Watching this carving is hypnotic, to think so much skill and attention goes into such a simple detail is amazing.

Those little planes look like a blast! I've been a woodworker for years and have recently became interested in guitar building. My first venture is going to be a kit guitar which I think is a good place to start. After that I plan to build a Tele or Strat(something with a flat top), but eventually I plan to hand shape a Les Paul top. Can't wait!

great great video(s), I love my thumb (violin maker´s) plane, I´ve got one 40mm with curved bottom and I use it as much as I can. Definitely have to buy a few more, bigger ones. I don´t even use chisels/gouges when hand carving the tops, the thumb plane is a great help when carving :)

I've been using hand tools for forty-five years and the experience of making a controlled cut into wood with a razor sharp tool can only be understood by those who have experienced the pleasure. No sanding dust, quicker results, and a tool burnished surface. Beware though, your most important tool eventually wears out; your hands! I now pace myself, let power tools do more of the rough work, and keep on shaping.

Ben, Where do you purchase your flame maple from in the UK? I bought a set recently but payed a ridiculous price for it on eBay, I cant seem to find any local places that deal in nicer woods so I'm a bit stuck. Wonderful job on this guitar by the way, it takes a lot of skill to work with such highly figured wood without tear-out.

Why does a vibrato bar bridge affect the amount of curve on the top compared to a TOM style bridge? It doesn't seem like it should matter what the bridge type is.

@IPGuitars
@IPGuitars 9 жыл бұрын
Conor Well, if you're not used to them you WILL develop blisters and might get some cramps in your fingers :D although, I barely noticed. I used the thumbplanes for like 3 hours straight and afterwards was like: "Oh... damn, would you look at that?" I had blisters on three of my fingers, worst of which, the thumb (big surprise right?). But I didn't really care, they are amazing tools and they were fun to use. You kinda lose yourself in the work really :D hehe -T
