Wow...that note rumbling away in the background. You can see you're having a lot of fun! Even driving it carefully. I just love the mad styling that MGs of this era had, it was a real change of direction to what they'd really done before going from what we see now as those classic sports cars to tuned Austin products and following on from the MG F/TF. Paul's kept this one in lovely condition!

The styling is certainly very overt, sir! It is funny how a Rover 45 V6 and an MG ZS 180 share ever so much, and yet the character of both is so different. It was a lot of fun, but I will always prefer my Rover. The design team at MG Rover did a fantastic job. This is a fast appreciating modern classic, and it is easy to see why.

My uncle had an early ZS180 in X-Power grey long before I was even able to learn to drive. I absolutely adored it and it was definitely an influencing factor when I bought my 45. Personally I loved this facelift. Hell I loved the facelift on all the MGs, it was the Rovers that suffered imo.

Yes, I do like this colour. As we own a 45 V6, and it isn't my first 45 either, I do understand what you mean... These facelifted cars are worth more money than the older ones, even with the issues I have mentioned, so I don't think that you are in the minority in preferring them!

I had a 2002 hatchback one of these back in 2006-8 and sold it as I wanted something different. Only car I ever regretted selling. I remember picking a mate up in it and accelerating up the slip road to join a motorway and he just turned to me and said "that's very impressive". Didn't need to say more.

I understand what you mean! The acceleration in a ZS 180 is brutal, the handling superb and the noise epic. I still prefer my Rover 45 V6 for daily duties, but this was ever so much fun! Thank you very much indeed for watching.

I owned an MG ZS 180 in X-Power Grey the same as that one. I had an induction kit on it which I was assured added about 10% to its power. If it didn't add more power it certainly added a sweeter note from the engine which was very distinctive. It is a pity when I owned it that I lived on a Scottish island where fuel cost 15p a Litre more than the mainland and it drank fuel at the rate of 5 miles to the litre. What a car it was one on my favourite cars I have ever owned in a list of nearly thirty cars.

Yes, these cars are very well set up for things like high speed driving, although I find the suspension just a bit hard for everyday driving, which is why I owned the Rover 45 V6 version. Not as powerful, and not quite as taut to drive, but much more comfortable. They have the same incredible steering too.

Great cars. Watching this review bring back very fond memories of the ZS18 I owned. My car was a 2003 hatchback in British Racing Green metallic. I can honestly say I wish I still had that car. Joining a dual carriageway or motorway on the slip road and accelerating up through the gears you could all too easily find yourself doing potentially license loosing speeds. I think my ZS180 played its part in my youngest daughter becoming a bit of a petrolhead. Good video, thanks and look forward to seeing more, present circumstances accepted.

Interesting views there Joseph. Enjoyed that. POINT OF ORDER JOSEPH Cylinder Head Gaskets rarely ever FAIL, on any car including MGs and Rovers. Invariably, they are first damaged by some other process. A multiplicity of reasons for that damage ranging from worn out components. Water Pumps a prime suspect with these engines, to perished hoses and even incompetence by those entrusted with the maintenance of the cars. Seen a number of clear instances of evidence of that! At an MG Saloon event round about 2000, I had a ride in a ZS180 pre-production factory "mule". The MG-R employee could drive a bit and that V6 really performed well on all roads. That sold me on an MG ZS for a replacement as the family runabout Montego was reaching the time for renewal with 133,000 reliable miles. The ZS V6 was more car than the family runabout needed. I waited and waited for the MG ZS 1.8 Petrol turbo fitted to the Rover 75 and MG ZT to become available. It never did so a normally aspirated 1.8 ZS was ordered and delivered in 2003. Still in the family fleet now eighteen years later with well North of 100,000 miles now. My daily driver for years has been and still is an MG ZT-T 1.8T with that engine I wanted and waited for to be in the MG ZS. Some years later, again at a car enthusiasts event, got talking to a former MG-Rover employee made redundant in April 2005 "insider" who told me the reason the 1.8T was not fitted to the smaller car, was it was believed it would undermine sales of the flagship of the ZS range, the KV6 ZS180. Having owned and driven several of the larger MG ZTs with the 1.8 Petrol Turbocharged engine in them, I can see that reasoning. Many enthusiasts have put that 1.8 Turbocharged K-Series in the smaller MG ZS and even smaller MG ZRs with very pleasing results. Having driven examples of all the variants, my view is that the MG ZR or MG ZS fitted with the lighter 1.8 Turbo K-Series would have been a good seller. I would have had one. MG-R missed out on that one... but there would be other reasons for that decision too. Then the receivers were called in and the rest as they say is history. I can never again have the pleasure of buying a new MG or Rover made in the former much more greener and pleasant. I can of course buy a new MG though, made in the peoples Republic of China. In fact I may well do if/when I go GREEN-EV. Killing time whilst the MG ZS was being MoT tested, I wandered along to the nearby MG Motor Showrooms. Lots of new MG EVs there including the new MG5 all electric. Now that car appeals... It's as near an Estate car as you can get nowadays, an ideal replacement for my ZT-T which is what I've always known as an Estate Car. The Chinese are not only coming, they are here. My immediate next door neighbour had a charging point fixed to his garage back in December. An MG ZS EV in a nice shade of pale blue now stands there. With a personal plate on it. That plate previously worn by a Lexus and Mercedes. Think about that. Car consumers appear to like them.

Yes, I have owned eight Rovers in total from the years 1990 to 2005, and three of them were K Series powered, so I do know a fair bit about them myself, including what happens when the head gaskets fail. My main mechanic, who has his own channel called "The Rubbish Mechanic", has done literally hundreds of K Series head gasket replacements, and his own 1.6 litre early Rover 45 was brilliant after he had worked his magic on it by replacing the standard gasket with a Lotus Elise set and making sure it was a brilliant fit. He got around 20 extra bhp over standard by doing it properly, and the car never had any problems of that nature again. Our Rover 45 V6 wouldn't be able to be kept on the road without a bit of his specialist knowledge, as the KV6 can be a bit of a pain (I know this first hand), but when they work well, as in this ZS 180 show car owned by Paul, my goodness so they work well. I think personally I also would have preferred the 1.8 Turbo K Series to be offered in the 45 and ZS (having tried it in a 2006 ZT 160 for No Budget Reviews), it was a lovely surprise, lots and lots of torque. We owned a 2014 MG3 1.5 Style from 2016 to early 2020, and it was actually a really good car. I have driven both pre and post-facelift MG6s, including the only automatic one in the country on Tweed Jacket Reviews, and I have always had a lot of fun with them. I have also tried every flavour of the MG ZS SUV, both manual and automatic pre and post-facelift as well as the ZS EV, the MG GS, the MG5 EV and the MG HS in both petrol and plug-in hybrid forms (all documented on the channel), and all I can say is the the post 2011 MG range is going from strength to strength. Of course they aren't perfect, but then no car really is, and the seven year warranty is now an excellent reason to choose one, let alone the superb value they offer.

I worked at an MG-Rover dealership when these were new and I must admit I didn't like the styling at the time, I thought it didn't suit the car and the image of a 45. However as part of my job I had the privilege of driving them fairly regularly and was blown away by the handling and the sound, was such a good car to drive. I now wonder how it would compare to a more modern hot hatch. Now looking at that mint example the style has grown on me. Very cool indeed.

Having driven multiple HH-R Rovers and owning a 45 V6 at the moment means that I know the standard ones pretty well, but this is a completely different type of car entirely. The sound of the engine and the limpet like grip with the precise steering are absolutely addictive. The ride really is a bit hard for me, and the bodykit is too extrovert, but I respect these cars enormously....

What an interesting vehicle! Being in the US, we never received these vehicles, but the styling is quite unique, and very distinctive! They way it is currently, Sideview reminds me of a Nissan Maxima. Front fascia is typical for the series, and rear end styling is very distinctive and unique, like no other vehicle I can recall off the top of my head. Another brilliant observation and video Joseph, one I thoroughly enjoyed!

I really seriously considered buying a 2003 MG ZS hatchback in 2003 in the metallic blue shade. Unfortunately it wouldn't have been this wonderful ZS 180. It would almost certainly have been a 1.4 or one that we cannot discuss. The 2004 facelift really looks the business and if I do ever decide to buy a ZS to keep it will be a ZS 180.

Yes sir, the 1.4 was not available in this country, only in the Republic of Ireland and some other countries. The facelifted ones are more desirable, even if they have more issues. Thank you for watching, sir!

@@jonathanmeeson623 , I think MG Rover did the right thing making two different cars from the same platform. I need 125 miles in a day plus cruising ability sometimes, and so the cruise control, softer suspension and automatic gearbox suit the 45 V6 for that purpose very well. For a blast down a B Road or on a track, it is the ZS 180 every time. It all comes down to personal preference as to which one is more suitable, I don't think it is a question of one being better than the other, as they cater to such different tastes.

Hello from Australia. I bought yesterday one of 40 face-lifted 180s brought into Oz back then. It's in XPower metallic grey, 2004 model and has done 54,000 miles from new. it presents like a car a few years old with full history. This car is considered a bit of an orphan in Oz as few if any people know about it, unlike the UK. The cabin is a bit basic and a little cheap/dated etc but this car is all about the driving and handling - it goes so well. The seller said he'd never seen another one in the 5 years he'd owned it (he was the fourth owner) - how many survive here!? I reckon mine must be the lowest mileage example here? It will get used now.

Yes, they are far more common over here. Numbers of ZS 180s are around 3-4,000, I think, my Rover 45 V6 is far rarer with around 70 on the road at the moment. I didn't realise too many of them were still around in Australia at all, not surprised the seller had never seen another, you would probably have to go to a show to do so. Of those 3-4,000, I wonder how many are the face-lifted 2004 plus versions? I've a friend in UK who owns a classic car business, he's had a few Rover V6 45s and a few pre-face lifted SVs through his yard, but has yet to see a post 2004 SV for a while. Another interesting thing about my SV here is that it has two very little enamelled Australian flag badges on both front door handles - I wonder if these were some kind of factory placement in 'honour' of the 40 going to Australia?

Great review of a wonderful car! Despite the slightly boy racer-ish styling these had a terrific chassis set up that gave them superb handling. And the 180 was fast. These were great cars that belied the rather dated platform they were built on. Although these had a firm ride it wasn't excessive like a Mitsubishi Evo (those really were firm).

The handling is absolutely ridiculous, and yes, they are very fast. The HH-R platform is very similar to the EG/EH/EJ Honda Civic from 1991, but quite honestly it is a good platform with well designed suspension and mostly reliable components, hence why it was so easy to make this handle so well. I have driven a Lancer Evolution X on track, and it was brilliant, although the on road experience would have been a bit different.

Great handling cars! Regarding rust the main problem area on these (and the 400/45 that its based on) is as you say underneath on the front floors/jacking points. Also sometimes the inner front wheel wells by the brake pipe mountings and behind wheel arch liners can rust too. The rear arches aren't so much an issue really on the 45/ZS, however interestingly they did sometimes rust out on the 400 (hhr)...... All Rover 200/25, and 600's rust on the rear arches though as you probably know! The ZS 180 does have an PG1 gearbox. The IB5 gearbox do also eventually get a loose/sloppy gear change unfortunately, but still seem to slot in to gear ok. The old R65 however, while its the notchiest/crunchiest gear chnage of the lot, it does seem to keep a nice tight gear change and doesn't go sloppy and loose like the pg1 and IB5

Sadly, I realised about the gearbox too late. Never mind! Yes, I had an IB5 in a Rover 25 that had done 93,000 miles and that did go a bit floppy... Unfortunately, I have also had a very floppy gearchange on the R65 in the 68,000 mile R3 that I had made years ago, and that was very notchy too. Low mileage R65s are very nice, though. PG1s do also go pretty nasty at high mileage to the extent that I thought I had broken the gearbox in the car I was driving. You are probably right, the 1996 416 SLi Automatic I had did go rusty on the rear arches, and although I wouldn't say the later HH-Rs are immune to it, but it isn't as common at all. The floor rust can occur at as little as five years old, as my 2004 Rover 45 showed me in 2009, although it is generally pretty easy to catch and treat early, which is what we did with my 45 V6. That's right, the R3s, 25s and 600s all like to rust on the rear arches, I have owned all three, and they all did it.

Although it's nice to hear Joseph wax lyrical about the ZS180 it's a double edged sword for me as I quite like the fact many uniformed car owners just dismiss it as a Rover shed, that is untill they are unlucky enough to lock horns with one on track. I have been a owner for nearly 20 years and it still gives me that big grin on the face when taking it out for the early Sunday morning drive when you can really enjoy what it's capable of. I always liked one of the quotes I read in a car magazine of the time" MGZS180 is proof you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear 😁👍

It is an excellent car. I do prefer my 45 V6, due to the less extrovert styling and the more comfortable ride, but I would quite like a manual gearbox now that I have driven this. It most certainly is something which can make even a short drive very, very entertaining indeed.

The facelift was very well resolved, the gill strakes in the wings are a great touch. Another what could have been model if there was just a little more time, can you imagine this with an enlarged 3L KV6? A lot of them are seen as decent track day cars which is great and a shame, as it shows people appreciate their capability, but lets face it track day cars almost never live long.

Yes, I do like the facelifted Rover 45s, having owned one, but now I have my 45 V6, I don't think I will be looking to change it for some time to come. Yes, who knows what could have been achieved with even more power, given this chassis? Absolutely brilliant for track days, but I imagine lots of these have been thrashed now for that reason.

Yes, this is a lovely car! The Pektron security systems fitted to these later cars (and all the associated bits that go with them) are really not my favourite, and although the new dashboard looks nice (Paul has smartened it up with some genuine Audi TT vents), it is not soft touch like the older ones are, and they are liable to cracking. My 2004 45 1.4 Club SE had these problems and more, being a facelift car.

I think the early 75s were good quality I've heard the later ones were poorly built as rover did "project drive" a last Ditch attempt to save as much money on the production line as possible.

When I first insured mine around 2016 it was one of the cheapest cars to insure ever. I was 27 years old, 0 ncb and only car and it cost about £125 fully comp, on a classic car policy with Peter best although it was limited to 5000 miles. It was one of the main reasons I bought it at the time, I could have a 1ltr fiesta and pay just over a grand insurance or buy a v6 sports car for £500 and insure it for £125.

Wow! That is interesting you can get these on a classic policy. Seems ridiculous to be paying so little for cover on a ZS 180. Mind you, I think Paul has this car on a classic policy too, as it doesn't get used that much, due its incredible condition. I love my 45 V6, but I have huge respect for these cars, and am glad to have driven one!

The Focus ST is a good car, sir, but I prefer this one. The facelifted ones do have a different interior, as you can see, but clearly some 1980s Honda switchgear is still there.

That was a nice looking car. Not exactly subtle though. I do like the last face lift of these... on the outside at least. The interior was, as a design, starting to show its age. And their, no budget, upgrades were not helping.

Yes, it's not subtle, but it gives the car more personality for certain. A lot of people do like these facelifted cars, and I understand why. The interior changes don't quite to the same extent, though...

why would you want a diesel... fuel prices go brrr... also personal preference, but i hate the digital heaters, i love the retro like i have in my 2004, sadly im still working on it as i am also getting my license still... rip me.
