One implication I felt here was... Well, cancer seems to be playing an important thematic role in this series. Harry Truman has it, Beverly's husband has it, and Jacobi was talking about it on his vlog (particularly how cancer comes from contamination in food). So, what I saw with the singed people, and especially the woodsman, is that they're symbolic of radiation. They kill some people instantly, and the woodsman spreads sleep over the airwaves. He keeps talking about water and the well (a reference to radiation in the water), and also "the dark within," (which can be taken as a reference to cancer). I took the creature crawling into the girl's mouth at the end as a direct reference to cancer caused by contamination (although if she's been possessed by a spirit, it could still be symbolic). There's also a visual link between the product of the bomb (which was called an experiment), and the experiment gushing out garmonbozia; it kind of felt like the latter was an otherworldly reaction to the former. So with that link between the bomb and the evil spirits... We have a lot of doppelgangers in Twin Peaks, which is like duplication. And cancer is uncontrolled cell growth, which is another kind of duplication. I feel like there's a link there. My impressions come from visual cues, but Lynch does work that way a lot. Like the thing with the cube? That totally feels like it has something to do with TV, and I'm almost certain that was intentional. As for how I feel about it... I don't really like it, not for Twin Peaks. I mean, there are some interesting ideas at play, but I liked the smaller scale of the original series. It felt more grounded in reality, and... I liked the feeling of normal people being caught up in extraordinary circumstances that they couldn't understand or control. If we're getting into this idea that real evil is caused by humanity, then that idea that there are powerful natural forces that influence us is lost. I mean, there was definitely a link between the spirits from the Black Lodge, and our own animal natures, but that just made it scarier-- we can't escape that is within us. And If Laura Palmer (or her double) is some kind of cosmic entity meant to fight evil, then... She's no longer just a normal girl but some kind of savior. I mean, Fire Walk With Me did kind of imply that she sacrificed herself to stop evil from spreading to others, but that was based on a decision she made, not some kind of destiny. I dunno, maybe it would work somewhere else... In fact, the whole thing with the bomb reminds me of the Lich in Adventure Time, which I actually do like. Here, though, it feels like it clashes with the themes from the original series, which... You know, it's funny, though this season is definitely weirder and on a grander scale, it feels more mundane to me. I think part of the charm of the original is that there is so much that's unseen and unexplained, and when you get into these kinds of origins, no matter how trippy it gets, some of that mystery is lost. It's definitely not nostalgia that makes me feel this way, either, because I watched the original for the first time over the past couple of months.

My thoughts on the woodsman’s cryptic poem. First description is the general form while the second is this instance: "This is the water, this is the well, drink full and descend; the horse is the white of the eyes and dark within" - the woodsman, twin peaks This is the water (the invader seeking a host)(the locustfrog) And this is the well (the host)(the girl) Drink full (a command to the host: accept the invader completely)(open your mouth...) And descend (the invader descends into the depths of the host) (and swallow the locustfrog) The horse is the white of the eyes (what’s left of the host is only the shell of their soul - their direction is bent to the will of the parasite to whom the host is a vehicle)(the girl is to become a horse for a locustbug) And dark within (the invader is a dark entity)(locustbug is evil so now is the girl, except for the white of her eyes which is all that's left of her - a fate deserving of a pale horse foreshadow or maybe just a whinny after the deed)

Very good insight! After swallowing the bug thing, girl becomes a Trojan horse, carrying evil ("dark within"), but from the outside she looks like a normal girl. Besides, I think that every person, who fell asleep listening to this poem, swallowed a similar bug thing while sleeping, 'cause there were more of the eggs in the desert.

Observation: The Arm refers to Laura Palmer as his cousin in the original run. This makes sense now as "Mother" (The Experiment) creates Bob (and probably MIKE and his Arm) and the Giant creates (sets in motion) Laura. Which alludes to Mother and the Giant being equals in both lodges/siblings/doppelgangers of each other.

I noticed that the woodsman was able to speak much more clearly (without the hard electrical distortion of "gotta light?") when he holds the radio guy by the head, that might be the reason why he was kept alive during the chant/spell performance.

So much to dissect in this episode but here are some top suspicions and possible Easter Eggs: 1) I still maintaining the feeling that the 1956 girl is Sarah Palmer. That would make her about 11 in that scene which is believable. The bug that she ingests is the reason for her visions later on in life and having the white horse both mentioned by the woodsman on the radio and seen in her visions would make sense. 2) Dougie Coop, I believe, is still in an alternate world. The drugged out mother keeps screaming out 119, possibly as the reverse of 911, in the sense that Coop needs help. It would also make sense since Coop didn't go through the curtain that showed where Bob Coop was driving his car but rather in the opposite direction. 3) This is a far fetched Easter Egg but we have encountered three coins so far: a QUARTER for the slot machine, a DIME that Red flips and a PENNY that the girl finds. If you rearrange the numbers it reads out 51,201: the population of Twin Peaks. 4) I'm sure someone has pointed it out already, but the bug head on the ace of spades, if sharpened is essentially the logo for The Black Lodge. 5) Another possible Easter Egg is that the sign in the 1956 diner reads: Pop's Diner, the same name and font used for the diner in Riverdale, which also stars Mädchen Amick. Nice little tie-in as her character Shelly is of course a waitress on Twin Peaks. Still going over that last episode and kind of relieved that we have an extra week to process it all.

Âme Solitaire agreed, after much thought it does seem that the egg is BOB given that it looks like what came out of mother, though several things don't sit well with me. If what comes out of mother/experiment is evil, why does Bob's Egg look different than the others and if it is BOB, than why do the woodsmen all appear fully formed (I'm assuming they are the other spewed out eggs or perhaps the disembodied lost souls that died in the detonation) and BOB just hatches at that moment all those years later. The only other thing I could discern from the two kids is perhaps PERHAPS the boy is Hawk and this is his connection to all of it? Sarah Palmer makes sense to me but perhaps the girl just represents the origin of the loss of innocence that all this began. Really can't wait for the next episode. Thank you for your feedback on my post! 👍🍩☕️

If you look carefully, the Woodsman's voice makes the people on the road and the two radio workers "freeze." Also, the Woodsmen ghosts that remove the Bob orb from Mr. C seem to have been killed in the fire at the convenience store in the flashback and they are already dead when that one Woodsman goes around asking for a light.

Originally, I thought the beetle was Bob as well; however, the timeline establishes that Leland Palmer was born in 1944, and was tormented by Bob at his grandmother's cabin as a little boy. By 1956, he would already be 17. Instead, it seems more likely that the egg in 1956 is one of the various oval-shapes/eggs that are spewed out *along with* Bob in the abyss-mother's vomit stream in 1945. I don't know who the bug grows up to be, but I do think the 1956 sequence is more of a look into the life-cycle of Black Lodge entities, rather than specifically Bob's origin. One thing worth noting, though, is that the bug has a long, pointed beak/nose, similar to the appearance of both the "Jumping Man" spirit and the mask worn by Mrs. Tremond's grandson.

Something of interest, probably an easter egg, about the guy who announced "The" Nine Inch Nails: He looked quite a bit like the late Jimmy Scott, who sang "Sycamore Trees" in the Black Lodge during the original series finale. I've seen it suggested that the NIN performance was meant to make explicit the idea that the Black Lodge was overlapping with Twin Peaks once again. I don't know what I think of that, but the Jimmy Scott lookalike is as much a clue as we're likely ever to get.

'Pale Horse' in biblical scripture is the horse rode by Death in an apocalypse (the end for the characters killed), in which he kills during the event. Notice the woodsman we first saw in the cell, the whites of his eyes; very prominent. His pupils and Character is 'dark within', hence bearing death to those in contact. The woodsman emerges from the explosion test, in correlation: J.Robert O' quotes "now I am become death". Death had come, and rides off on 'Pale Horse' as the episode ends.

I loved the Nuclear explosion/Penderecki scene as well, but there is more accomplished here than our hosts acknowledge. The footage of the nuclear test explosion was just declassified and released in January, I believe. To superimpose these images over the complete musical piece of Penderecki "Threnody for Hiroshima" represents a milestone in American television. It's the post-modern moment! Post modern music and art is finally acceptable in its entirety on American television. An amazing accomplishment. Look how far we've come as an audience in a few short episodes. Think of all the groundwork that was necessary to prepare the audience for eight minutes of Penderecki.

I love the musical aspect of Twin Peaks. Instead of exploiting music by ripping it into tiny pieces, Lynch presents it whole. It takes time and practice to listen to music. It takes practice to watch good theater or to appreciate any of the fine arts. Twin Peaks works by demanding more of its audience than any show in the history of TV.

An idea, and a question or 2: how prominent is the divine in Lynch's work or ideas? The giant and all the gears brought up the question of God in all of this (gears = deus ex machina). That would fit in some way with the creature (the metaphor of different hybrid creatures of the Revelation to John comes to mind). And of course the 4 horseman of the Apocalypse, with the rider on the pale horse... And in a different context the horseman on the white horse. Then there is the water (whoever is thirsty, come to me...). The well, where the Samaritan woman was asked for water. I cannot put it into a sensible, logical whole yet, but this series will keep us busy for many years, trying to understand it.

Wondetful vid. I have thought and read deeply about TP S3, so much of this was explored territory for me, but you guys summarized and verbalized it beautifully. Beyond that, I had completely forgotten about Douglas Milford. I also completely missed The Experiment vs. Señorita Dido as competing mother figures! Thanks do much for sharing your thoughts!

This mouth-head figure is seen in a lot of Lynches artwork. He paints and makes art installations, where you'll always find a scary looking hairless eyeless noseless head with a big mouth vomiting stuff. If I could attach a photo from the exhibition I went to, I would show what I mean.

I think you guys grasped more about this episode than any other recap/analysis show I've been following. The purple sea, which I think is the astral sea; the castle which is probably The White Lodge; the garmonbozia spewed from the creature that was in the glass box (which may also be Mother)--you guys seem to have a good grasp on it all. If you look at all the weirdness in dream-logic or symbolic terms, I think you're right--it's pretty clear. But none of the other KZbin recap shows I've watched have gotten it. So bravo! *golf clap* (A side note: I really felt the woman in the White Lodge who kissed the golden orb has costume and makeup reminiscent of old silent films. I don't know what significance that has in terms of mythology, but it was cool.) I agree with you that the bug-frog is the larval form of Bob. One last thing--in episode 7, the terrified guy that Andy was talking to about the murder truck looked EXACTLY like the ashy Woodsman guy that disappeared in the jail cell earlier in the show. Might just be the same actor, but it might mean something.

In Beyond Life and Death, the last episode of Twin Peaks season 2, just after Windon Earle kills Cooper, time goes back and we see an explosion reminiscent of what happened in Part 8, before BOB tells Cooper that Windom was wrong, and that he couldn't take his soul. Also, the MC made me think of the Red Room singer from that same episode, but maybe the Mullhoand Drive connection makes more sense.

The second time Cooper meets the Giant in the original run of the show, the Giant says "You forgot something..." He lifts his hand and puts the golden orb into Cooper through his mouth just like the moth/frog (Bob) and the little girl. I feel this has been an ongoing cycle of possession and the face of Laura Palmer shows that the events of Laura Palmers death are the events that will lead to Bob's demise.

In this video, Ryan Schubert seems really nonplussed by the flashback, especially the part that takes place in the massive fortress on the island. My Theory: There's some universal power of good (The White Lodge) and an opposite power of evil (The Black Lodge). Both are largely separated from our real world, where people are a bit of both good and bad. Then the nuclear testing in the desert tore the barrier somewhat, and let Bob into the world from The Black Lodge. He inhabited Mr. Robertson, who lived next door to a lake cabin that Leland Palmer visited as a child. Then later he lived in Leland Palmer himself before getting passed into Agent Cooper's doppelgaenger. (BTW, referring to him as "Bob Cooper" is simple genius.) Right after the nuclear test, alarms go off in The White Lodge, alerting Mr. Holm (or whatever the giant is called) about The Black Lodge's incursion into the "real" world. So he creates an equal spirit of good in that golden ball and sends it into the world. It travels differently, so it doesn't arrive until two generations later, where it is born into Leland Palmer's daughter Laura.

This entire episode had call-outs to other David Lynch projects. The Mullholland Drive theater scenes as outlined in the video. The Lost Highway like shots when Mr. C and Ray are driving. The overall industrial/surreal Eraserhead feel of the "white lodge" scenes - including the "experiment" throwing up (a la the conception). The Woodsman character using "the Voice" to influence those in earshot like Jessica Atreides in Dune (not to mention he comes out of the desert). As a David Lynch fan I loved this episode.

Log Lady's husband would be as old as the hill's if he is the "Gotta light" woodsman. He's an old man in 1945 and The Log Lady would probably not be very old, if even born, in 1945.

I feel like the reason "Mr. C" says "You're still with me. *Good* " is because somewhere inside of him is a Good Coop not wanting Bob anywhere else, because maybe the Good Coop inside thinks he can control Bob a bit better than anyone else, so a part of him feels like he's saving some people by keeping Bob inside of him. He doesn't want Bob to leave him because he wants to make sure he knows what Bob is up to. That's my thought on that. I'm probably wrong, but that's just one of my crazy theories.
