On the topic of coaching and the culture. Last weekend at the Tekken world tour finals during Lowhigh vs Arslan there was a moment where knee came to coach lowhigh and Atif came to coach arslan. Legendary moment of the top players from the 2 best regions using all their resources to be the best. And to add even more context previously Lowhigh had been hated by the Korean community for some drama. So for knee to come on stage and help him for the sake of beating Pakistan it meant a lot

haz made a rlly good point about the culture of smash being so important. melee culture is untouchable - it lives and breathes through that way more than the increasing skill level of the players problem with ult imo is that there are so many things that just completely fucking suck to watch. and it's hard because we have these cool guys in our scene like everyone on the pod, but it's seemingly hard to maintain authenticity in a commentary block when you're watching a steve mine behind a wall for 5 minutes without sounding negative. i think max ketchum and the luminosity guys understand that, which is what made lmbm so much fun. we have sick personalities in the esport, theyre just hindered by whats in front of them sometimes lol

one thing I've always found great about TK's commentary is that he really does just understand the game state, and can say the simplest thing to convey it, and then you'll see something happen in game related to said game state, and you realize "yeah, TK was just 100% correct about what he just said" and honestly listening to TK's commentary has made me way better at watching a game and understanding things quickly TK the goat fr, great episode y'all

Another one of my viewer perspectives here: 1) I love the idea of coaching during the Top 8. It's plausible to find 8 coaches at most tournaments. I cannot commit to watch an entire tournament b/c they are too damn long. I try to set aside time to truly watch Top 8, and even those take too long. I get my shit done, get kids settled, and otherwise fully prep as much as I can to clear that time. When I'm in that time period, I want to watch players be at their best b/c that is what is most entertaining to me. If coaching can enhance players, then it should (may not always) in turn enhance the gameplay and thus increase my enjoyment. When I tune into Top 8, I'm ready for the competition to bump up a notch. 2) I agree with Charles' priority of the ecosystem and maximizing entertainment. I just want a solid, manageable block of time where I can see the best duke it out. I don't give matches pre-top-128 my full attention for time and entertainment purposes. I tune in to see good gameplay and watch some specific players (e.g. Tweek, Leo, Gluttony, Sparg0, SkyJay). But everyone starts somewhere. I would like those earlier matches to be more entertaining, and maybe that is achievable. I would care about those matches much more if some meaning could get cooked up. Arcadian had some good ideas. It might be cool to see a minor league or circuit offer up similar rewards. If a player can make a name for themselves in the lesser league, it can help spotlight them and create some stories surrounding their journey. Once spotlighted, it would perhaps give viewers a reason to watch that player in the earlier matches of a tournament.

Excellent episode, I was worried not that the episode would bad but that it may not be my episode. TK great vibe, conversations were versatile and interesting. Not competitor but an avid viewer, I agree with Charles about not modest coaching, but top 8 and invitationals, yeah, why not. It’s more equal, and the players left or invited aren’t gonna be intimidated or turned off from competing. I like what you said about castors not being negative in certain ways. I think it’s too late but the Steve talk created an air that’s toxic enough even casual viewers see a Steve on screen and cringe and think bad of the player that picks them and that turns people away. Viewers take the word of their favorite top players as dogma, and presenting information in very pessimistic or worse vitriol ways shifts the opinions of a wider scope than hopefully intended, because the community is important to their livelihood. I do get that competing comes high emotional variance so no one can be perfect and authenticity is important for building fans as well. You guys are all great, excellent chemistry! Congrats on LMBM Tweek! I don’t think I commented last week!

i disagree with midset coaching for the same reason as charles. i've seen first hand how big of a difference it can do for some players. i helped a played consistently win 2 sets vs bracket demons 3 weeks in a row back when i played when it was a thing... also i think the ability to adapt mid game is a great part of individual player skill when it comes to fighting games. i dont like the other sports comparisons because 1. the other sports are usually team based to begin with . 2. a lot of them that allow coaching has the whole thing where their players are constantly getting hurt, being physical... I think smash or fighting games are a lot more mental (with extremely little physical requirements) so mid set coaching would take some part of that away in my honest opinion.. (side note: tennis does not allow mid set coaching)...... I do like tweek's idea for it happen in top 8s tho

I'm glad yall brought up how mid-set coaching should be legal. If ppl can mod their controls to make tech easier, then how is getting some to critique their gameplay any different? For both scenarios you gotta still execute the strategies. If ya wanna be like the main sports, or the larger E-Sports then midset coaching should be allowed. I remember I had a short conversation with my doubles partner during grands of a tournament. "Get your head in the game or we can just forfeit and go home now, I know you can play better, but that's up to you,, decide" Needless to say the pep talk worked and we won the tourney, I'm all for coaching, it's literally apart of every sport,

In the working and competing section of the video, I totally get Charles’s point. Time is finite. It all comes down to what your priorities are. If you want to be the best at something, or at least elite. You’ll need to grind A LOT. Tweek in one of his older Tweek Talks videos talks about how he used to play Smash sun up to sun down. I can guarantee you that was the foundation that led to him becoming a top player. Mkleo is another example. When he was winning every tournament, he used to play 8 hours a day. Repetition is the mother of skill.

Which explains why Leo isn't number 1 anymore. He said he doesn't play nearly enough like he used too. Also, he said Smash isn't his priority any longer since his family now is pretty much taken care of.

Honestly, i’d be down for coaching through text in between games, with the same 30 second or however long time limit to look at your phone for any reason. Players can get info on habits or things to stop doing quickly, and if they wanna ask a question, odds are they’re not getting an answer until the next game anyways. It also helps with charles concern about losing and then have to watch a guy explain how to beat you even more, and it might encourage more new players to talk to people at tournaments. And if it’s an on-stream match, same thing with the 30 second timer, maybe limit it to once during the set, but sure, let player’s coaches do their thing on stage. It’ll put more eyes on them too, potentially bring in some more jobs for the community or local scenes

Player 1’s coach: “Every time he normal getups he rolls in” Player 2’s coach, who isn’t as good at the game (assuming they even have a coach): you got this man, you’re doing amazing. Just because both people have a coach, which by the way won’t happen because not everyone has a friend at the major events they flew out to, doesn’t mean they are the same caliber of coach. There is a clear unfair advantage. Do your homework before the set dude. There’s plenty of time. If you can’t overcome your opponent without a bird in your ear do you deserve the win?

Was spectating Grands at my local one time and one of the players asked if he could talk to his coach. The TO who ran it had never been asked before so he was like sure. The player that had asked for it was very clearly not in a good headspace that day and was about to lose in 0-3 already being down 0-2. What no one there knew is that he had asked his best friend to be his coach. His friend proceeds to jump up on the stage with a water bottle and shake his friends shoulders saying "WAKE THE FUCK UP." He then tried to do what those in the NFL do where if a player wants water they have those squeeze Gatorade bottles, but he didn't aim right and absolutely blasted his friend in the face with water. But that moment made everyone laugh so hard that he actually ended up playing better despite being soaked and brought it all the way to Game 5 (still lost the set though). But ya, stuff like that is why coaches can be a great thing. Sometimes you just need that mental reset or break, not any actual advice or tips.

I mean at least he’s knowledgeable and actually describes the best option analytically. M2K tries to break down what’s optimal; that’s just how he is. But other commentators that do this don’t even give alternatives; they just dog on the competitor to try and make themselves look smart.

@@j.prt.979 yeah that what I like about M2k. He’s enthusiastic about the game and knowledgeable about the game and his enthusiasm is contagious but, he needs to tone down on backseat commentating. A little bit of it doesn’t hurt but when you do it a lot it can get annoying. M2k seems like a nice guy and I can see him being a good commentator but he needs to work on it.
