People of all ages in Britain ballroom dance, from 10 to 90 (including hip replacements). Noone has a problem with it;its accepted. Ballet should be Exactly the same. EXACTLY the same!!

Yes, I dance ballroom here in the US, and that's one of the things I love about it. Being an adult beginner is absolutely normal, and working to improve for your entire life is absolutely normal. And all kinds of ages dancing together at social dances. I'm pushing 50, and I look up to some of the excellent current dancers who are a generation older than me -- that's who I want to be when I grow up.

What your adult student said about piano/ballet is so spot on. I used to take ballet class and pointe 3 times a week, learn repertoire, perform in shows, the whole 9 yards, and it didn't matter whether I was in an "adult" class or "student" class. Now that I live in an area that's more saturated with ballet schools (ironically), the young students are in "academy" programs and adults are relegated to recreational open classes that aren't even offered enough times per week to match my former schedule. And forget about pointe! Hoping to inspire change as I make connections with instructors and other advanced adult dancers, but it's a slow process and often feels lonely.

Do you even know how inspiring you are? I'm not a professional ballet dancer, I sing opera. But unfortunately things are currently not much better in our field. The way you talk about ballet(which is also my passion as I love to do it just to move myself and express myself through dance, but not as a professional) has made me thinking of ways to apply that to my profession that totally needs it. It is so important not to lose the joy of why we all started in the world of arts, whatever that art might be. Dear Katie! I’m 43 and am coming back to ballet as a form of exercise. I took ballet and pointe a long, long time ago back in ‘92 and ‘93. I was taking jazz back then also. I loved Dance so much, that I wanted to major in Dance in college and then dance professionally on Broadway. I stopped dancing because I let the freshman cheerleading coach talk me into joining the cheerleading squad and quit Dance. (I couldn’t do both). Life happened, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, and never got back into dancing. Fast forward a million years, I’m now very overweight, and have sleep apnea and my doctor has told me to diet and exercise. After a long while, I found your workouts and barres on KZbin and feel like I’m reclaiming a bit of my youth by dancing as a form of exercise. I feel like I will be able to sustain it because it’s something that I love to do. Thank you for your KZbin channel. You inspire and challenge me. Thank you for your advice and life experience, you are very relatable and make me and all of us feel like we all are friends. I love, love, love everything that you do. The last bit rang soooooo true to me. This was my biggest beef with ballet after I stopped training to have a career - there just weren't any good training options for people who wanted to improve as much as they possibly could but who were on an adult's schedule. You either join the teenagers who train from 2-8pm every day (impossible when you've got a job) or you make do with a few open classes that happen at night, that don't follow a syllabus and where the teachers don't really care whether you show up or not. This whole "up or out" approach is such a shame. I once saw an adult class from somewhere in Russia and they were going at it like pre-professional teens, with a methodical approach and all. I wish this was the norm everywhere because I don't enjoy messing around that much, I want to WORK!

Opportunities for adult dancers are often so lacking, it’s a real shame. It’s across most genres too, I’ve found. I tried Irish dance for a while in my mid-teens, and the attitude was that competing was the only valid choice, and I was very much wasting my time if I didn’t. It’s such a waste, because adults can be so much more invested in their progress, and that makes for a more fun learning experience across the board.

Kathryn....I NEEDED THIS WORD TODAY!!!!! You brought it. I had decided to stop dancing because I felt too clumsy and big (I’m not big). I felt like I just can’t balance and get coordinated. My feet don’t point in a pretty shape. So I said no more. I was trying to be perfect after years of not dancing, being a wife, mom, and teacher. I listened to you today and your video about why you love ballet. It opened my eyes. I have to do it because I LOVE IT!!! DO IT FOR ME!!! Not to be perfect, not for anyone else. I loved having professional dancers perform the Nutcracker with us when I was a teen. The principal ballerina was even backstage helping tie pointe shoe ribbons during quick changes. So glad you have the ability to be that gracious inspiring presence for young students.

Katie: I'm 40 years old & I've NEVER been told by my parents (or by anyone else in my family, for that matter) that I'm beautiful. EVER. I've been told that I look nice or that I look cute or whatever. I've NEVER EVER been told by my parents that I'm beautiful. My parents just aren't there for me emotionally. My Mother, especially. She puts me down far more than she raises me up. I'm basically my family's whipping post. Subscriber who just found this video tonight (fell asleep with KZbin on phone lol) but as an adult ballet student who has recently gone back to class after 20+ years and now doing vaganova after only knowing American ballet technique, it’s been intimidating!! Second guessed whether I even should be doing this again though I really wanted to do it so much and I was surprised to discover there are many levels of “adult ballet” in my class. I have teenagers and women in their 70s who get through the class with barely any sweat! The nicest thing is those older adults (I’m 36) compliment and encourage me while I’m cringing and embarrassed by my biggest glitch of not getting combinations quickly. Anyway, love your channel and your message about inclusiveness and body acceptance in the ballet world (relatable to me as a former competitive figure skater). Love your content so much as you’re a voice for so many of us!

I haven't taught a ballet class in a while, but I would love to borrow that "make it up" one!!!! Absolutely brilliant - I loved even the smallest moments of freedom like that (pick your ending pose, exit your own way, etc) that I was given in my training years. I can't even imagine how much good this does for young dancers' souls and spirits in such a tough career.

On your topic of taking other dance styles, I wish I'd started my "extra" training sooner than I did. I started taking jazz and modern to prepare for college dance auditions but I didn't start until the summer before. To be fair, I didn't decide until that summer that I would be going to college..... I enjoyed jazz, but I really fell in love with modern/contemporary. It gave me such a freedom that ballet didn't and it used my natural abilities so well. I took to modern so quickly that in one of my college auditions, I placed just as high in modern courses as I did my ballet courses.... I'd been dancing ballet for a decade and modern for about 6 months. I understand why ballet schools are often a little... wary of other dance style training, but these days it's such a huge asset.

Backstage memories are my favorite from my years. Me getting so enraptured by the Sugar Plum that I forgot to take my socks off (over my shoes to keep backstage wax and other nasties from reaching the stage) and I went onstage with one sock on, slipped and almost took out the Arabian dancers. Whisper-coaching other dancers, especially the youngest dancers. The domino-chain pile up of Angels when the lead Angel tripped on her hoop. Bringing water bottles to each other in the wings. The entire company dying of laughter when some poor kid in the choir for Snow had a voice crack that sounded like a dying whale. Getting off stage and climbing onto the prop bed and ignoring all instructions to get off because #tiredaf...... I could go on and on.

I feel EXACTLY the same way as your adult student. Thankfully, both in my former training school and in the new school I sometimes dance with, I've been very well-supported, if not always given the level of corrections I feel I need. But the lack of adult intensives, adult competitions, and inclusion of adults in performances (beyond party parents in Nutcracker - though that's the most fun I've had in years) gives the impression that we don't matter. We absolutely do.

In your next q & a or professional advice/tips video, can you PLEASE discuss your recommendations for studios where there aren't any male dancers, male teachers, or pas de deux offered? For example, is it better to complete one's ballet training at a small studio and then seek out a pre-professional program that offers partnering opportunities? Would not having pas de deux experience hurt a student auditioning for a pre-professional program or second company? The only pas de deux experience I have received was an hourly class offered for six days at a summer intensive (not at the studio where I am/have been training year round)?

I appreciate about your point on seeing social media as a visual resume. Well said. I remember dance magazine and pointe magazine well growing up in the 80s, and only the glossy side of dance was known. It’s not until I read Dancing on my grave by Gelsey Kirkland in paperback in high school. I was in high school in late 80s and early 90s that I had received an eye opening experience . Later on in college I would go to bookstores in the performing arts section and read several books on a similar topic to become more educated in 🩰 outside of the classroom. I had to go to my bookshelf to find this paperback. Lastly, yes the joy of dance needs to make a come back.

Especially for pointing out how important social media is for young dancers. „It’s like a real- time resumé“- you are so so right!! Bear in mind that many „influential“ people in ballet, like directors, teachers, impresarios, sponsors etc. are old (50 plus) and conservative. Many of them are hyper-critical about social media. They haven’t grown up with internet. If they get the impression that you are not serious and mainly focused on „fun“ videos to attract the „Tik-Tok“ follower generation, they are out. But these people might be the ones that have the money and influence to make you famous.

Thank you Katie! That was so inspiring! I started ballet when I was in kindergarten in China but had to give up due to lots of school work. Because of my parents generation who had a fixed mind about being a professional dancer in which it's going to be too tiring and it's just not worth the time and because of my ballet learning experience, which was pretty painful and unhealthy, I became intimidated about ballet. It wasn't until this pandemic that I started to pick up ballet. I watched a Chinese dance TV show called Dance Smash Season 2 and it just blew my mind. Although I couldn't do splits (I'm working on it right now), but I love ballet so much that I couldn't care less about the pain but focus more on the joy that it brought to me as I see myself improving day by day. (FYI: I signed up for your Friday class! See you this Friday! Excited to have you as my teacher for my first time!)

Something I have been struggling with this school year is wearing a mask during class and not being able to breathe normally. It's also unfair because my brother who plays basketball doesn't have to wear a mask during practice or games. And basketball is a pretty interactive sport.

Loved this Q&A! And I'm always so happy to hear you're doing as well as you are, Kathryn! You are always a delight to watch, even for non-dancers like me! I thought of a question when you mentioned trainees/apprentices being super dependable and being able to jump in at any time. I know there's probably no single answer (doubtless, it depends on the company), but if someone is a particularly reliable trainee or apprentice, would it ever be possible for them to fill in for a principal or soloist, or do they tend to solely fill in for the corps de ballet? Again, I know it varies, but has anyone heard of or had experience with this? I'm a writer, and I'm trying to get my facts as realistic as possible. Goodness knows, we have enough false narratives/myths around the ballet world. *Hem* Black Swan *hem* Tiny Pretty Things! *hem*

Great question! As a young dancer, they typically fill the corps spots. Now obviously if they are hired as an official company member, they have the ability to work their way up and be promoted. And then they might get a chance to do a role. But in terms of who the trainees and students typically fill in for, it's the corps. There are always exceptions to the rule though!

I’d love any resources for pregnant adult dancers. I got en pointe 6 months before covid, danced at home for a year during covid while still en pointe, and then found out I was pregnant. I’m getting a lot of mixed messages as to what I can or can’t do and am struggling with my budding identity as a mother and my blossoming identity as a dancer.
