Lathe tip: at 6:02 in the video your round stock is sticking out too far from the chuck to get a good surface. You have to either move the round stock in closer to the chuck or pilot hole drill the face of the piece and support it with the live center in the tailstock. Theres too much deflection with the material that far out of the chuck.

You can't run two engines tied to one jackshaft directly. One engine will be fighting the other all the time unless you can get them synced together perfectly. Right now if one engine is running at 3600 rpms and the other is running at 3500 you will continue to break parts like the master chain links, shear keys, etc. To run two engines like that each should have a clutch which will allow the one to slip a little.

Word of advise. When turning longer pieces of metal, it's best to use a center in your tailstock. It will minimize deflection from the cutting tool. Without a center, especially on smaller diameter materials the material will push away from the cutter. You will end up with a taper or get chatter without a center.

Not only will the motors vibrate but the "transmission" you built is going to vibrate a lot. By cutting the rod and piston off that's going to throw it off bad. It's balanced to have both. And if it has a counter balance weight that's even more rotating mass. But its definitely a interesting build. Can't wait to see it dialed in.
@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic6542
@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic6542 Жыл бұрын
The best solution would be to pull the crank entirely out and put just a shaft through there, but that might not be remotely easy. Another way would be to pull off all of the central crank, pin and throw parts, and bridge the 2 ends [one with the spline and one with the transmission gear] with one heavy piece of tube slipped over it. Then take that, put it in the lathe to clean off as much imperfection as possible, then put it on a set of balance pins and grind or tack just enough weight to get it to neutral balance.
@NVMDSTEvil
@NVMDSTEvil Жыл бұрын
"trans" vibrations probably arent too much of an issue. Engines being out of phase I believe is the largest issue.. and the keys falling out. Hose clamps work wonders with the keys i've found, often have issues with them falling out in swing-augers on farm.
@rushking19
@rushking19 Жыл бұрын
@@NVMDSTEvil the trans vibrations is an major issue. That's one of the reasons the last set up vibrated so bad . You have an crank that is out of balance being driven so yes it will be an issue that along with the engines not being in sync, being two different displacements and having different hp's and having a clutch just adds to the vibration more .
@ralphhondaman
@ralphhondaman Жыл бұрын
@rushking19 that was my thoughts exactly. It's all balanced for a reason. But now by removing the connecting rod and piston then turning the engine at thousands of rpm. Something will give at some point.

Dual engines could be a big advantage for trail riding or for younger drivers. Where each engine connects to the first jack-shaft, if you could make something that would work similar to a pull start that only allows force in one direction, and free-wheels in the other, you would gain at least 2 improvements. The first would be that you could start the engines individually without overloading the pull start, and second, if 1 engine were to die out on the trail, the sprocket of the dead engine could free-wheel and the running engine would not have to drive the load of turning over the 2nd engine. That would allow you to still operate on only 1 engine and hopefully not leave you stranded. You'd also have the option of operating on either 1 of the engines at any given time, limiting power, say when a young driver was at the wheel.
@YardworkWithJohn
@YardworkWithJohn Жыл бұрын
OK here's my idea for how to deal with starting a two-engine kart: Have the right engine connect to the jackshaft normally with a normal pull cord. Left engine will have no pull cord, It will connect to the jackshaft but with a clutch you'd control with a lever. With the lever down, Left engine would be disengaged. Push it up and it would connect the clutch and now left engine is connected. So to start, you'd put the lever into "disconnect", start the right engine. Once it's warmed up, slowly push the clutch lever up so that the right engine starts rotating the left engine. Lock that lever down and now you have two running motors!

The 360 will also be the simplest as far as the single turbo setup, or just plain timing it for proper scavenging or a single carburetor setup in NA mode. >Use ORANGE Loctite instead of blue or red. It's stronger than blue and made for vibrations, but can still be removed without heat. I have the orange stuff on my truck's driveshaft for over a year with zero issues. It's the offbrand stuff at advanced, though.

That Opel GT you have on the lift brings back good memories...it was my first car in 76' . The chasis is better than most people think ( don't change it ) . The motor is good and faster than any MG or Fiat . One flaw is the stock carburetor..It's junk ( go with a Weber ) . The transmission is okay unless you are a gearhead 16 year old like I was . Replace the rear exhaust pod . With the rubber hangers it's noisy and will break ..with a solid mount it will crack the exhaust and make tractor noises . I put my 73' through hell ( I was16 ) and ran a damn good race against a 280Z in the twisties . But he pulled me on the straight at the end . Buuuuut ...I caught back up when I pitched sideways on gradual left turn ( used a little inside gravel and drifted into the right lane in 4th gear ) yeehaaa! Then lifted all four wheels over a slightly lifted concrete bridge . Now ...here is what stumps me . I ( Dave ) was smiling ear to ear . The guy in the 280Z seemed a little preturbed and squeeled away !?? Then my friend Ray was yelling at me in an octave that made my ears hurt while trying to pull his fingers out of the dashboard! Huh...go figure , I had a great time... This was at a beautiful piece of twisty blacktop we called Sleepy Hollow outside of Louisville Kentucky. Good times..good times . PK

Lathe tips: never use a file without a handle, always push sandpaper into the part/don't pull sandpaper (if it grabs you'll smash your thunb), 2x distance equals the square root of rigidity, make sure you have an estop near the operator, sfpm for cutting cold roll steel with toolsteel is about 100-120 sfpm. You calculate rpm from sfpm. Chip load should he 2-4 thousands per revolution on an old lathe. Larger nose radius will give you a better surface finish. Increase your relief angle as the material gets harder.

Wait a bit longer or try to find a motor thats suits your powersupply I agree with the remarks about the material in the chuck. You can do a industrial hydraulic drive between both engines and actually make more hp. I did it with two 3.5 Briggs flathead engines years ago. When one is one TDC of compression stroke the other needs to be on exhaust. The pause traction yard cart I had the setup on would fry the original yard tires off. I could only imagine what these two would do if they were in sync with each other. My setup was with a single 8 hp updraft carb and two exhaust. I also used aluminum flywheels because between the two there's no need of the extra weight to carry the engines to the compression stroke. It would rev to 9,000 rpm in seconds. I also used heavy springs and home ground cams, along with match and flow porting and valve replacements from a 4 hp bb. It was fun though. I was 15 at the time and had endless supplies of engines and my dad's machine shop, being I opened my small engine shop at 12. I'm old and broke now but would love to do two of these newer ohv engines like that.

What’s happening is the engines have their own spikes and drops in rpm in a single revolution. this is transferred through the jack shaft as a back and forth load. When this same Principle was used but with less parts like the multi engine mini bikes there was less to break and it lasted what yall put it through. This has more stuff to break between the engines and isn’t suited to the constant differing loads. Possible syncing the engines might help this but won’t solve the issue completely as there will still be random differences in torque between the engines. This is why multi cylinder engines share a big chunk of metal (crankshaft) cause that piece transferring loads needs to be very strong.

Just to hopefully remove the idle shake issue, I'd put cheap clutches on the engines to get them to have some give between them and the transmission, or to make it simple, use only one engine so the jackshaft isn't constantly fighting itself. I agree the two engine design is cool, but the twin engine is always going to be fighting itself unless there's some give between the two

You need centrifugal clutches on the engines so they can run independently. They have different power and rpm's. Right now they are fighting each other.

Centrifugal clutches wouldn’t change anything past the engagement speed. What they need is something like a viscous coupler, or a coupler like what is used to connect hydraulic pumps to motors. Or do things the smart way and use one damn engine.

Wrap your sprockets where the set screws keep coming out with electrical tape. Use a small drill (where the set screw hits the shaft) using the hole of the set screw as a pilot for drill, drill slightly into shaft allowing the tip of set screw fit into recess your drill made in shaft.

the next project should be a kart you can use for filming your builds driving around that has crazy good suspension and is made for filming from, is quiet, and can tow any broke down vehicles.

The piece of 2x4 hits close to home haha, the 670 in my boat is mounted on a piece of pressure treated 2x6, hasn’t failed me yet 👍🏼

I would suggest putting centrifugal/over-running clutches on both engines so if one engine is down a little, the other isn't being drug down with it. Also easier starting and less wear and tear on the rest of the equipment.

Definitely want to see more out of the dolly trailer. Mini bike as mentioned or put a wide front,a body of some sort and a 670 on for a mini monster truck or drag car
