Tutorial: How to unlock a lotion pump

Sometimes when dealing with lotion/soap pumps that are designed to fit multiple styles of bottles, they can get stuck in the “locked” position when they are brand new. We try our best to demonstrate to customers the easiest way to unlock a stuck pump top, but once in a while we might miss someone, or a customer will get home and have completely forgotten and end up getting understandably frustrated in the attempts to get the pump to work.

You're using the easy kind WITH directions! Some pump bottles have no directions and just twist for days without unlocking! *I finally figured it out though. So if anyone comes looking for the difficult pump instructions, wrap a towel around the base under the collar, push really hard down and twist. My bare hands couldn't do it but the towel gave added grip.

Everytime a start a new bottle of CeraVe I go through this hell. I used to follow another video but for some reason that women’s technique didn’t work for me today. Your idea did. Thank you so much. But I swear. I’m about done with CeraVe . Dermatologist recommended or not. The hell with them if they can’t come up with a user friendly container!

Thank you for this! I had to wrap the "base" (of a plastic bottle of lotion) with a Kleenex then use pliers to hold it as my grip wasn't enough, but it worked!

Thank you for making this video!! I've been fighting with a bottle of Pantene conditioner everytime I'm washing my hair. Wind up just taking the whole top off and putting dollops in my hand. Never thought of taking the nozzle out and twisting it from there.

Thanks for making this video. Definitely helped. even works on the new suave body wash bottle. Which has a thicker pump on top and no arrows to tell you which way to turn it, but I just turned it the same way as the old bottle. Worked like a champ. Thanks

It was slippery using my fingers for the inside part, so I used a piece of napkin to hold it in place as I twisted it to get it opened. It worked for me. Thanks for the video.

I used a jar opener or pliers would have worked too, to grasp the part where you need to hold tight. Thank you for posting!

😂 The tips helped, I finally, finally got the pump to work. But only after 2 tries, slopping a bunch of expensive soap on the side of the bottle and in the sink. The soap made it so slippery, I had to rinse the stem and then use gloves. I hope I never have to close it. Thanks again for the video 👍

This worked on a Lubriderm bottle even though there is no Open/Close words imprinted on the top. I pulled the pump Cleaned it off Gripped the barrel of the pump with a small pair of channel locks and turned the top till it released and popped up. Mahalo!

Pro tip: If a towel still doesn't help you get a good grip, use a pair of pliers to hold the bulky part. Vice grips work great.

I just bang the pump sideways on the bathroom counter (like you do a jar top on the kitchen counter). Keeps germs out of the bottle, too!

I didn't want to hold the Tube part by hand so I used pliers squeezing lightly to twist open the pump. Thanks for the How To, they are hardly instinctive and no info on the label.

I could never get this to work for me on my pump bottles. I finally went to the Dollar Store and bought some cheap soap dispensers which had a pump top which was already unlocked and simply stuck them on top of my lotion bottles.
