Tutorial #44 The XY Wing part 2

Usually I get about half way through and either the numbers all start dropping into place or I am left with sets of two numbers in all my remaining squares. At this point I think this is where I need to learn how to deploy the XY wing tactic. It makes sense but it will take me a while to get my head around the method for spotting them. Oh my god. I just solved a difficult puzzle, which I struggled and could never complete in the past, using xy wing. Only 1 trick. That trick makes all the difference. This is the trick that I lack in the past. Thanks again Robin. Take care.

Hello thanks you for your question. In a puzzle the pivot could be either a 4 or a 5 The point is that whatever number it is, either the 4 or 5 then the cell to the right of the pivot will always be a 7 . Hope this helps. By the way....Sorry for the poor lighting. Robin

Why can't you use the 41 as the pivot if the 9 was still unsolved? How do you know which of the two numbers in the straight line is the pivot?

Hello Kathleen. I am not sure where on this video you are referring. Firstly a general rule of an XY wing is that there are only 3 little numbers and each of the 3 cells cell has 2 of those numbers. The pivot can" SEE" the other cells as one of the cells is in the same row and the other cell can "be SEEN" by the pivot because it is in the same block.

@SudokuGuy @SudokuGuy Thank you for answering. So, two of the numbers have to be in the same block? The number that isn't in the same row as the pivot has to be in the same block as the pivot? Will this rule clear up for me which cell in the line is to be considered the correct pivot? My confusion comes as a triangle has three points. It seems to me that often either point or cell in the row could serve as the pivot, and I'm not sure what makes one cell in the row be the pivot over the the other cell in the row. The two "clock hands" can often join on either one of the cells in the straight line, making either one into a pivot. Sorry if my question seems confusing. I understand.

Thank you Mr Sudoku! It happened most of the times especially when you reached the bottom page. Is it possible not to have the words on the screen since they keep on blocking the views including blocking your face. Sometimes the words are wrong which defeats the purpose.

If you put your mouse over the video, you'll see a "CC" button in the lower right corner of the video. It stands for "closed captioning". If it has a red line under the button, then that means the closed captioning is turned on, and you'll see subtitles (or "the words", as you've called it). Just click that "CC" button to turn the captioning off, and the words will go away. The words are sometimes wrong because they're generated by a computer that automatically writes what it thinks is being said, but computers aren't very good at that because everyone speaks a little differently. They aren't written by a human, and the computer makes lots of mistakes. Hope this helps.

Thank you for yet another very interesting tutorial. Quick question: must XY wings always be just three numbers on the pivot square and two numbers in each of the wing squares? My more difficult puzzles often have more small-number possibilities in every square.

For the XY wing...yes there must be 3 numbers involved. In very difficult puzzles you may have to put all the possible small numbers in an empty cell but not at the beginning stages.I suggest you look at tutorials #20 and up where I show many ways to eliminate small numbers.

Must we know this technique for extreme sudoku? Or another hard techniques such as swordfish and skyscraper? I can't understand that hard methods but I can solve hard sudoku without them. I solve them around 15 - 30 minutes

It depends on which algorithm used to compose the puzzle. The XY wing is hard to spot. You are correct in saying that many advanced puzzles can be solved using other techniques. The more techniques you know the less you will become stuck.

@@SudokuGuy Thanks for replying. Love your cheerful disposition and humility. Have you done follow-along medium difficulty Sudoku puzzles, if not could you please do so. I find that is the best way to learn fast after learning a few basics, rather than watching a lot of videos on the rules and techniques. You could simply refer to the technique you are using while highlighting the relevant houses, without going deep into the rule, as you have already done so in other videos. You could then post the relevant links for the rules used in solving the puzzle in the description box. Sounds like a plan?
