TV Calibration - The Highest Contrast Possible Using a Phone App? (PART 5)

I look into using a Phone app to work out the highest white point on a TV or Display. Is it possible to find out the best possible contrast setting for your TV by just using a 100% white test pattern? I take a look into this.

Oddly enough, depending on the ABL, some TVs like the LG C1 OLED have lower brightness full screen depending in the gray scale. For example, from those 0-255 full screen pictures I shared the 255 might be dimmer than lower pictures due to TVs brightness restrictions. What you can do on SDR is to lower the OLED Light and Contrast to balance out that consistency so you can actually get a brighter full screen picture with increased gray scale pictures. So ideally, you want to see the brightness going up from 0 to 255 until you hit the ABL wall and then stay the same and not go down. I haven't done a video about it yet

Thanks, I'm going to look into this and see if my monitors suffer from this. Because in certain situations it could be brighter than I measured.

For Full screen white the Limit is set by ABL on the OLEDs and increasing the Light output or contrast won't bypass it, if anything it will make the ABL more noticeable. The key is to play around with the Contract and Color saturation to understand the relationship between them on each TV. Just use a color clipping test pattern and it goes like this, if you see colors clipping on a given TV by increasing the Contrast just lower the color saturation. On my Pioneer Kuro contrast on 40 is tge max with the default saturation but if I lowered the colors to -12 I can max out the Contrast to 60 and getmore full screen brightness and because this Plasma is so saturated with the colors it doesn't make tge picture quality suffer with dull colors l. For other TVs you might be better of by lowering the contrast and increasing the color saturation

When increasing the contrast check that the colors are not clipping with the color saturation settings using a color clipping pattern on youtube rec709 color clipping pattern

I'm using a different app (iPhone) but I found one that does the same thing (mostly) but it only does Lux. However, I tried this method and I feel like I'm not getting accurate results. I'll lower the contrast until I get a dip in Lux, but when I try to pinpoint it I need to go up quite a bit more than I went down to get the number to go back up.

Yeah, I think there's a fine balance to this. Plus, some displays really don't like calibrating past around 20% and below. But, OLEDs should be fine.
