Business people may say regulation kills jobs, but lack of regulation kills lives.
@Leonnie133 жыл бұрын
They need to find a good balance. Heaping tons of nonsense regulations is similar to having no regulations. Examples are when government adds regulations that exist for the sole purpose of providing overpriced jobs to friends and family and businesses willing to line corrupt political pockets. Most politicians have little to no experience in implementing anything. Nor do their family and friends. That is why the DMV, the IRS, etc. can be hard to comply with... their projects are also typically far more expensive and take 10x the estimated time to complete for substandard results. To get contractors in line the government needs to be severe in punishment if crap like this happens.

I know some of you on here can get testy and sensitive very easily so let me start off by saying that this isn't directed to anyone in particular. This is just a simple post, in general, based on some comments I've read. First, what we have here in South (and Southwest) Florida is called the Florida Everglades, NOT the swamp... and it should be respected AND protected. The Everglades is an important part of the ecosystem and was home to hundreds of Native Americans and wildlife wayyyy before greedy men came here and tried to profit off of the land by building on an area that isn't suitable for commercial activity... So that I agree with completely. Second, Miami Beach (which is where this occurred) is NOT the Everglades, they're two completely different areas. Miami Beach is on the Atlantic side of Florida (as apposed to the Gulf Coast) and there's a BIG clue in the name to what type of area it is. Give up?.. "BEACH". This is on the beach. Not anywhere near the Everglades. Another area where we shouldn't be trying to habitate because we're at sea level and Florida is full of sink holes. Those are just facts. Now, if I lead with emotion, I must say that some of you on here are very rude to others and I don't know why you don't invest your energy into helping those affected by this or being a positive and considerate human. Damn trolls. :)

That lone picture was not overly concerning as that concrete looked like it was added over the existing, perhaps to cover and protect the electrical outlet from damage. When we pour structural columns they are poured monolithically, which means the whole corner would have blown out, not just a one side of the corner. Problem is that I cannot tell if that cover was poured over just for the electrical or because there was damage to what is behind it but I haven't seen structural repairs done that way if it was that. Not much use in speculating without a complete set of structural drawing and specs, although with some detailed and well lit photos we could at least get a bit of knowledge.

What the city needs to do is find out who built that building 40 years ago. Then, find and inspect every other building that those builders made in order to see if they are all structurally sound. My hypothesis is that the builders cut corners to save some money during the build. If that ends up being the case, everything else they've built over the years is now suspect as well.

"Hopefully reinforced" and "done right" - invisible qualities. Yes, I'm sure they are reinforced but to the naked eye just how well it is done is an unknown. It's the feeling I get when I see them I'm referring to; I get uncomfortable no matter what reassurances they are safe. It's a gut issue, not an intellectual one. I had friends and acquaintances close to the building processes when I lived in the vicinity of NYCity. What goes on to get permits and how the inspectors function with the temptations of graft is a swirl of energy that makes your stomach ache if you're centered around being scrupulous in your endeavors. It's pretty raw. So much of it about "the cost of doing business" and all the pit falls of that. I'd be way more comfortable if there was a triangulated beam, even a small one, at the sides to help support these slabs. These buildings give me the 'willies' considering they're so near the ocean. Captive beams in concrete would need some thorough consideration of their longevity, they'd deteriorate if not well protected.

I would have been out of that "sister building" days ago. Just look at the damage in the garage area! Crazy to remain there waiting for an evacuation order. Hard to sleep at night for those people still in the sister building. Yes, enforce those codes and investigate. I read an engineer said there was likely some structural damage stemming from the pool area. He said it years ago and no action was taken. I guess a raise in HOA dues was needed to accomplish that and perhaps the condo owners there were not ready for such an increase. Now, I don't even know if this was ever discussed in one of their meetings, but it should have been brought to their attention. I love residential high rise buildings with a sea view, but the codes need to be enforced to the max. Make sure no one is bribed and build well. They should bring down the entire twin building.

Easy for you to say. In reality that building is the collective home of many owners. It represents their investment and mortgages like home owners anywhere. They couldn't unload it now for any price.

@@skliros9235 The Twin Towers fell in NYC. It didn't make every building around it unsafe and have to be taken down. They need to be inspected, they MAY or MAY NOT be good. 3 yrs ago inspectors found problems,the city is as guilty of neglect as are the contractors,and owners. I bet the owner got a copy of the inspectors finding and lt went in the desk drawer. City didn't follow up inspector didn't follow up on it owner stayed quiet, thought it would be forgotten and all would be well. The families of these people will sue and probably end up with nothing.

If I lived anywhere near there, I would abandon my home, take my cat/dog/ ferrets, whatever, quit my job and move in with my family somewhere far away from there. I would restart my life somewhere else. Life is too short to wait until the inspections are complete. It is too risky.

the last building to come down, the pillars in the lower areas like the car park gave way, you can see it roll to the side before collapsing but the upper stories were still intact, they may need to investigate soil erosion which may have caused extra stress on the lower pillars, also it could be age and time and if over that time extra weight added which could have overstressed the pillars like new lifts and ac units or motors on the roof. they showed a pillar that is cracked away if thats from the other building, thats a very bad sign

Seas level rise. It's happening all over south Florida & all coastal areas. While this is a huge tragedy it should not be a surprise. Most of these buildings are steel-reinforced concrete- to meet hurricane building codes. Unfortunately, the rebar can degrade from saltwater exposure- unless waterproofed. The buildings built in the 80's had different standards.
@russlehman20703 жыл бұрын
It's too soon to be certain that it wasn't a sinkhole or some other failure in the ground below the building, but I would bet that it is the structure itself that failed, due to water penetration, corroding rebar and spalling concrete. I would also not be a bit surprised if it turns out the concrete was not up to specifications also.

The surveillance video that was given to the public starts AFTER the building had already begun to fall. Why was it edited? What was at the beginning of the video? Were there flashes and lights? Detonations? Who edited the video? Where is the unedited video? People said they heard a bomb.
@annafdd3 жыл бұрын
A bomb is not enough to bring that much building down. The Alfred Murray building was gutted, but stayed up.
@elle50313 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I pray that everyone gather pets and important papers...and get the hell out until all buildings in the area are checked...and help people in every way to get relocated. Florida needs to ask for emergency money if it has not already been given.
