Let's take a look at one of the best characters of Twin Peaks the incredible Shelly Johnson! This video ended up being MUCH longer than I had planned because I decided to talk about Season 3 as well. Adding in some stuff about Becky Burnett, Shelly's Daughter.

At first I was like “why is Shelly STILL a waitress, 25 years on?” But the RR diner and Norma is like home and family to her, so I think she has a sense of loyalty to the place. She thrives there, no matter what’s going on in her life.

oh and when i've watched it, i've always seen Shelly as slightly older than Laura and Bobby. Like just 2 or 3 and that would still have placed her in school with them, even when she left as a Junior. And when you are that age, a few years is like a lifetime older. Maybe that's why people wouldn't like it. It wasn't the gap, just that the gap was when the gap happens. I mean like a 25 and a 35 not such a big deal. Hope that makes sense.

Mike I love your consistently thoughtful, articulate videos. Have you read “The Final Dossier”? Bobby and Shelly were apparently lovebirds since grade school, and, if I remember correctly, circumstances were described therein that lead to Bobby winding up with Laura, and, consequently, Shelly with Leo.

I really enjoyed watching your break down of Shelly! Great job, but I would like to point out a comment you made on Shelly's relationship situations. A woman doesn't 'put' herself in these abusive relationship by the person she dates. No way is it her fault because it shouldn't be happening in the first place

Actually, in abusive relationships like these, both parties are at fault. Let's be honest, in real life, how many girls/women would choose these bad boys over men that would love them and treat them right? I would say almost of them would choose the bad boys over the good guys ( you know the saying: good guys finish last ), because they find these bad boys' bad, rough, even criminal behaviors sexy and fun, and they think these good guys are boring and even weak. The problem is, these females want the danger and excitement of bad boys, yet expect the bad boys to love them and treat them right like the good guys would and not abuse them. That's not going to happen. You can't have your cake and eat it too. In life, everything is a tradeoff. You give up something to get something else. So yes, a girl/woman does 'put' herself in these eventual abusive relationships by choosing to be with these bad boys.

@ no, people (men, women or other) don't usually put themselves in abusive relationships by choice. The phrase "good guys finish last" is actually more of a joke generally created by men who have been unlucky in the relationship area. In order to complain they call themselves a "nice guy", but actually their actions are usually disrespectful or have sinister intentions, and they have no intentions of introspection. Don't be one of those guys.

She is a beautiful and great actress. Twin Peaks was a great show and way ahead of it's time. I was in College back then, I would come home and watch it and Knots Landing with my Mom. That was a night I was not at a Frat. 🥳 Party 🤣

The ‚cool James’ stuff doesn’t seem weird to me. It’s a small town, where everybody knows each other and James is Norma’s sweetheart Ed’s nepphew. This is part of Twin Peaks’ magic - it is a world not just a movie

Always wondered what a review of Shelly would be like if done by a woke person, insistent on using todays nonsensical jargon about abuse, "because of this" "because of that" with everyone now pretending to be a psychologist, who never saw these shows when they came out, never having to wait a week in between each episode to see what was next. James was one of the cringiest characters ever created. He was just awful. And I couldn't really see him as the romantic lead for any of the girls. And Donna was boring. I never enjoyed any of their scenes.
