I would love to see all of the cranking and trying to start it. That’s such a good noise! Please never edit out any cranking or starting of your cars! Carbureted first starts and cold starts are the best thing ever

I bought a 1980 sunbird off the showroom floor. It did not have an expanded metal grill. Nice upgrade. Thanks for the flashback. I haven’t seen any on the road in decades.

I was thinking that the sunbird was the one you went to cleetus and cars with a while back and it was hopefully you can get that new carb and play around with it more!

Failures are learning opportunities. The right ring gap, the right fuel to air (wideband) and enough cfm and things will last a lot longer. I'm positive that your on the right track. Season will be here before you know it. Good luck!

I made some comments on one of your older videos of this build. I don't know much about carburetors. my first good car was a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with a L67. I also had a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP that I modded extensively. the M90 supercharger works good. I sprayed a 50/50 water/methanol mixture through the blower for years and didn't ever have issues with the needle bearing. when you want to turn up the boost, you can get a modular hub and then run smaller pulleys or put a bigger crank pulley on. You might also consider installing an E85 carburetor from Mark Sullens because boost and ethanol are a great combo. I am in the process of putting a generation 5 M90 on my 1982 S-10 that has a 6.0 LQ4 with fuel injection.

Guy, love the project, but unless you increase the ring gap, you'll immediately knock the tops off the pistons again. You can't add additional heat and pressure from the superchargers to the combustion chamber without increasing the ring gap. The plenum you have from the carb to the blower inlets likely won't flow enough air to require a 1050 CFM carb; it's too narrow. The other issue you'll have with that plenum is that the air has to make an immediate 90-degree turn in a very small volume space, which will make the fuel separate from the air, pool, and run along the plenum floor at higher RPMs. The blower will put it back in suspension before it gets to the engine, but it will likely create some significant lean spots as you transition from vacuum to boost conditions, and the fuel has to work its way along the floor of that plenum. I'd suggest you rethink the placement of the carb and move it back over the blower inlets, giving it at least 2-4 inches of clearance underneath. If not, just increase the plenum height by the depth of your carb spacer; it's not like it will block your view any more than it already does. Good luck, I'm eager to see this thing actually run and make some actual power - it is a cool idea.

i didn't even know that was a method of engine failure
@camcutcnc Жыл бұрын
Hi, Cooolo project. Just my opinion. I havent heard you mention that you increased the piston ring gap ? I suspect that's a big part of the failure. Cool deal you have there !!

We did gap the rings for boost in the engine that came out of the car. that's actually a really nice bottom end, forged crank and Eagle H beams. Pistons were wiscow blower pistions. The stock Vortec engine that i just put back in however, i figure with almost 200K on it, i wont bother with ring gap, lol. Just way to lean in the high R's....
@camcutcnc Жыл бұрын
You asked so I will share my opinion. I think first and foremost that you need to Increase your piston ring gap. Secondly I would change the blower pulleys to speed up the blowers and not rev the engine so much. This will give the same boost at a lower RPM. Older nitro funny cars like in the 1980's only ran around 5,000 RPM while going 240 mph in the 1/4 mile. They weren't running mega blowers back then. The engines had good balance and weren't bombacious . Everything with the superchargers will be happier if you stay around that RPM and change the pulleys to get the boost that you want. I don't think that you need a dominator. A Holley 850 is fine. Your need for fuel increases with load. If you could hook up like a pro stock car then you need fuel for that load. If not less fuel is required for lower loads. I think your piston failures were related to the piston rings not having room to expand. Hope it helps !

^ great stuff. Generally I’ve seen boost reference fuel regulators being used when running forced induction.
@JeffreyPerrault-hk6xe Жыл бұрын
The piston failures were mostly because of ring end gap.. however it also does look like it was running very lean which is curious cuz you are running a pull through fuel system.if it was running boost with a blow through carb then the lean condition could be easier to explain.I'm also curious where your timing is at.With boost you also need to pull more and more out of it with each increase in boost level.

Widebands are really cheap man. Carb guys seem too hate em for some reason, but they work. Glad it looks fixable, i look forward tooo seeing what you do with this thing in the future
@rottersgarage Жыл бұрын
I have an AEM wideband in the car. But the Oxygen sensor took a dump right before we went to Cleetus and cars and i had no way of getting a replacement in time. I do have a brand new one in the front seat now for when spring rolls around. I also had a small 9 inch by 1 1/2" air cleaner element in the scoop when i first built it, then swapped it out with a screen before the burnout competition. I didn't mention that in the video, but i think replacing the element with a screen was the major reason for going so face of the sun lean. The element was basically like a cork in the intake.....

@rottersgarage ahhhhh yeah i bet your right. Blowers love HUGE free flowing intakes.

I love the combination! One small hint, please swap the position of the idler and the tensioner of the belt, left to right and right to left. Currently the belt gets “untensioned” when you hit the throttle. The crankshaft pulley pulls on the belt clockwise to spin the superchargers und pushing the tensioner pulley away, reducing the tension on the belt. Of you look at all the other superchargers on the market you will see that the tensioner is always on the left (looking from the front). It’s there for that reason. Good luck getting it running perfectly 👍👍👍 Make sure you get the timing correct, maybe limit it or locking it or reverse the vacuum advance (Tony Angelo did this with his Sicklone on the turbo set-up). Or get a MSD ignition retard box. Please also add ring gap on the piston rings, just file that suckers open and put them back in. I’m running a 350 Olds with a GT45 eBay turbo on 17 pounds of boost. Runs just fine but, as mentioned, check the timing retard-ring gap and afr. Have fun!!! Edit, I just watched your earlier videos and there you already mentioned the tensioner issue 👍
@ZachWilliams-ny2yq6 ай бұрын
Don't forget when you are supercharger(or turbo) you need to have a lower target AFR under boost, anywhere between 11:1 to 11:8 The 14.7 you used in your calculations is needs to be your target AFR under maximum hp/load/psi. If you run 14.7 under boost you better have some great detonation/knock deterrence (water/meth inj, higher oct or E85) or sacrificed timing to keep the engine in one piece. This is further pushed on M90's because of the high temperature discharge from the supercharger and leaves less room for error compared to intercooled turbo setups. Do you have a system retarding the timing as boost pressure increases?

Put three 2 barrels on it, run them side ways between the inlets, with a progressive linkage sonit runs and drives on the middle carb and wot the side carbs open, the twin supers should pull a big signal to the carbs so i think it could take more than it should need....

I had previously said i might fuel inject this thing, i even set up the fuel cell when i made it a couple years ago with the proper fittings. But if i did it i would put injectors in the ports, run a throttle body with the 4150 flange on the current intake, and run a Terminator.... I've see a couple of 1050's out there for around $600..... Be a lot less work and cheaper to bolt the 1050 on, but i wouldn't rule out EFI.....
