What I've found over the 6 years since I stopped paying for a licence/using live TV entirely is that the letters and their tone form a triangle over the course of a year. This triangle starts a low point on the left with a reminder letter, it travels upward with increasing grumble and threat until it reaches its peak, which entails an actual date for a visit. The drop-off as the triangle heads back down to its right angle is the wait for this visit which, in my experience, never happens at all! They have even visited other households in the years its been, but never mine. If they ever do attend, I shall just be inviting them to take in the surrounds of the great outdoors, while I go and do something more meaningful with my life.

I would say a good twenty people I've spoken to have cancelled and all of them thought you needed a licence if you have a TV. They have also told others so very quickly this can turn into hundreds of people cancelling just by one person spreading the word.

Monopolies are supposed to be illegal yet watch any live tv on any device in the UK the BBC demand you buy a TVL. Imagine if Tesco sent you a shopping enforcement officer round to your door to demand payment for shopping at every other supermarket except Tesco. That would definitely be an abuse of power. At our present house the BACK of the TV is in full view from the street, so they could clearly see we have a TV! But as long as they can't see what you're watching from outside theres nothing they can do about it! Don't let them intimidate you into paying any longer! Hundreds of thousands of people cancel their TV licence every year! No court in the land is going to issue warrants for that amount of people!! Cheers.

Cancelled my licence today. I only ever watch streaming services and don't even have the facility to receive live broadcasts any more. To be fair, I did call them and it was easy to cancel over the phone. The woman on the other end didn't give me any hassle. She did it there and then and sorted out my rebate.

Was visited two weeks ago, the wife answered the door and said I'll get my husband, I went to the door camera running and pointed out that I was recording. Everything was very cordial, he correctly pointed out under what circumstances I would need a licence and I pointed out that when my licence expired at the end of April I disconnected all the tv's from the aerial. Also pointed out that for half the licence fee I now get prime and have never had such a choice of content, I'm watching stuff I didn't even know existed, also pointed out that my eldest son has Disney+ so I have access to that. Rubbed it in that for £80 i have a constant stream of new (to me) programmes as opposed to £160 for a constant round of repeats. I can't understand why anybody bothers with live tv anymore. Made me laugh when he said he won't come in to check my tv's because of covid, I pointed out that I wouldn't have let him in anyway as I won't have anyone in from a company that sends me threatening letters.

Ignore letters! If any representative of this organisation knocks the door, close it without saying a word! No communication .. no contract! I have found this strategy to be very useful over the years, and not just for these leeches! They will go away eventually. Don't argue or discuss anything with them ... Simply become non cost effective!

@@claireprescott8936 I don't see how Capita, (the licence 'enforcers') could make a case for altering an individual's credit rating. They are a private company and as such they have no legal authority to do most of what they claim to be able to do. Put it another way, their stock in trade is harassment and bluff! By cancelling your licence you are doing nothing wrong and they know it.

Got another letter today, saying I didn't respond within 10 days they gave me. They've scheduled a visit by an Officer from Maidstone Enforcement Division. They also say they'll apply to court for a search warrant, and I'll be interviewed under caution in accordance with national criminal law. Can't wait... P.S. The letter is dated December 2020? The 10 days they gave me was for February 2021. How weird...

I have today just received a letter saying that I am being given official notice that my property is now under investigation. They said my address has been passed to the Oxford Enforcement Division and full details of what to expect during their visit will be sent to me shortly!

an old ex company bailliff i knew ,used to hand out letters to these salesman asking them to read and sign the basic contract ,if they entered his home and found no tv connected to a wire coaxal cable or wifi to any tv channels then,they had agreed to his terms he would take the person to court as harrssement and other stuff he had a price list and costs,he took 2 to small claims court and won this was 2007,they stopped going to his house after that,wonder why?

They do pretty much exactly the same if you tell them you do not need a license. When I moved into my flat about 5.5 years ago I told the BBC I did not need a license, they responded that I would not hear back from them for 2 years, 6 months later I got a letter ordering me to ether pay, tell them I no longer need a license or they would start an investigation. After about 3 years and about 10 letters, I decided not to tell them again and see what happens. The 2 years without contacting them elapsed probably about a year and a half ago, I probably do receive more letters from the BBC now they are addressed to "the occupier" rather than me by name, otherwise little has changed.

We have non-commercial TV and radio too, which we voluntarily support through donations. Not even the Canadian CBC requires a TV licence or the Australian ABC. The mother country should take a hint!

I have been visited but rarely and I simply hang up the intercom when they do show up. The nerve. They treat us like we are breaking laws. Can't stand them and refuse to pay them a penny for a service I don't need.

Trying to start paying again can be interesting too as they back-date the start of the license to where you last had one. A few years ago I tried to get them to accept a few months gap because we'd been away for an extended period and they point blank refused. I got as far as claiming they'd broken our contract of sale as I'd paid them for a license starting in June but they'd supplied me with one starting in March. Their response was "a licence is a legal permission, the fee isn't a payment for a service and therefore no contract is formed". After this I just switched to not pay at all. Not because I don't think it's value for money but really because I totally disagree with the enforcement approach. I do wonder if I ever decide to start watching live TV again, what the start date of the new license would be...

So if I can delete the BBC channels when retuning does that mean as I can’t receive BBC then I don’t have to pay the licence tax. I am over 75 and disgusted that the BBC CEO assumes elderly pensioners can afford to pay exorbitant fees to watch a lot of repeat programmes. I stopped paying 5 years ago but had to phone up to cancel. That way I got a small refund. They should have left me alone for 2 years. Within 6 months they started harassing me with post. The first one had me slightly concerned, but I've been ignoring them for over 4 years and never been happier.

With me they did not do that, upon cancelling my dd, Tv licence kept up my tv licence but sold the debt to a third party Marstons to chase me for the debt, even to thou dd was cancelled. After a bit of a argument, TVL back down and cancelled the debt sent me a cheque for £30 for compo for not cancelling the account.

Seems to make no difference if you tell the clowns or not. I've been licence free for over ten years now, and genuinely don't need one. I wrote to them a few years ago and told them i no longer need one, as i got sick of the harassing letters. I had a reply saying we've updated our records and won't bother you for two years bla bla bla, then less than a month later the threatening letters started again and never stopped!

I cancelled my licence back in March this year. So far, I've had 2 letters and 1 visit, all of which I've ignored. I haven't turned the TV on for over 2 years so there'sno way I'mpaying for something I don't use. This morning I got a bright red envelope with a bright red letter inside threatening all sorts of horrible things if I don't pay up. I thought the iridescent red colouring was a nice touch though. I may frame it and hang it on the wall as a contrast colour to the white paintwork or, maybe, tape it to the TV screen and turn it into a feature 🤣🤣

I told them - all good, but after a year I started getting letters, I've just ignored them. I'm waiting for the goons to arrive, I've been told just to shut the door on them - don't engage in any conversation with them, they have no power.

Just don't answer the door,,and if you accidentally do,,never give your name and simply say goodbye and shut the door,and when you buy a brand new one from a shop,never give your real details!!,,,this method has been working for me and my wife since about 1987! 😆 happy New year all ❤

Nothing if you abide by the rules. Don't watch any live TV or iplayer. I cancelled mine just before it expired. I have no tv Sky or any tv. THis is a great channel to inform people who are bullied by letters or doorstep johnies.

Ignore the letters, if someone knocks on the door and asks who you are, ask them who they are......when they reply simply reply that you are not interested, thank them and close the door. Do not identify yourself and be polite. Never paid ever.

Chilli, Question: Do you know who owns the 'Yesterday' and 'Drama' channels, please? I'm 79 and enjoyed a free TV licence for four years before the BBC tried to get me to buy another licence. However, I don't want a licence because quality of the programmes provided by the BBC and ITV and others is crap. I try to avoid programmes provided on the ''regular'' channels but, there are loads of other channels and I've no idea who owns them! I genuinely do not want to watch ''live'' programmes - though that term is quite vague, isn't it? .- and usually only watch one or two channels as my TV viewing time is only about two to three hours a night. Any info you can provide, would be appreciated. Thank you for what you do. I enjoy your informative videos.

Yesterday, Dave and Drama channels are all available via the UKPlay streaming app which you can install to a smart tv. You don't need a tv licence to watch them either.

@@rosemary5531 It’s owned by BBC Studios, part of the commercial arm of the BBC. Nice little earner, licence fee payers paid for many of these programmes to be created, they then get to sell advertising around them. OFCOM should investigate it, but they won’t.

I have had every kind of threatening letter from them in the last 3 years.Investigation after investigation they have threatened me with and to date not one of them has been at my door.I have 2 TV's,2 smart phones and a laptop all perfectly capable of screening the crap that the BBC shows.I don't worry about the TV goons because I only watch Netflix.I think I should start sending their letters back to them with "Not at this address".
