A fun, step-by-step video on how to solve a sudoku puzzle from the beginning to the end.
Many procedures, tricks and techniques are used, plus a couple of rules.
VERY IMPORATNT.... Some subscribers have told me they are not getting notification of when I upload a new video. KZbin has been working on this issue. I am pleased to inform all my subscribers that if you click on the bell at the right side of the red subscription button, you should receive a notification from KZbin that I will be uploading something new on a particular day and time.
I will only be putting up notifications once or twice a month.
One advantage of doing this on my channel is that when I premier a new video you have the opportunity to chat with me as well if you wish.
Thanks to all of you for your comments underneath the videos.
Also, if you wish to contact me, go to my web site www.sudokuguy.com and send an email to support@sudokuguy.com
Tim Dolan pointed out a place 7.50 where I jumped ahead. You were right Tim. I wondered how long it would be before sometone noticed. Thanks for your comment Tim
To see all puzzles and FAQs, go to www.sudokuguy.com
Please subscribe. It's FREE and you will be notified when a new tutorial is uploaded.
NEW: You can now go to my web site and see an INDEX OF VIDEOS under strategy headings. Click on the number, and it will take you to the video of interest.

Well done kind sir. I chuckled a bit when you were doing this puzzle. I had accidentally discovered the exclusion rule. I was calling it the "odd man out" because I didn't remember you mentioning rule of exclusion, or my feeble brain didn't comprehend it. Such as when you had the 2-8, 2-8 and the 2-9. Rule of exclusion meant the 2 of the 2-9 was impossible and therefore could be removed and the 9 put in the box

7:49 - 7:55 Why was 4 placed in R1 & R2, C1 of BLOCK 5? Why was R1C2 discarded? Thanks a bunch! Anybody can pitch in to help ;) EDIT: Is it because we were only solving for the 4th column of the overall matrix? EDIT 02: I understand the reason; it's because of conjugate 7 in R3 of Block 5.

The 4 at 7:50! I GET IT!!! This genius was thinking several steps ahead and had already realized that a 7 was going to end up in row three, column 4. He just didn’t mention it. Can’t do two things at once. In the video at 8:50, you’ll see where this happens at 9:25. But he had already solved this in his mind minutes earlier! If he had actually shown this first, a lot of questions would have been avoided. Wish I was that smart!!!

@@SudokuGuy Hi thanks for replying back. In its base form it means that there is only one solution to a puzzle. But sometimes on the harder puzzles, I find myself stumped over some of the twin pairs. They explain the rule in sudokuprimer.com/ambiguity-rule.php and there is another you tuber by the name of Harold Nolte who shows them. I just prefer the method of how you teach because it is very slow and you show your notes of possible numbers in a cell.

I'm always interested in other techniques. My own method uses the same process on every sudoku, unless quite hard, and uses no pencil marks. I simply start at the top row and memorize all missing numbers in that row. I then test each empty spot moving left to right to see if only of those numbers is possible. After that I test the missing numbers in the row one by one to see if they only work in one position. Then I go on to all the other rows repeating the process. Once I have gone through all the rows once, I repeat the same process with the columns. After that, I repeat the process for the nine cells. At this point I will have never backtracked or changed my focus. I've done one single process from beginning to end. At this point I will have many numbers filled in, possibly completing the puzzle, but if not, I just start back at the top and repeat the entire process again and again until I have solved or can't fill any more numbers with this process. Since there are no pencil marks, I then find matching pairs, and use various techniques to see if they force numbers to be locked into position. Beyond that It gets very hard to visualize and as a last resort I will use pencil marks. Most often I can solve without them though.

Yes it will Mn. Lots depend on the puzzle and what techniques you know and what you spot and when. Most puzzles have 2 sections. The first section is where you buld up enough numbers by using a procedure and then spotting a technique. After you have solved it then the rest of the puzzle falls into place. Watch my tutorial #64 which is being uploaded in July. It shows that once you have solved numbers by using a technique such as spotting a pattern, then the rest of the puzzle is easily completed

Love you videos. I have a question dear sir. I have formed a habit in my short time of playing Sudoku (thanks to you...for playing the game not my habit) I start with 1 and go through 9. Info through once and then a 2nd time to make sure I am accounting for all the implications from the previous solves. After that I begin looking for the houses that contain the fewest empty spots, patterns etc. I have noticed NO ONE else does this. At least not any of the good players teaching tutorials on KZbin. Lol It seems most people actually keep it pretty random in terms of just looking for things that stand out. You use a Colombo section, Row section technique, ALTHOUGH I suspect you may not use so so religiously when solving puzzles outside a tutorial. I feel like my technique may affect my interpretation of the board, or limit what I see based on routine and expectations. Or does it not matter?

Benjamin Henry I thought everyone solved these puzzles like that. Start with the 1's thru to the 9's. Then repeat the cycle unless something obvious or easy comes along. Doing it randomly for me causes more confusion and it takes longer. You end up missing critical solves. Also, when I complete all of a certain number I indicate that by putting a dot to the left of the big box. 1 at the top down to 9 at the bottom. That way I don't waste time searching for numbers I've already finished. I guess it's whatever works best for everyone.
