Tutorial: Sound Design for 3D Artists

Sound engineer here! If you want a tip for working on more complex renders/bigger projects where a lot is happening in your animation, the way I learned in school (we were using ProTools mind you) is that you sort of make a “map” of what sounds you want to place where with empty sound clips. For example: your first pass may be looking for places to place footstep sfx. You scrub frame by frame and see where it’d be appropriate for steps, creaky floorboards, shifting gravel, etc. Your next pass may be for clothing movement, or room tones, etc. Each time you just put a blank SFX clip with the exact duration of time that sound would take up. That way when you bring your sounds in, it’s just a matter of dragging and dropping things into place. Then you can do your editing pass(reverb and effects), then your mixing pass(balancing volume between SFX, ADR, music, etc.) It cuts down time you’d spend trying to find the perfect duration of a sound clip that you may or may not even end up using/swapping for another and makes for really sharp editing.

I actually had a quick question as far as sound design goes. When doing all the audio levelling for a video, is there a rule of thumb as far as good volume goes? Like when you're doing your levels, should you check them when your PC/speakers are at max volume? Or should I check those sounds after setting my speaker volume to a smaller volume level? I never know how to go about it when I get to that point.

Haha yes! Sometimes it actually helps a little bit, but this time it didn't :( Would recommend using Cycles X instead!

@@Polyfjord It definitely works using Cycles-X if you have multiple GPUs, and right now this is the only way to do it (because they do not currently support multiple devices). You do have to configure each Blender to exclusively use a different GPU, for it to work. Edit: note that it is not flawless, I have had a couple of blue screen shutdowns. Save your work!

@@Polyfjord It depends on the scene, but yes, it is significantly faster on my RTX 2080 Ti using OptiX. I got approximately 35% faster renders on a scene of mine. Also forgot to say, you should also configure your animation to turn off Overwrite so that if you need to resume after a crash or something, it does not go back and re-render already completed frames.

15:46 - You can set one Blender app to render using GPU, and the other to render with CPU, then you should get MOAR frames. Although, the newer versions of Blender can utilize both the GPU and CPU at the same time if set to "GPU compute," as long as you enable it under Preferences -> System -> Cycles Render Devices (at the top of the window).

Cool sound design video! also some tips on rendering: 1) you can increase the GPU load and render speed by finding the optimal tile size for your seen. There is also an auto tile size addon. 2) you can get a bit of a render speed boost by rendering through the console as Blender doesn't have to load the GUI as its rendering. Look up the "Command Line Rendering" page on the blender docs
