[TUT] 3Delight Renderer - The Basics

I've been using the 3Delight Render Engine since the beginning of the year and I am liking it quite a lot. This is a basic introduction to this new exciting render engine to get you started.

Hi, great video, it got me to start using 3Delight, I liked the cloud rendering feature :) I almost always use an ambient occlusion pass in my renderings, any idea on how to do that in 3Delight? I tried googling this but with no luck.

I actually just started testing Octane for Houdini so we'll see. It's come a long way from where it was just a couple of years ago.

Hey, newbie question, how do you choose which folder to render to? Images going to a different place than my project settings are in Maya. Cheers!

In Houdini I can specify a path for where I want the render to go, however using the $HIP in Houdini specifically puts the files in the same directory as your Houdini file. Does that help?

Brand new? 😂3Delight has been publicly available since 2000. I used it since 2002 or so. You probably meant it‘s brand new to you.

Brand new to Houdini? First mention of a 3DL beta was from 2019, but it really didn't start having enough features to make it useful until late last year/early part of this year. 😂😂

@@RightBrainedTutorials 3Delight was RenderMan compliant from 1999-2017. And Houdini always had excellent RenderMan support. So people were using 3Delight with Houdini before there was an official plug-in. That was the beauty of the RenderMan Interface standard during those years. Support RIB & RSL and there were a bunch of renders that you could use that with.

In fact, you can still download an old 3Delight version (12.x) and use that with Houdini's built-in RIB/RSL support right now. See e.g. forums.odforce.net/topic/12196-3delight-and-houdini/
