Speaking of Heroes, I remember reading (way back when), that the show was supposed to focus on a separate group of heroes with each season. Which is why season 1 ended the way it did. Due to the popularity of the characters, the network execs and fans pushed for more stories about them instead of preparing for a new season of fully unknown characters. So it fits with your greater context of writers being sidelined and being forced to deal with outside pressures to create "content".

I was having a conversation about this the other day and came to the conclusion that the entire debate can essentially be boiled down to the question, "Do you believe there is value in the human experience?" Since AI can only regurgitate bits and pieces of what already exists, and art is a reflection & representation of our unique, multifaceted, lived experiences, if you truly believe artists should be replaced with AI, you are saying you see no fundamental value in those experiences. At which, you should probably just pack it up and call it a day.

I think we also need to ask: "If AI can replace jobs, then that also includes the positions of bosses, managers, shareholders, executives, Presidents and CEO's, among other such roles, right?" Surely if they are also workers (as some rhetoric argues in regard to viewing the bourgeoisie as also part of the working class), they are also subject to the same treatment?.... Then watch the post-hoc / retcon rhetorical obfuscations.

In any sort of Capitalist system, profit will always always take priority over the human experience because money distorts and corrupts all it touches. If we want people to be more important than pleasing shareholders/lining the pockets of the ultra wealthy, then we need increased and robust regulations, or a post-Capitalist system of economics.
@NelsonStJames

People seem to disregard the fact that lately a good deal of the “art” we’ve been getting has been so manipulated to appeal to certain demographics that it doesn’t (can’t) represent individual, multifaceted human experience, long before the threat of AI was even a consideration. Our society has devalued individual expression so much that we made AI created content very easy. Art has never been a matter of checking off elements on a chart, or following some theoretical “heroes journey”, but if that is one’s view of art, then you don’t need an actual writer, artist, or any human being to give you that.
@Xoulrath_

There is no value in human existence. We are a waste of space and a danger to this entire planet. If we put as much effort into bettering everyone's lives as we do into controlling and conquering for power and money, then maybe we could make the argument that there is value in our existence. But that simply isn't the case. The irony is in the fact that the writers are having to go on strike to demand enough pay to simply live just proves how useless we really are. We like to think of ourselves as evolved and not animals, but we're worse.

Honestly, I think people stopped believing Hollywood/television writers were rich back in the 70’s. They’ve never even been portrayed as being rich in Hollywood. Average person can’t even name the writer of an episode of a show, or a film unless that person created, or directed as well. Writers like George R.R. Martin are outliers, which is a reason writers have always been treated like step-children in the industry.

The original content it is training from is copyrighted. Secondly, the training is done in a way called Human-in-the-loop training. It requires feedback during training. Some stories of 'strike ruined my favorite show' may be overblown, but I distinctly remember when Friday Night Lights, a beautifully realized TV show, took a turn for the absolutely absurb and maudlin, and post-strike they had to scramble (and basically ignore the worst storylines) in order to restore its grounded excellence. I didn't blame the writers for striking; I blamed the studio for thinking they could do without quality writing. It was an early lesson in how crucial good writing (and writers) are to the success of a show, and that (as you stated) corporations couldn't care less about art or even entertainment. I'm surprised you think that narrative is corporate propaganda; for me, it clearly adds support to the argument of the writers.

not to “um actually” you but i JUST read an AV Club article from 2013 about it this morning: Jesse Pinkman was not saved by the shortening of the first season of Breaking Bad. he was already known to be coming back for season 2 by S01E02. Vince Gilligan has stated that killing Jesse was on the table at the beginning of Breaking Bad’s production, but by the time the writers strike rolled around they had already decided to keep him around for two reasons. the first being that Aaron Paul is great, but also primarily because they felt that keeping Jesse on as Walt’s foil for long term growth would have been more beneficial than killing Jesse off to give Walt his character change. “The writers’ strike, in a sense, didn’t save him, because I knew by episode two, we all did, all of us, our wonderful directors and our wonderful producers… everybody knew just how good [Aaron Paul is], and a pleasure to work with, and it became pretty clear early on that that would be a huge, colossal mistake to kill off Jesse.” -Gilligan

I realize that contracts are built on specificity (and that whoever finds the loophole in the language wins), but it feels like contracts now, with how rapidly technology is advancing, need a “and whatever future content platforms may arise” clause. I vaguely recall, back in the day, Disney trying to not have to pay the A.A.Milne estate for Pooh dvd sales, since the contract specified vhs.

I thought that the major mitigating factor behind the 2007 strike wasn't just internet content, but DVD sales.

Here's a much older example of tragic consequences from TV land because artists had to make sure they weren’t going to get shafted... A big reason that a lot of Doctor Who episodes are lost media is because the actors guild in England had a rule regarding re-runs. Actors owned their performances within a film, meaning that if a network wanted to run an old episode again, they needed the sign off from the actors, which would also mean paying them again for the that performance. Usually this worked out by the studio just paying the actors to reprise their roles for a reshoot because that ended up cheaper somehow, but the reason it was set up like that was to protect actors from studios taking advantage of them. Basically, if you want to run this story again, you need to make sure the actors are being taken care of. As a result, the BBC didn’t really take a huge amount of care in archiving their films, so a lot of stuff got filmed over or tossed out or just damaged over time because it wasn’t worth the money to take care of it properly. I'm not sure exactly what changed (like if the actors guild made some set of guidelines to allow studios to do what they like with the footage, or just ditched that rule... i dunno) but even though we lost a lot of classic Who, I'm glad the reason was at least because people valued the people who made the show more than pumping out some shit for a profit.

Lost and Heros both went bonkers in the later seasons - the only show I really miss from those days is Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. There was some sort of shoot-out in a swimming pool, to a Johnny Cash soundtrack, and that was it.

I think something more people who have the take "media has been bad or predictable lately" is that alot of what we dont like is edits, rewrites and studio notes from higher up people not involved in the writing the reason we should be against it is its just going make scripts more influenced by studio notes.

I hope the part about people seeking out more foreign shows and movies in the meantime turns out to be true. People use subtitles more than ever (even people who aren’t deaf or hard of hearing) and maybe people will even demand better quality from Hollywood after exposing themselves to different kinds of shows and movies. That would be a real bright spot in all this.

3:06 Same thing happened last strike. Then reality shows flooded the market. At that time I was more a key demographic being years ago. But I really didn't watch that junk and disliked the culture born from it. And then well written projects came and became outstanding. With that, there has been a backlog of amazing content that can be revisited. Now with the A.I. discussion. I fully believe companies will take up cheap projects but it won't be the end to creatives. Support artists and creatives. Pay them well. These companies that are interested in saving money will not have projects that will sustain their company if they go A.I.

Great to hear your thoughts on this. I just discovered David Foster Wallace this week and while listening to his essay on television and culture started down a similar path. I hadn't thought about the writer's strike giving us Trump, BUT I do think the writer's strike and subsequent move to so much "reality television" played a huge role in everything the Republicans have become. When I grew up in America, there was a clear line dividing the kind of people you would see on television and those you would NEVER see on television. I think that helped maintain a cultural moral compass in the US. No matter where you grew up (me, in the south) you KNEW what bettering yourself looked like. That motivated my generation to get educations, learn to speak well, dress well, and think issues through before shooting off your mouth. Once Jerry Springer and all that followed launched on television in the US, that compass was smashed. So, what will THIS writer's strike bring? How bad can it get?

How young do you think I am? I'm Gen Z and I'm a screenwriter, and we had reruns on TV. We still have reruns on TV, it's just superceded by streaming. I'm glad you're talking about our strike, but it's disappointing that you would punch down at Gen Z for a cheap gag. You do realize I'm 25 years old, right? I was born in 1997. My favorite kids' show was Mister Rogers Neighborhood, and that was exclusively experienced through reruns.

Of the people I follow that have commented on AI I am both glad you are and sad that you are the only one to get it right! So much bad info from the others and you’ve got its limitations but also the problem with bad actors right on- capital takes the lower quality product that it can do (not end the world via robot overlords) to take from the good work that actually paying people can achieve. The other, apocalyptic narrative distracts from what is actually happening.
