But I too, use the pot scrubbies as filter media, along with polyester fill (just make sure you don't get the fire retardant stuff- the chemical is no good for the aquatic life!). I enjoy your videos!

I have changed my Cascade for years but could not get it to fill. I watched several channels and came up empty, till I found you. After watching you I noticed the rubber sleeve after the last stage was assembled on the filter NOT the pump head like mine was stuck too. I guess I had no suction. Thanks for going over the assemble and not just interested in background music like many do. I also did not push up into the hose the last part of the tightening part that attaches to the pump head. I had a leak and took it appart and noticed I did not hear the click when puching the compression end part into the hose. Reassembled and no more water on the floor. Thanks. I have African Cichlids.

I find it easy to have 3-4 smaller buckets of tank water and working my way along dunking the stuff in each one in order so by the end bucket everything is alot cleaner. The disposable filter wool sheet is on the top basket with media under it in my basket stacks, it helps keep the rest cleaner from lots chunks ive found. The media and courser filter sponges are in the lower 2 layers.

Try putting the batting/filter floss under the lava rock. It will keep the biological media much cleaner. Also try pinky filter floss instead of batting. You can rinse and reuse it a few times, and it's cheap.

awesome video! I have a red eared slider that I found by accident, poor thing might have been injured we found him next to my car one morning, caught him just in time! We had no water sources and he was a newborn, so we think maybe a bird dropped him. Fast forward to 17 years later hes big and healthy. I feel bad he spent his life in captivity but he's so big and friendly, and I want to do more for him including a new big tank and basking area. Any tips or things you found to be super important for your adult big turtles? I don't want him to be sad or unhealthy or depressed that he's in a tank all by himself minus his little fish friends we got him. Any tips or ideas you thought were successful?

Thanks for your videos. I am getting ready to set up a 75 gallon tank for my painted turtle. This is all new for me. I think I'm going to get the same filter that you have. How often do you clean your filter? And how often and how much water change does a person have to do?
@bethanysummers33772 жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of filter, a big canister filter probably every 6 months, I usually do 12 months. Some people say 3 months. A internal filter would be every 2 weeks. Water changes every 2 weeks, half the tank usually a gravel cleaner hose.
@martimneves44214 жыл бұрын
Hii How regularly do you clean and change the filter media?
@woodworkerroyer84974 жыл бұрын
The carbon absorbs some bad chemicals, and medications (you take out to treat the disease, then add back when you are done). It also supposedly takes away some odors, thought I have never noticed a difference between a tank with carbon, and one without. Also, what kind of cichlids are those? Convict or some kind of frontosa?

First, I just want to say thank you for all of your awesome videos! I'm the Naturalist/Education Coordinator at an outdoor education center on the Chesapeake Bay and we have 7 aquatic turtles (along with a few other reptiles). I've been in the field for 8 years but have had very little training when it's come to turtle care. I basically have to figure things out on my own and I recently stumbled upon your videos and find them super useful! We have a 13 year old female terrapin who is about to get a tank upgrade and we just bought this same filter. I was curious about what media I should use because I didn't think the media it comes with would be enough. I'm hoping to replicate what you have here and see if that will work for her. If you have any other media advice, I would love to hear it since I'm still a bit of a novice on this canister filter thing. Anyways, keep up the amazing work and keep sharing your knowledge and passion with the world!
