"Twenty Two" is episode 53 of the American television series The Twilight Zone. The story was adapted by Rod Serling from a short anecdote in the 1944 Bennett Cerf Random House anthology Famous Ghost Stories, which itself was an adaptation of "The Bus-Conductor", a short story by E. F. Benson published in The Pall Mall Magazine in 1906. The episode was one of six shot on videotape in a short-lived experiment aimed to cut costs.

Can you please review Book Of Life, Miss Paragrine's Home For Peculiar Children, or A House With A Clock In It's Walls please? I feel as if people don't really talk about these movies enough. Book Of Life is an animated kids' movie that was overlooked by the later released movie: Coco, Miss Paragrine's is a live action book-based kids' movie that envolves inhuman slenderman-esc things that eat eyes with the ability to turn invisible, and Clock In It's Walls is another live action kids' movie with some creepy moments here and there and a necromanced worlock antagonist!!

I actually give it a solid recommendation for someone who knows nothing about the episode in advance. I felt this episode was scary. To me, it really felt like the creepiness of a bad dream. Something is off, unnerving. The lack of music during her dream adds to that feeling. We all know what it feels like to have that feeling like something isn’t right. The audience being able to make a connection with the character allows us to feel as frightened as her.

Variations of this story also appeared in Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz and in the TV series, Beyond Belief Fact or Fiction. Arlene Martel is amazing in it. She only has one line but she delivers it differently. In the dream, she's threatening and spooky. She gives you a sinister vibe like she's going to kill her or she's an angel of death. On the plane, she is cordial and friendly like she is doing her job and trying to make her feel welcome. When Liz runs off, she even has this expression like "I wonder what that was all about. I hope she's alright" before she closes the door.

This episode in particular, the aspect of horror involved with it makes it chilling. Each time the dream sequence occurs, it’s always expected, but it’s done so well that we’re baffled each time. Another thing, yes, the video drastically takes away from it, but it does also help set the atmosphere in most scenes. Overall, I think it was well done, not perfect, but enough to keep me watching it. Fun fact, not sure if this is completely true or not, but I heard that that final scene of the plane exploding and the reoccurring dream sequences leading up to the climax, was what inspired the scene from Final Destination 1. Not sure if it’s true or not, but similarities are pretty clear through this episode and the film’s introduction

In all the video-taped episodes of 'The Twilight Zone', the cameras used image orthicon tubes. Whether or not it was the only one around or the cheapest to get isn't explained. It's highly noticed in the scene where the plane explodes by dark blooming immediately surrounding the bright light of the explosion. This is because the tube could not deal with bright lights effectively. In all the other 'Twilight Zone' episodes made on tape you can make out some darkening on bright surfaces or objects or when a light is shining or reflecting directly onto the camera.

Just a general impression but I've always been amazed at how classic TZ manages to be both dated and timeless at the same time, something which few shows have the capability of being. In its best installments, you can see the dated elements actually enhance the mood of the episode making it feel like a nicely aged wine, at peak perfection BECAUSE of its age rather than in spite of. "Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room" is a prime example of this, while actual $4 hotel rooms are long gone, the reference still gives one a great sense of just how low the main character is in life thus giving what happens during the episode even further gravitas...I recommend any TZ fan that hasn't seen that episode to watch it just to see what I mean. No other iteration of TZ has managed to achieve this same level of general quality and intrigue, a show that was a clear product of its time which managed to make that its overall greatest asset and become timeless as a result. Truly worthy of being considered one of the all-time greatest TV shows period...👍♥️

This is like another story from the anthology film “Dead of Night” in which the character telling the story recounts how he has a dream about an horse drawn hearse and the driver says “Room for one more upstairs” and then later is about to board a London bus (a double decker) when the conductor says “Room for one more upstairs”, which cause the narrator to stay of the bus, which leaves and crashes off a bridge. Since the film was made in 1945 they both must have been derived from the same source.

By using my favourite number, it instantly got my attention! The source materials for this episode was also used for a section of the anthology horror movie, Dead of Night. If this was better cast and recorded on regular stock, this could have great as well.

4:10 it's not the videotape, but the tube of the cameras that creates this effect.

i have enjoyed your twilight zone reviews and agreed or could see your point on most of them. However saying the lonely is better than 22 or only gets a soft recommendation just made me need to comment. if other fans agree with you than i’m happy to stand defiantly as one who believes this is a must watch of the series. i can still feel the unease of not knowing whether what i’m seeing is dream or reality in this episode. anyway love the videos and look forward to the rest for this year and beyond but i couldn’t let one of my favorite episodes be dismissed as just an ok episode

Actually it's not the video tape that caused the blackened image around the bright explosion; it was the image orthicon tube used in the video camera. This effect can be seen in all classic B+W video recorded shows and a similar effect on color ones up until the point that CCD sensors were finally used in the late 80's/early 90's and the last orthicon's stopped being used in TV production. Usually even on color video recordings from an orthicon tube, any bright reflection from a glass, silverware, etc.. will leave a smear as the camera pans away or the object is moved due to the fading dark halo effect from the previously over-activated parts of the camera tube at the center of the bright part.

I read the story that this episode is based on and the original ending the protagonist doesn’t get on an elevator that ends up falling and killing everyone, which is, unfortunately, a better ending than the one we got here. I mean, a plane just randomly exploding in mid air? Really?
@LucyLioness100

There are a lot of different variations. I’ve read the elevator one, came across another version where it was a hotel that burned to ground many years before and the protagonist had a “Back There” moment

Seconded, the payoff seems anticlimactic compared to the original story, which actually makes a lot more logical sense!

Don't you know planes do that all the time. It's the bag of napalm they keep for special occasions, and flying over Vietnam. (this was the 50's-60's, after all)

I remember seeing Arlene Martel in a flurry of TV shows from this era! I particularly remember her from two episodes of The Monkees. One was when she portrayed a Russian spy trying to get a microfilm from the guys in a spy caper, then in the second season played a vampire dating Davy! Both with Eastern European accents.

also in an Outer Limits episode. It appears she would autograph that famous shot from this TZ episode, it's certainly right up there in popularity with any appearance from a TV show from that era. In seeing it again just now, still sends a shiver up my spine.

I really enjoy Marc Scott Zicree's very fine book The Twilight Zone Companion, BUT I most respectfully disagree on with his dismissive review of TWENTY TWO. Even Jack Smight the guy who directed the episode, felt the same way as Zicree: he didn't care for it either. Yet despite people writing it off, this episode has persevered & taken on a life of it's own. The Phantom Nurse is an iconic TZ character. It's always been one of my favorites & I strongly feel that it's actually one of the top 10 best TZ episodes. The spooky atmospheric music by Nathan Van Cleave is great - really adds to the episode.

I'll go along with the whole experience being a nightmare, the doctor, and Mr. Kaminer seemed so sure of themselves, but had the doctor been somewhere in close proximity to the basement floor, and heard Liz's creepy scream of horrifying torment?

Surprised you never mentioned that the plane was Flight 22, the same number as the morgue. I even replayed the video 3 times to see if I'd missed it since that detail is kind of important to the whole story. Or any mention of all the connections to her dream. It was more than just a bad feeling that she got about getting on that plane. I'd like to point out the doctor saying how could she know the morgue is room 22 when she's never been down to the basement and seen it. That added some more eeriness to the story. And in her dream she always hears a loud ticking clock, feels thirsty and her water glass falls and shatters on the floor. At the airport she also hears the clock, felt thirsty, and a vase or something shatters on the floor. She hears it's Flight 22 and then sees the nurse from her nightmares saying the same, "Room for one more". Love how it meant one more in the morgue and then changed to mean one more on the plane, which in the end still leads to the morgue. But no wonder she had such a huge reaction about getting on the plane. The twist is that her nightmare turned out to be a prediction about the future. So I think this episode deserves a bit more credit. The one thing I found jarring was one minute they're sedating her and the next she's all better and being discharged. The episode also left me wondering what happened to her. Did she turn into a basket case from the experience or did she realize her dream actually saved her and did she have more predictions in the future?
