Dude… This video got me thinking and as a result, you may be on to something. In your previous TZ video about the couple in the cabin, (trio in the cabin if you count RIP the dog), you had a theory about that episode being connected to The Beverly Hillbillies. A preview of things to come as it were. What if this episode is another part of that “preview of things to come” with the pin being the clue instead of a cabin? Pixar was known to do that, throw little clues about their next production in a previous film. Rod Serling was a creative genius, so why wouldn’t he have conceived this idea for the Twilight Zone? Just a thought. Great video! You’re going strong! 💪

I believe it was a common rendition of what the devil looked like so it would be easy for people to recognize whenever it popped up.

But it was so hard to see with it being so small. You must know how fuzzy TV were back in 1960 and the audience would have never seen it. Rod knew that. It’s almost like he wanted it to be found later on. Now that we have HD resolution, we can see it

Correct, the Devil was more common and recognizable character, novelty store item and like the Coca Cola Santa it had a generalized look. They aren't fangs on the pin but a long moustache. Devil images back then had the moustache or a pointy goatee. The pin looks like a costume/novelty item.

Cool, but I think that you're overthinking it. The devil was a recurring character in TZ. When you specialize in morality stories, that happens. The connection all these shows would have had is the production crew at the studio. Rod Serling likely had nothing to do with set decoration, props, or costuming other than maybe a stage direction of some kind in the script. When you use the devil as a character, the art kind of defines itself. They even did it full scale in The Howling Man later on.

Great catch there, I never noticed the detail of the pin. Nick of Time is one of my favorite episodes. Whoever designed the devil character did a really good job, it’s beyond sinister and creepy with its snaggle toothed grin. Lots to ponder in both of these great episodes.

Cool video Rick, Ok, here's a guess: The prop master was asked to create it as a little extra touch that was originally intended to be shown on camera (such as Bedecker noticing it during his meeting with Cadwallader; who knows: it may have even been created for Cadwallader to pin onto Bedecker as a welcome to the club gesture) which may have been shot and later edited out. Then when the episode Nick Of Time came around and a "mystic seer machine" was needed, the prop master decided to give it one more try and took the design of the lapel pin and used it for all of the machines in the diner.

If you search "vintage devil pin", you will see they've been making devil pins for quite some time. I would guess it was a pin they bought, and it became a TZ prop. Then when it came time for the fortune teller machine, they based the devil off of the pin. Because it does look like it's the same character.

I'd never noticed that lapel pin before. Good catch! I don't think it's necessarily related to the devil from the later episode, but who can be sure? I love seeing all the people I know from later tv shows here, like David Wayne (The Mad Hatter, as you mentioned), Raymond Bailey (Mr. Drysdale later, wearing a toupee by then), Virginia Christine (the poor wife), who played Mrs. Olson on Folger's Coffee commercials years later, and as two insurance adjusters Joe Flynn (Capt. Binghamton of MCHALE'S NAVY) and Dick Wilson (Charmin's own Mr. Whipple & the frequently-seen drunk on BEWITCHED).

I was young when this stuff was on TV, but I've always been a lot more observant than most people........and have been all of my life. Most "big time" writers and producers, especially ones with their own shows, hid bits and pieces of themselves in their work. Like Hitchcock always being in the background somewhere........Serling liked giving little hints of his humor, with, sarcasm, and irony that he found amusing. I'm not sure what the devil face meant to him personally, but safe to say, it was one of those things where he probably thought "They'll never guess why". LOL

Rick you would need to research the Twilight Zone's art director. He may have made up a lot of props to be used for certain episode titles ahead of time. The pin was probably made the same time as the bobble head. Keep in mind, in that era, the producers of TV shows had a sense of humor.

I think you're reaching on this one. The classic devil look is the one we see here. Horned, pointed ears, pointy chin. The same could be said of the devil in the episode "The Howling Man". I don't think Serling planned this at all.

The theory is a bit over-thought when it gets to being impressed with Rod Serling hiding a background character. It’s just two different 50s vintage red devil characters, and it’s not so surprising that the Devil comes up repeatedly in the twilight zone. They made a slightly different aesthetic choice with the Devil in The Howling Man. The one here might be a stylistic ancestor of the Kalynn Campbell design you can buy at Walmart today and of Futurama’s robot devil (pointy chin and van dyke style) but the one on the label pin here stands out from all of the others I’ve mentioned by having its horns above the hairline.

It may have been just a common picture, or drawing of the devil that was used as a model to make the pin and the Mystic seer. You may also notice that the costume of the character changes into the devil in the episode, the howling man. After the guy is freed from the so-called holding cell, as he’s walking away, and changing back to the devil, he obtains that same look. Check it out, episode is called the howling Man, and I don’t know which season or episode it was from.

Rick! I've got it!! Hear me out... Cadwallader allows Walter Bedeker to live thousands of years into the future, and such a deal with the devil "sentences" Bedeker to take on an alter ego in a different dimension. Bedeker becomes one of Cadwallader's demon minions, taking on evil himself and lives his life as Jervis Tetch, aka The Mad Hatter, in the DC Universe! [great video, great catch]

Because Twilight Zone is in Black and White, it's a little hard to tell. The pin looks like the Duke Blue Devils logo from the 1950's. It could also be the logo from The Underwood Company, who used a Devil for their logo. In the 1950's they just used the devil's head as the logo.

The devil is played by Thomas gomez he played Meade in the sherlock Holmes movie "the voice of terror" from 1943 Staring Basel Rathbone he gained weight but that's him another weird thing

Looking at both images they are so much different, even though the pin is not clearly focused you can see a huge difference in the coloring, or shading might be a better word since it was black and white; the dimensional proportions, and especially no similarity that I can recognize in the eyes; the head in the Shatner scene being very unique. I personally think the whole thing was coincidental because both were focused on the satanic imagery to make visual points in the show. This was a Rod Serling trademark style.

It's a coincidence. They likely did not even have the prop for the "Mystic Seer" at this point. Anyway, nobody watching the show on TV in 1959 would have been able to zoom in and see what that pin was. Black and white TV pictures were snowy as hell back then. Somebody probably had the pin left over from Halloween and stuck it on that suit for fun.

I believe you are thinking too hard. The hair on the pin is black, not the one on the device. The horns on the device are black. The horns on the pin are white. You weren't around back in those days, but the Devil was a lot more ubiquitous then as an item you could see on combat aircraft from WWII, in dime stores, automotive displays, TV vacuum tube checkers at the convenience store, Underwoods Deviled Ham, etc, and so on and so on!

No, I had never noticed the little pin before despite how many times I've seen this (and every other) episode, so thanks! It might be connected, but not necessarily. What this says to me is that Cadwallader, by wearing it as a quiet sign of what he's actually all about while neatly attired in a modern-day suit and speaking in well-mannered subtleties, is established as a clever trickster yet, as you say, does not deny his true identity. His way of operating, as we learn, is to lead his victim, who we clearly see is deserving of his fate, to cause his own misery and demise. Devil and demon images, which sometimes is only a face or head, are not uncommon in general. As we all know, they have been used for centuries in the arts and folklore in many nations.

The name Cadwallader is more than likely based on "the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr". As to the pin, it makes sense to the story, but, it can also be just a little bit of power of suggestion when someone tells you what it looks like mixed with a little paradolia. There or other fairly clear pictures of Cadwallader and this pin that give it a totally different shape from other angles.

I believe the reason that the fortune telling machine had a devil's head on it to insinuate that it was one of his snares. William Shatner's character was starting to depend on it on how to run his life! Had it not been for his wife, he would've still been trapped there forever!
