MINI R53 Fitting a double din carplay headunit install Orranje Double Din Surround R50 R52 GP JCW

Items purchased to do the swap:
Sony Headunit, many different ones work with this surround, this is the one I went for as I got a used bargain: www.sony.co.uk/electronics/in.... They also list it works with:

The wiring you get with this kit is what you need, you could get it cheaper by buying them seperately as you dont need the surround from this kit, basically you need:
CTMULTILEAD.2 Universal Patch Lead
Fakra Aerial Adaptor

No need to loosen the gearstick surround at all to get the pillars out Pull the plastic dash surround under the speedo dial and they remove easily

It all depends on the year of the mini as I said in the video. Some year pillars can be pulled upwards, some years have a bulbous part at the bottom which means they have to be pulled out from underneath the trim they sit in. It’s a facelift/pre-facelift difference

Love these videos mate. One suggestion, if i am allowed to make one, is to put the camera somewhere stable as it is very hard to see what you do with it moving all the time , it is making you dizzy , not gonna lie. Cheers keep it up

nice job dude! I've just done a homebrew double din install for my R53 w/an underseat powered slim subwoofer. As I will not be tracking mine, it's perfect for having some tunes while out and about.

No worries, the only thing I’m stuck on is where did you splice in the steering controls, I know you showed the diagram but do you need to splice those ‘key 1’ wires into the car loom?

@Phillc748 it all depends on which brand aftermarket stereo you have. For Sony I didn’t need to splice any wires, I literally just connected to the main block. There are tonnes of videos on KZbin on how to use the “CTMULTILEAD.2 Universal Patch Lead” if you use something different to Sony. They also do versions of this lead specific to your headunit brand

This doesn’t have the HK system does it? Or does it and that’s what the wiring adapter you had when you were showing all the harnasses?

No HK. If you have HK there’s another adaptor you have to get

Does this headunit have reverse hackup camera connection?

Yes it does, the others Orranje recommend that work with that surround probably do too

Did you lower the switches and there for lose the cup holders?

Yes it drops the switches. Those cup holders are so tiny and pointless compared to modern day drink bottles/cups. There’s the one behind the handbrake or if you are stationary, two in the glove box. Finally you can get aftermarket cup holder extenders for the front r53 cup holders, I’ve not used those but they look like they would work with this setup giving you two front cup holders, so I've ordered one to try: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1563048481/

Hi the second generation just like any other car has its weaknesses. Good service history is a good indicator. I’m sure all engines that came in them has some sort of weakness as do all engines. I would go for any model that has a good service history and low miles. The n14 issues are well document but can be reliable with regular maintenance. The SD again had its issues but a good service history again and ensuring timing chain has been done
