Speaking as a local goer whose locals switched from midwest unified to this new ruleset, I was against it before actually trying it mainly bc fd being a starter, sv being a counterpick and ps2 not being a starter. Then I actually tried it out, and I've really come around to it, I've gotten more opportunities to pick a more beneficial stage for me when losing while before usually all my good stages were banned because of 3 bans so I just ran it back to ps2 or sbf. It seems bad at first, but I think if you give it a fair chance you'll appreciate what the goals of the stagelist are and the opportunity to actually benefit from a counterpick.

I see this often. Nintendo Fans are mostly weirdly neutral about Metroid. I see the Gameplay Reveal and look at one of the most beautiful games to look at ever. I don't get it. It's like people refuse to just give Metroid a try for some reason.

The new Mario and Luigi from the direct looked nice. Hope it gets ported to the Switch 2 upon its release. Bowsers Inside Story is a top 3 Mario game for me.

Just starting the episode - My tinfoil hat take on the direct is that the Metroid 4 trailer was not switch gameplay. For every trailer, they do the classic "Now please look at this" followed by the switch *Snap* but they didn't do the snap for Metroid. Intentional? What does it mean?

Pretty sure Nintendo was using Wii U footage of BOTW even in 2016 before the Switch was formally shown, so I doubt Nintendo would use Switch 2 footage here for Metroid

The impression I'm getting is that the data points are points from surveys and it's based on the survey takers' preferences. That's a subjective data point versus something more objective. And more importantly, it seemed the ruleset wasn't designed with any intentions to counter or nerf any particular dominant meta characters. I don't have any strong opinion over the ruleset itself beyond being pleased that it encourages more stage diversity through modified DSR and PS2 being a counterpick. However, I am thrilled to hear Dakpo talk about wanting to do seasonal rulesets. I think the bigger boon from the unified ruleset initiative is that there's a framework in place to produce new rulesets. That being said, the framework needs to include some experimental phase, or some TO (maybe Luminosity with their invitationals?) to take one for the team and take risks and run an experimental ruleset to generate objective data. I get there are huge financial stakes at risk, but if people are complaining about X,Y,Z characters being unhealthy for the meta, and others calling top Smash boring, someone's gotta take the lead and take risks. Group votes like this will only play out in safe and conservative choices to try and appease everyone. For this reason, I wouldn't want to see a unified ruleset early on for SSB7 (3DS and Wii U were considered 4 and 5, no?), you want to generate as much diverse data as possible before funneling everyone into a single ruleset. And I got a kick out of the story Dakpo brought up of Nintendo's intervention on the EU tournament that initially banned Steve. Competitive Smash bros barely uses 10% of what this game has to offer (probably more like 60%, but I gotta downplay characters for hyperbolic effect). I'm sure we can get to 15% while achieving the objective of determining who the best player at the tournament is in a fair manner.

Well they've said they will br announcing it within this fiscal year and I doubt they'd announce it over a year before release so holiday 2025 - early 2026 seems the most likely

They did a 6 month period between the first reveal of the Switch, October 2016 and its release in March 2017. Not unlikely the new console will release this fiscal year (ending March 31st 2025).

Here's what I hope Nintendo gives us for the next game in terms of stages: Stages once again all have a flat ("omega") variant. This flat variant now has 3 sizes: small, medium and large (lets just say 140, 160 and 180 units) They then give us 5 or however many platform layouts that we can apply to any of the flat variants. So you could have, for example: medium size, no platforms (Final Destination) large size, 2 platforms next to each other (PS2) medium size, triple platforms (Battlefield) medium size, singular platform (Hollow Bastion) medium size, platform moving from left to right (hazards Smashville) ... and so on You could have players start on medium for game one, then the loser gets to ban a size. Banning layouts wouldn't be any different to how it is now. What this really solves for me is seeing more series represented in the stage list. I like the proposed unified stagelist overall, but it kind of bothers me how there's only 3 series represented besides Smash itself: Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Kingdom Hearts. Very little variety in terms of visuals and music (tho I guess you do get different music on the Battlefields). Just some thoughts. Would love to hear what y'all think.

i think that’s an interesting idea, however i don’t think that would be super likely for nintendo to implement. i think that would be a bit complicated to have access to when you are selecting a stage for a casual player, and nintendo likes making things simple

Cool idea but this feels more like a stage builder feature/idea rather than something you could even feasibly wish for in the next game, especially with how full-on competitive it is. Also, a competitive ruleset forsakes variety to _be_ competitive so top players won't care about series representation anyways(sucks for us viewers but that's just how it is). Having so many options for a stage(even just switching layouts) kinda just removes the point of that stage, and every other stage, existing in the first place and can be a hassle trying to get back to the original layout if you accidently change it(if implemented)

I feel like this episode really showed the NA mindset of not really focussing on gameplans and instead going by feel instead and just trying to outplay the opponent. Between Tweek admitting that he has never thought about counterpick stages, Pink and Tweek thinking that stages aren't that important and the poll results exposing some of the community "consensus" as just being old habits...
