I've done that same exact thing on my Audi. Pretty similar location for the oil pressure sending unit. Forgot to install one because I was so excited to fire it up for the first time with the single turbo conversion and 3.2 stroker I completely spaced it. Just swapped the long block on a boat engine and spun the oil pump up with a drill and shaft (GM4.3) first to get oil pressure throughout the engine and up to the lifters before cranking the engine. Gauge even showed about 50 psi with the drill. On a freshly built engine, even with assembly lube you might want to at least crank it with no fueling/ignition and plugs out to get an oil pressure reading first before full send. Your bearings will thank you.
