Interesting! I did a cam swap in my 2013 Twin Cam and it made a huge difference. If I ever need to change lifters, I’ll know a lot more about it now. Thanks!

Great info!! I have a 2012 Road Glide that Im about to swap cams and have heard some use the Chevy SB lifters. On some of the HD forums there are guys that swear by them and others that say not to use them. The cams I got came with a set of new SB lifters so when I do the swap Ill just take the cups out of the factory lifters and put them in the SB and be done with it. Thanks!

Machine tool builders do the exact same thing. If you have to replace a relay or a solenoid valve and you buy it from them you will pay 2 to 4 times what it's worth. A lot of builders have the manufacturers put a different part # on the component so it's hard to cross-reference it. If you call the manufacturer and give them the part number, they'll tell you they can't sell it to you and they can't help you cross it over to a similar item. It's not as big of an issue today since you can find anything on the internet pretty easily but 20 years ago it was a lot harder.

Amen brother. And a lot of times it's 20 to 40 times what you can buy a generic part for. So years ago, Chevy parts department....Dist cap for a 69 Caprice 327.....$8.50. Cap for a Corvette 327/ 350hp......$28....Same cap different part number.

This video is great timing. I was researching different lifters the other day looking for small diameter ones for an ambitious project I'm planning. For some reason prior to that, I thought Harley lifters would be small, having never actually seen them before. I thought they looked a lot like they were taken from a SBC, further research said yes but minor differences. Thanks for the breakdown and explanation on these, I really enjoy your technical videos

Man you nailed it on being the bottom line is king to these companies. Excellent video! If someone made and sold those pushrod cups, they would do quite well. I'm sure Harley would be pissed though, LOL.

Some Polaris stuff uses Chevy lifters also. Makes sense to use a readily available part.

Back in the flat tappet days GM made Chevrolet small block hydraulic lifters of a different part number than stock that had the black cups in them. The engine building guys referred to them at the time as the "Taxi Cab" lifter. They worked very well! Maybe that mod on them too?

I have seen that with sunroof motors. An Explorer sunroof motor is right at $400 from the dealer. One of the retail chains sells them for about $220. It's the exact same motor. Even has the Ford sticker on it sometimes.

I looked around a lot and was suggested Chevy lifters for my 2005 Electra Glide Ultra Classic (88 engine), had a bad experience with my Buell XB from the same advice. I eventually spent the extra on Feuling lifters in my Harley. They were a huge amount more than Chevy lifters (like $10 vs $25 each), but should be proper oiling. With the info you just provided, I might be willing to swap internals with the less costly Chevy external. I still have the old stock lifters in a bag with oil, maybe I should gut them and store the parts for future.

If you say they moved the oil band I wonder if they moved the oil band to try and keep it in the pressure channel/oil galley longer so it'll oil the rockers. I've never been in a Harley engine like that to even know if there's an oil galley there but if they moved the band they did it for a reason. I e had to scratch small block Chevy brodix aluminum block small base circle deal to get them to oil a little move in my application made huge difference in oil with the same parts

Thanks, Daniel, i have heard this . I've been a Harley guy for years. Those aftermarket companies make much bigger flow oil pumps, too. I believe it's mostly the gears in the pump. I've got a 06 twin cam 88 cube motor, and i want to run a better cam. I like the 88 ci motor, but it needs head work and a little more duration for my style of riding. Have you ground any of the twin cam cams?

Harley is a high profit oriented company. If the CEO's and the white shirts were paid more fairly, R&D would have capital to actually make thieir own inroads but their plan has been adaptability vs research.
