I really like that seam binding. It looks almost like organza ribbon. You dyed it beautifully. When I I made my very first junk journal, a mini, I put one signature in upside down so I had to take it all apart. It's the little trial & errors that make us pros, lol! On to part 3!

This really turned out really nice. I was skeptical at first using all the mix of papers, etc. came together beautifully. Also thanks for the recent slew of tuts. My husband keeps asking me why I would make and use a junk journal. To tell the truth I really don't know what to use it for. Can you help me with this. My hubby is a writer not an artist. I have very recently started painting again after 20 years. I've been researching all kinds of art/crafts/paper rafting and keep seeing junk/art journals. Thanks G.
@PinkPoodleCrafts
@PinkPoodleCrafts 8 жыл бұрын
+Geraldine Parsons Hey Geraldine... welcome to my channel!! I am happy to have you! Junk journals can be used for anything, you can make them into art journals if you use things that are a bit heavier for pages and gesso over the pages and do some practice art on rather than wasting a canvas you can use the journal to practice techniques and things you might learn on youtube.... or you can put some writing paper in it and make it a writing/art journal or writing/photo album and either use it to write like a regular journal and add some art work about your journal entry or add photos and write about what the photo is or whats happening in the photo. They are great to take with you on vacations or if you have to sit in a dr's office for a while you can bring your junk journal and doodle with colored pencils or another writing/art utensil that can fit in your purse like small set of markers etc....so the possibilities are endless with junk journals... tell that to your skeptic hubby lol :)

It sounds like the way you're attaching the pages is much like a Midori, I could be wrong. I love your little sound bites written out to readlol, keeps it interesting especially when it's a race to see if you can finish b4 it goes away! lol I really like your channel!
@PinkPoodleCrafts
@PinkPoodleCrafts 8 жыл бұрын
+Joann Wilson Midori's signatures arent actually sewn in, they are just put underneath an elastic that goes around the cover... which is another easy way to bind a journal, its better for midoris since they are used more for writing and for daily use, then you can take out the separate signatures and replace them as needed whereas mine are sewn in :) I plan on making a faux-dori (a fake midori) at some point because ive been dying to try it :) Im glad you like my channel... I like YOU! :)

Would it work if you sewed the signatures in using a sewing machine? I have never tried making a junk journal of any kind but excited about doing this one.
@PinkPoodleCrafts
@PinkPoodleCrafts 8 жыл бұрын
+Vickie Copeland Actually, funny you mentioned that... i just got my sewing machine up and running and i tried making a fabric covered journal and sewing in the signatures in with my machine...i got 3 of the signatures in and then the needles kept busting... i dont think Im going to try it again, not without a much thicker needle, and someone suggested a "jeans" needle... which would make large holes so Im not sure I want that. it might be good to sew the cover together and then put in the signatures with a pamphlet stitch by hand... you can always sew in some pockets with the machine to add that cute sewn element but i think trying to sew a bunch of stacked pages, might be a bad idea. At least for me it was. :)

I like your video on using various items to make junk journal.. I feel that you could help me. I am traveling to Japan this summer and want to make a junk journal/smash book while traveling, so I dont want to sew or have to cut down items. No painting or scrapbook paper will be used. I would have to tape stuff together with hinges or smash into a book with tape or glue. I really wanted to do a combination of both to use euphemera including shopping bags/plastic bags, post cards and paper, to make the page inserts for a smash/junk/memories/journal book. I am staying in hostels so I dont have much room to spread out. I know it will be quite large because of the ingredients. I will be taking a very basic scrapbook kit with me which I will be making a video on. The junkier the better. Thanks for any help or ideas you have.
@PinkPoodleCrafts
@PinkPoodleCrafts 8 жыл бұрын
+floridagoods First of all... I am SO JEALOUS of your trip to Japan... you have room in your suitcase for me right? I will contort so I will fit nicely and i wont say a word i swear! lol Im DYING to go to Japan, its on my bucket list! Id say bring me back ephemera from Japan but it sounds like you'll be using it all in your journal... which again... IM SO JEALOUS that youll get to make a journal out of Japanese ephemera! If you tell me you are going to visit either the Sanio or Daiso stores while there... my head will seriously explode! Maybe if you smuggle me back a news paper or some menus or something, i can repay you in happy mail from me? But yes about your journal... I would suggest using some seam binding and not sewing it but rather using it to tie together the pages... let me see if I can find a video to put a link in for what I mean... hold on... Well I couldnt find a video ugh... so basically Im sure you have seen the midori's right? They use elastic... well the way im talking about, you would just tie the signature in with a piece of seam binding or string. This way you can remove it if you want, you save tape and can use the tape to adhere flaps or pockets or photos, etc. And tying it will stay secure too. Its just an idea. You can take a small spool of twine, hemp cord, or seam binding easily and it only requires a quick bow... taping it would take more time and what if youre on a bus, subway or in a cab and you want to add something into your journal on the go? Taping would be impossible in a moving car... but with the tied binding, you just have to slip the folded piece of ephemera you want to add, right into an already existing signature thats tied in... you wouldnt even have to untie it... just slip it under the center string of the signature and youre done! If this doesnt make sense and your interested, Ill find a way to make sure you understand lol even if I have to make a video lol Anyway... another thing I want to mention is... have you ever heard of Simon and Martina? They are a couple from Canada who moved to Koreato work as teachers... they started a youtube channel called "Eat your Kimchi" and then became pretty famous and when their teaching contract was up they stayed in korea.... anyway, they recently moved to Japan and are living there now... and they changed their channel to "Eat Your Sushi"... they have lots of fun videos about life in Japan... you may want to give it a look before your trip... it might be helpful in finding places to eat because they go often to a lot of restaurants that are just hole in the walls but have the best food. Anyway... I hope you have a great trip... Im so happy for you that you get to take such an amazing adventure!! I hope I get to see your photos when you return!
@floridagoods
@floridagoods 8 жыл бұрын
+Pink Poodle Crafts Funny you mentioned Simon and Martina, I have been following them for a few years now before my trip to Korea, I am so happy they moved to Japan, I am catching up on videos that I missed since I found out they moved there. Their videos are so cool, they have the funnest time with the simplest things. I didn't know that you could get a souvenir passport at the train stations until Martina found it, so I plan on getting one and stamping at every station. I happen to know about cocos curry they talk about, my daughter was stationed in the Navy base south of Tokyo and got fat off eating Cocos curry. I ate there last time I visited and will eat there again. I am going to Character Street in Tokyo station, all hello kitty and Kawaii stuff :) I am going to Harajuku, Daiso and lots of cute stuff are there as well. I was thinking of making 3 smash books, one for each city, Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo. Depends on how much Euphemera I can get. I am taking lots of washi tape and gel pens, scissors, mini stapler, a little bit of twine, OH and a mini printer!! Also a couple sets of small stamps and few die cuts and decorative stickers, but I know I can buy anything I need for a smash book. I am also taking some 2 way glue and gold foil to add accents, some velcro dots to make envelopes. I was planning on getting some sort of large book once I'm there to smash everything into. Tell me the kind of things you like from Daiso and Sanrio and I'll see what I can do. My trip isnt till July. Thanks so much for replying

Thats so awesome that you watch them too! I had a feeling! They just got their spudgy and meemers back from Korea... that episode made me cry! Im not sure id like the food too much over there but id give it a try :) You are going to have so much fun!! I honestly done know what I would want from daiso since ive never been there but i guess if they have washi tape or kawaii stationary stuff. Thank you for thinking of me...but please dont take away room in your suitcase for me. Id be happy with some flattened newspaper lol :) Im excited for july just so I can wait patiently for your photos! lol

So so very pretty!!! (and that needle worked great!!) Do you have a video on coffee staining or tea staining?? I would love to see that!! being a coffee drinker, it would be a great way to use my left over coffee!! Always, Leslie

+Scrapn Life Away I do have a video explaining the process but it would be hard for me to film it in my kitchen because I dont have a good place to really set up my camera to see the process I use. But check out the video I did do on coffee and tea dying papers. You can search the channel if you go to my main page and where it says - Home Videos Playlists Discussion About - There is a little magnifying glass in that same row after about, use that to search just my channel :) And put in coffee dying and it will pull it up :)

what are the tools you used to poke the holes? and where could I find it?
@PinkPoodleCrafts
@PinkPoodleCrafts 7 жыл бұрын
I dont remember what I used but it was either an Awl (pokey tool) or my crop-a-dile hole punch. Any one of those would work but I think I may have used an awl

What do you use to poke the holes?
@PinkPoodleCrafts
@PinkPoodleCrafts 8 жыл бұрын
+Connie Williams Im not sure what its called really but it has a pointy end on it and really you can use anything that has a pointy end... the other thing I use to widen the hole is actually a tool meant to widen the holes on glass beads, its called a bead reamer. There are probably cheaper things you can find to do the job like an awl which can be purchased in any hardware store :)

@PinkPoodleCrafts
@PinkPoodleCrafts 8 жыл бұрын
+Gloria Concepcion I have a video on that... just do a search for "coffee dyed paper" in my channel search or just on youtube and loads of videos will pop up. You're probably better off watching some videos than have me try and type out how to do it here... Im not good at explaining things in text and Im bound to leave something out lol

OMG I wanted to tell you so bad, pleeeeze reverse the sigganatoures, please put the one with the monogram like thing on the front so it's the first thing you see and make the music the second signature. Pleeeeeeeze! But of course I couldn't talk to you and it's all in the past anyway... Of course I know that it will be okay in the end but it's going to drive me crazy in the meantime; I want to go to the end and see it perfect but that's no fun! You are my favourite person on KZbin BTW so this is truly a dark night of the soul! (mine). Nobody else says Holy Guacamole... Nobody... Boo boo hoo!
