Doc, want to apologize for commenting on a video of yours the other day calling out the masks. The only time I’ve commented on your posts and it was negative. Love your stuff as I’m now so into wine it isn’t even funny, and Sangiovese is my fav too. Thanks for all you do. Scott.

Great video! Yes I can tell Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has fallen out of favor because as a retailer I don't see my distributors carry these wines often. But great to see some focus on them and to help me learn more. And I don't mean to go off tangent here, but have been meaning to ask you about this. New World wines tend to be more fruit forward. And I've wondered how wine makers go about doing this. Do new world winemakers focus a lot more on carbonic maceration to get this? I think the average consumer tends to have a somewhat 'romantic' view of how wine is made when there's a lot of science involved. While I know there's a lot of science involved I admit I think in the past I tended to think about processes used in a simplified manner. That winemakers used carbonic maceration, malolactic fermentation and so on as a means to itself. But now I think winemakers have an idea of where they want a wine to be in style but of course nature is unpredictable. And the winemakers use these methods to a certain degree to nudge the wine towards where they want it. Anyway maybe most people aren't concerned on how the wine is made and simply how it tastes. But I guess I'm curious about how it's made. And I guess eventually I just need to go to a wine area and visit wineries and ask questions lol. But since you've visited many places and winemakers, was curious what you knew about some of these processes. Or maybe if you thought it might be worth making a video going over some of this.

There’s A LOT that goes on in the cellar. The line between New World and Old World styles of wine is blurred. That fruitiness is due to a lot of factors, not necessarily Carbonic Maceration

Hey! Great video! One suggestion, you could make a video where you have a set of good wines, but from different countries! One from Italy, another one from Spain, Portugal and France. All from the same vintage. In the end you could give your personal thoughts and which one you would recommend for a particular occasion. Thanks for the videos! Cheers

@@drmatthewhorkey One suggestion for the Portuguese Wine, it's a bottle called Dona Maria. Dona Maria is from the producer Julio Bastos. Julio Bastos is a well known guy in Portugal when it comes to wine production. He co-owned Quinta do Carmo in Portugal with the Rothschild family (The same one from the famous Pauillac, Bordeaux wine). They brought to Portugal (More specifically to Alentejo) a grape from France called Alicante Bouschet. According to international wine guru and Master of Wine, Jancis Robinson, "Alicante Bouschet is thought to have found its true home in Portugal's Alentejo". So therefore I would recommend Dona Maria as the Portuguese wine for your tasting. Cheers
