I started to play this on-line game once it went to free to play many years ago, about 6 months after that I became a life time member. I have seen many changes to this game some good and many not so good, one of them that I have always missed was the ability of players able to make there own sub story arc with-in the game for other player to do that gave a lot more content from the two or three main story arc the game had at the time. Some were big and small but many of them were very good that did come with some added loot given at the end. But once they took that out of the game, it up set many good players who spent hours some time hundreds of hours making them to help add to the game. Stu I am not sure you if you know of this, but I am sure there mite be an old KZbin video or two still out there about this.

I really just want Deca to start doing what was shown cryptic could do, but they just stopped bothering with. They showed they can revamp starting experiences with the multiple times they did it for Fed's, including the copy paste for discovery, and they redid the Klingon start plus put out a recruitment. Deca needs to redo the art for the Rom start because it's over 9 years old at this point, and do a recruitment for it when it's all done just like we saw with the Klingon one. Things like that where it was "just so hard you don't understand!" for cryptic, until it magically wasn't and they got it out the door quickly. Even without art, there are a lot of revamps to things like traits, adding in EW's for ships that were released before that and never got one just reusing older art assets, putting out new items that help lacking playstyles or just revamping existing ships with new mechanics to help like science carriers, and stuff like that. There is a lot Deca could do, and needs to do, if they're serious about actually keeping the game going. If they're just going to keep doing what Cryptic did, which is honestly below the bare minimum at times, it's just going to be a disappointment.

Maybe a controversial opinion but I wouldn't mind paying for expansions if it meant they'd spend less time releasing new ships I'm never gonna use (z-store is oversaturated imo) and instead used their resources to make an expansion that was up to the quality of Delta Rising or Legacy of Romulus. Since those were the only expansions that actually felt like expansions.
@Fosgate7778 ай бұрын
Your not alone, I’d much rather have actual “expansions” like Delta rising or Legacy of Romulus then them just cranking out Ships. I feel they need to alter their formula, make an actual expansion for a new areas where all players come together in social zones AND sprinkle in new Ships, Consoles, Traits, and items. I really feel this mixture would elevate STO to really create a buzz and fresh excitement, bringing more players back into the game which generates revenue. I’m kinda tired of the STO Starship Dealer Lot of Ships as cool as they all are! Need content to use them in!

Also remember when they shut down the Foundry, Mike mentioned that Cryptic moved workers from STO to the Magic game they are developing, so if Deca is hiring new developers, wonder if they are going to do something, like fixing and bringing back the Foundry or creating something new from the ground up.

Been playing since the beginning. I, unfortunately, can't say I'm sad to see the old dev team go (with a few small exceptions). The game badly needs new blood. I see a lot of people worried about microtransactions being more prevalent under DECA, but the game is already a microtransaction hell. Look at what you need to have to upgrade a single ship to full functionality, let alone your gear and crew. As for content, we get what, maybe 2-3 new episodes a year if we're lucky? Maybe a new STF? Meanwhile they keep pumping out those lockboxes and $30+ ships/bundles. The game is already basically dead, it's a husk on life support. Phasing out the dev team will either finish the job, or bring it back, for better or worse.

Also in recent times, no one seemed to bother about fixing bugs. 100% agree that this could end up being a positive change. Fact is with an old game there's going to be a lot of entrenched ideas, and not much willingness to shake up the status quo. Besides obvious improvements like better communication and being more on top of performance issues/bugs, I'd also really love to see them take a hard look at the 'endgame.' I think just seeing how the new advanced consoles brought some life to the elite queues, they could look at other ways to give players more reasons to use all those fancy ships and gadgets they sell us.

You said exactly how I feel about gambling lockboxes. I think also a lot of us shy away from opening them because of the horror stories, and poor and expensive odds of not getting the ship. I would also love to see them put in a reasonable ceiling, or cap of a worst case scenario like you mentioned, that would at least be better than some horror stories of not getting a ship after $300 which will just piss off your customer and maybe even quit playing or create for an extremely negative experience which will have facts for them not put in money into the game any longer Because of these gambling antics. I would love to see this change, and I believe just like how they split up the anniversary bundles to allow us to buy individual ships instead of forcing you to buy the whole thing all or nothing I would love to know if they made more sales this way. So my point is along with yours, could they bring in more money from more players, who would now consider opening up block boxes to get a ship who would never have done that before which also gives more players access to gambling lock box ships who absolutely don’t open boxes now. There has to be a fair middle ground or even a better model for this.

Governments have been looking at tightening laws regarding gambling in games for years and if it does happen, this would impact Lock Boxes... its a positive for us, but game companies could see this and decide to release a ship in a box for x-amount of money, probably similarly priced to buying a ton of keys. I hate Lock Box gambling, but it's really the only means of getting a Lock Box ship unless have billions of EC.

EC is worthless right now because there's too much of it floating around. It needs to come down. There needs to be a listing fee on the exchange to get rid of a lot of those items that just keep getting re-listed over and over forever by people who use alts to buy out anyone who undercuts them.

Great video, I started the game first with the demo in 2010. STO has come a long way since 2010. A C-Store change I think would be good for value is with the expansion Pack & Starter Packs. For example, if you bought the Starter Pack it would give a discount on the full expansion pack. By subtracting the cost of the base price of the starter pack from the expansion pack. Edit: Thank you to Cryptic for the content over the years & making a unique Star Trek game. Where we can captain our own starship & have adventures. The draw for me as a Star Trek fan for playing the game was captaining a Galaxy Class Starship and being a Klingon captain looked really fun. Choosing to have the game be F2P from P2P was a good idea, which makes STO unique for the amount of content it has.

I do hope that new blood will add some...freshness to the game because I've been playing it for years and it's already started skipping free ship events. I have space barbie needs and I don't care to fly the best ships with the best perks, but the c-store ships are all just "standard" Federation/Klingon/Romulan style ships with a few odd ones out.

Haven't played STO in a while. Had no idea this shakeup was happening. Will be interesting to see what does and does not change. I'm a little worried about DECA being a mostly mobile game company. Mobile games are notorious for not caring about anyone but whales. As to the drop rates you are talking about ~7:30. I thought it was law that percentage chances HAD to be disclosed? After EA screwed up so hard with the Battlefront 2 reboot and governments started cracking down on loot boxes, I thought laws were passed. I could be mistaken.

I play 2 mobile games via BlueStacks (playing one atm), and yes they *do* list the % for each gacha prize by name, not just by vague rarity. I'm hoping for a reduction of the stakes in the storyline. Some Beta Quadrant history (Romulan Exodus from Vulcan, Catian/Ferasan Wars, etc.) could produce interesting storylines... yet another universal threat will not. From a mechanics perspective I'm hoping for less focus on cannon armed ships and forward firing arcs. Some love for broadside ships would be a nice change of pace. On ground, just one thing would help massively... auto-retargeting with melee weapons. Not having that is ridiculous at this point. Also, more exploration based missions. This is Star Trek after all. Where are the random anomalies and single planet evil computer overlords!? Unfortunately, I don't expect any of these things.

I'm hoping that a new dev team will mean new expansions to the game in terms of features and mechanics. I don't call the game as it is now "Star Trek Online." I call it "Starships Online." because that's more or less all it's really about.. We get all these new ships that we can fly while doing the same old content over and over, when what we should be getting is new content to fly ships in. And in all this time, there is one part of the Star Trek mythos that has no practical purpose in the game: our ship interiors. It's a setting in the shows that exists in every single episode of every season from start to finish of every series. And yet there has never been a gameplay loop that actually utilizes that setting in the game. Over the years, many ideas of how Interiors could be made to serve a purpose, have been floated by many players, only to be closed by moderators because they touch on something that was labeled as a frequently created topic. Now, the forums have slowed down to a crawl because no meaningful discussion can be had there, because so many things people want to see have been FCTed and therefore are not allowed to be discussed. Nevermind the fact that in several cases, the devs themselves went and did something that rendered a previous decision moot, thus technically making certain ideas valid again, but because those things had been previously FCTed, the mods cite the old irrelevant answers and close the discussion. The FCT restriction needs to go away if a new dev team is taking control. What might not have been doable before, may be very much in the cards now. Or maybe the new team really wants to know what players want to see without any previous bias being applied.

We have all these awesome ships and very few, 1 dimensional, unchallenging maps to use them in. Now it's just a race to see how quickly you can complete each run, we know how, when and where each mob comes in and we just swat them like flies and warp out. This is why I won't spend a single penny on the game, lack of content beyond (the very nice, but play through once only) story missions.

Was actually thinking about getting back in…getting that lifetime membership, I typically sign in every couple of years and spend the Zen that builds up. But it sounds like maybe I shouldn’t waste my time…I dunno. Anyway, you can probably find one of my old KZbin videos of me solo’ing the original Borg ground FTE’s back when they were not called FTE or FTP or whatever they’re called now. I think his name was Vanek? Or whatever…I don’t even remember that borg’s name…but I was one of, if not the first one to spec my toon to solo him…and I did join teams that were struggling and would just beat it for them…back when the drops meant something and everyone was trying to get the end game ground gear. Lol this was…I dunno, 12-13-14 years ago? Lol I played right up through the PWE buyout and the Delta Rising expansion…after that, I stopped being a daily player because the micro transactions became insane and Perfect World seriously messed this game up with the grinding. Unfortunately a dev like DECA being known for mobile gaming is most likely going to keep these micro transactions, could even make it worse…like getting rid of the free Zen for lifetime membership.

As much as I bitched about Cryptic. I would love to see Star Trek Online succeed. I am a Trekkie to the bone. Cryptic on the other hand? They made their bed. They lay in it. Everyone at Cryptic Studios should lose their jobs. I won't shed a tear. STO needs a developer that actually cares about the product. Not one who milk's it for every penny. And treats some of the player base like a pile of shit. And disrespects what Star Trek is about.

I honestly haven't played since they started shoehorning Discovery garbage into the game. Put a lot of hours into building ship and character, loved the Jem'hadar expansion, and decided to finally get that lifetime subscription. Then they started to put the STD stuff in there and I just checked out.

As predatory as mobile monetization is, they do have a pity system to guarantee the grand prize for the event banner. Mobile games even list the drop rate % chances for each gacha prize. Does Cryptic still refuse to list theirs?

DilEx has been a goddamn nightmare for close to 5 years. I remember buying my first REAL ship using the DilEx, and being amazed that I had the capacity to get the store ships by utilizing my time played. I did it maybe 4 or 5 times - not a single one of those since it capped. It's just broken, inflated, there's no Dil sinks to really even it out and give new players a chance to get hype about being able to earn a ship in game that doesn't take a multi-month daily login campaign to achieve, etc... There's no reason for new players to stick around when the reward for doing so is "Wait."

In my opinion, the DECA transfer actually signals STO is going in to maintenance mode. New content will slow, or dry up and the game, to your point about monetization, will survive as long as it draws enough to make a profit. This, of course, will also be influenced by the fate of the Star Trek IP. Personally, while I don't celebrate employment losses, I've felt the Cryptic Team has been institutionally bad and welcome the fresh eyes and ideas.

I'm happy that so many people are optimistic about this, but having been a veteran of MMO's since UO/EQ1, I know exactly what to expect and not to expect from this kind of thing. So I'm glad that they're going to give it a try?... But I don't have hope it's going to pan out, or improve in the way most of the folks in this comment section seem to. I think expecting anything more than this game being left on life support with some new incentives to spend cash for the next 5 years is extremely wishful thinking. And that's more so than what Cryptic was already doing. They know there's a dedicated fanbase for this game who have stuck around even during the worst issues, bugs, and shady dev/marketing tactics. They know there's a cow to keep milking, there.

I've spent hundreds on keys and only got 3 or 4 ships. With the phoenix boxes, thousands of boxes opened, and 3 elite tokens. Buying 250 keys to get 1 ship is an accurate assessment. They should make ship tokens Lobi purchases? It's not Cryptic's fault. They were given directives by their holding company to make money for them.
@chadwickmccarty49449 ай бұрын
DECA could finesse some in-game mechanics, possibly with the gambling, but I doubt DECA will do anything too drastic. I haven't bought keys for a drought of time partially because of the dismal odds but also because lobi purchases are so restrictive & expensive so imo a bad value. I think Cryptic/STO has been suffering some tough complacency for the last few years. It is one of the main reasons I thought that Jon H. was a breath of fresh air & innovation. A major downer is the loss of USA jobs. My fingers are crossed for better.

May be a unpopular opinion but i stopped playing STO a year ago. I really felt the game lost it's way since the victory and life story arc came out. It's devolved into selling ships, lockboxes and grinding endlessly to get the ships you want up to scratch until the next set of ships come out and repeat with a few nuggets of good content added in along the way. If they go back to basics and make new content more story missions, tfo's and game modes even if they can't have actors back to voice characters id be all for that and happily pick the game up again. For right now im happy to sit and wait it out and see what happens but a fresh set of eyes and talent for this game could do it a world of good.

I’ve felt the same way for a long time now. Their new “content” is exactly as you described. I feel that’s a lazy easy cash grab way out instead of actually creating new zones and areas for us players to explore while using new items and ships in. Other games do it, and this one could be wildly exciting if they also put in this effort I feel.

This sums up exactly how I feel also! . . . That’s it ! ! . . . You’re hired for Deca as the Lead Content Creator Relations position! I can’t wait until you start ! ! 😁 Seriously though I do feel like they take advantage of us, their players also namely because gambling lock box ships not disclosing the odds with only caring about generating revenue even if a loyal veteran or unknowingly new player tries to get a ships and loses out on hundred of dollars leaving their customer with a very negative experience with no options once they don’t win said advertised ship or jam it into a overly priced Mudds Bundle. Yes granted Mudds is account unlock and guaranteed amount vs gamble lockbox single account with no guaranteed spend amount, but they both are just super expensive. There has to be a more fair and respectful sales model then what they have now to generate the same if not more revenue. I fully agree with you!

I was ok spending 50$ but i had to really narrow down what ship i wanted and what i wanted to do. which i picked great one the lex dread is a beast. But i want Kelvin timeline phaser. @QuantumNova9 ай бұрын
@@Zimionz 1,000 devs hours? They have been copy/pasting ships for the past 6 years. A ship texture update is easy. 30 hours is more accurate. *Honestly I'm tired of that excuse.* Cryptic sabotage ships for the other factions. KDF would get no Unique traits or just clones ships from the federation with worse stats. Of course it's gonna *SELL* horrible. Like when they were doing the 'jab' where fed ships have a 3 piece set, but KDF variant could only get 2 pieces. The 3rd piece can't be used on the KDF variant and we miss out on a ability/passive. Would you buy the KDF variant knowing it would be half-assed? Cryptic: "See? The KDF ships don't sell." Me: Yeah, because you always do something stupid to sabotage it.

There is an old saying "Hope in one hand and sh1t in another and see which fills up first." It is never the hope hand fyi. DECA being a mobile dev the best indicator would be to see what they develop and how good or bad those are. I fear we are in for a whole new layer of monetization and microtransactions that will nickel and dime us to death like almost all mobile games do. Prepare for huge time gates that can be bypassed with $ far worse than we see now. On the flip side is STO could go on life support with a small trickle of content and updates. As far as stripping Cryptic is so they can get rid of U.S. salaries in favor of outsourced cheap labor for development, and cheap is what we can come to expect in quality also. Sorry STU I personally don't see this as being good for STO. I have a feeling LTS are going to be axed as legacy, why else would it have been a 50% discount. I think the LTS sale was a last-ditch effort as a money grab before the changeover. I really hope I am wrong, but we will see.
