Great video! Your choice of images and music is, as usual, spot on (something the other Windsurf KZbinrs struggle with, I find). Interesting experiment, and even more interesting conclusion (your dad's injury was pretty nasty). Sometimes even pros need a little placebo... ;)

Interesting to hear your thoughts and feeling on this topic. I would believe that the feeling difference after sanding, depends on the surface finish of the foil before sanding. I think if you have a very glassy finished foil, it makes a more noticeable difference than if your foil is already kind of hydrophile

Hey Nils how about a video on how recreational sailors can increase top speeds on foil. Tips you've found useful on technique. I have similar foil/board/sail set up and can't come close to the speeds you achieve ....so its obviously me and my technique and skill level. I always get my best speeds bearing off with my back foot between the back footstraps - it feels too unstable to bear off the wind with both feet in the straps also I use a waist harness and not sure I'm getting enough downforce on the boom

Nils three questions: 1) can you tell us the sizes of your set up on this day when you went 28 knots? Sail size, front wing and stabilizer size and wind speed. 2) why are you choosing not to use a back foot strap 3) what do you think is the most important element to increase speed for amatuer foilers

FW 560cm2 BW 210 cm2 6.8 Foilslalom sail, wind was generally 10-20kts

I've sanded my foil to smooth out nicks but I would not sharpen the trailing edges for safety reasons.

Hallo, was ist mit den anderen Dingen, die Pros machen: Lange Trapeztampe - über 40inch - oder ein tief sitzendes Trapez wie das Liberty? Da ist bestimmt mehr Verbesserung drinn als das Schleifen. Mit dem Trapez hoch und kurzen Tampen stehst Du sehr hoch und überziehst das Segel nach luv. Sieht immer noch wie Finne segeln aus.

It is impossible to detect a difference of a foil before and after sanding by just riding. It needs to be tested in hydrodynamic tube or channel where lift and drag is precisely measured. The experiment should be done on number of flow velocities and angles of attack. Only then it will be possible to analyze the results and figure out how significant a difference is. It could be a good lab work for a student who studies hydrodynamics.

I find it very interesting to see how top riders also make this videos of sanding and carefully choosing between same model to find the best. then on another photo they have dropped the foil, fin or the board a couple of cm down in the sand on the beach😂

I would not expect you to "feel" much difference in speed at all - simply because the anticipated level of improvement will in reality to be very small in practice - and it's far more dependent on other factors like wimd... Can you personallyfeel a 22 to a 24 knot difference on the water - as opposed to using a speed measurement device. The "feel" however is always a matter of personal opinion regardless - one person's "improvement" in feel is the next one's oversensitivity! However you can always revert back with a small expense by buying another stock example!

My thoughts exactly. Differences are so marginal and quite frankly the small level of speeds involved compared with flying an aeroplane in air rather than water wher the speeds MUST be greater to sustain flight for example that there is no need to sand foils other than to make sure the edges are not chipped. A foil that is sharp enough to cut someone picking it up becomes a lethal weapon in the water. Imagine colliding with a fish or worse, a swimmer/diver....
