Actually, when Red Ear Sliders live for a LONG time (past 15+ yrs old) they lose pigmentation and it makes them only appear melanistic. The pure melanism gene is VERY hard to come by and naturally occuring melanism is often times from old age, not pure genetics.

I used to have a pet painted turtle that i stole from a pond his name was Romeo. His shell was also cracked along the bottom almost like a huge scar and it makea him very easy to point out of the few at the pond so we chose him. Eventually Romeo got bigger but he believe it or not "ran" away.. We found him like 5 years later just waaaay bigger same crack/scar on his shell. Turtles are awesome pets. Wish i had another.
