STRYPER stands for Salvation Through Redemption Yielding Peace, Encouragement and Righteousness -- based on Isaiah 53:5 -- "But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed."

Robert Sweet is one of the two greatest drummers in the history of popular music (the other being Max Weinberg) and yes, the difference between them is that Sweet uses one of the largest drum kits you'll ever see; Weinberg's kit has four drums. Michael Sweet's voice is special. Anything off Soldiers Under Command, To Hell With the Devil, or In God We Trust is worthy of reaction. ☺

Of classic Stryper I think the next one on the list would be "Soldiers Under Command (Official Video) (1985) Remastered HQ Audio" . It's was a pivotal song for them that took them from playing at clubs on the Hollywood strip to going platinum and touring the world. They had plenty of solid hits after that as well, but Soldiers helped lay the basis for what came later.

I skipped school (9th grade), told my Mom I was spending the night with a friend who offered me a free ticket to my first ever concert (never heard of Stryper before that day). I was blown away, my first act of rebellion, my first guilty pleasure memory. I never imagined I’d hear a rock band preaching to me that night. By the end of the concert, our parents were outside waiting for us, angry and disappointed. After a lecture the next day, and realizing the music was Christian rock, all was forgiven and a lesson learned. Had I gone to a Metallica or Motley Crue concert instead, I would have been grounded with no allowance for a lot longer. 😂

I've seen a few of your reactions and decided to subscribe after seeing Stryper on your channel. They are very unique and they love God. I got hung up on them when MTV used to play their videos back in the day. They have a large library of great music. A lot of them mentioned in the comments. To Hell With The Devil, Honestly, In God We Trust, and many more. You have reacted to Firehouse, and the bass guitarist, Perry Richardson is now playing bass for Stryper. I have Stryper memorabilia on my wall. My favorite thing is a used, splintered up drumstick from and signed by Robert Sweet. He is a outstanding drummer, very under rated.

*Whether you're a Christian or not, Stryper is a good band , and a good band to see in concert. I saw them in concert in 2009, in San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas. They were small venues, which is cool. I was one guy deep from the stage, so I was able to see Michael Sweet's guitar solo up close.* *The name comes from the stripes from Jesus being whipped. They came up with an acronym for the name, too.* *Y'all should hear:* *Stryper - In God We Trust* *Stryper - Against The Law* *Barren Cross - Here I Am*

2024 will mark the 40th anniversary of their debut album The Yellow And Black Attack. They're still going strong making great music and sounding phenomenal live. Singer Michael Sweet has put out great solo albums, he's also recorded 3 albums as Sweet-Lynch with Dokken / Lynch Mob guitarist George Lynch, 1 album with L.A Guns guitarist Tracii Guns as Sunbomb. Guitarist Oz Fox & bassist Tim Gaines released an album as Sin Dizzy with Oz on vocals and guitar. Drummer Robert Sweet and bassist Tim Gaines also recorded with Whitecross guitarist Rex Caroll in King James. Robert Sweet also recorded albums with Blissed, Titanic, Final Axe, DBeality, Seventh Power.

It's really great top see you reacting to an unsung band. Stryper is one of my favorite bands from the time. You're right...they were different. They were a CHRISTIAN Metal band. They hail from Riverside, CA which is in the Inland Empire about an hour or so from Los Angeles. They were veterans of the Hollywood music scene in a time when it was at its height. Bands like Motley Crue, Dokken, Ratt, Quiet Riot, and Poison were all on the scene at the same time. They preach their faith in a lot of their songs...this song, if I'm not mistaken, was them Calling on Jesus. It was one of their more subtle references. This was on the album To Hell With The Devil, which received their most commercial airplay. My favorite album by them is the one that preceded To Hell With The Devil. It was titled Soldiers Under Command. This was around 1984 or 85. I'm not looking up the information, but commenting from memory. Their dual guitar attack was used uniquely for the time as you called it to duet. It's part of their signature sound. You can find many live videos on KZbin, but they did not make a lot of music videos, As I said they were a Christian band, so their message did not always resonate with the rebellious youth of the time. They not only preached the word of God, but they appeared to live it too. The bands at the time were used to shock value and hedonistic excess. Musically they created some of the best stuff available at the time. The members, as I recall, were as follows: Michael Sweet - Guitar and lead vocals Oz Fox - Guitar Tim Gaines - Bass (This is the one name I am unsure of without looking it up) Robert Sweet - Drums I was a young drummer at the time in the 80s and Robert Sweet was one of my all time favorites. I used to play along with his songs all the time when just messing around. Very unique time signatures and riffs he used in his music. Definitely influenced my playing style. A couple of my favorite songs by them to check out: Soldiers Under Command Walking In A Winter Wonderland (Yes...they did the Christmas classic.) First Love Makes Me Want To Sing I love dual guitars, and they used them better than almost anyone in my opinion. If you want to hear another band that used dual guitars well I would suggest you look for Lizzy Borden. They were another LA act. Unlike Stryper they were a shock rock band. They were heavily influenced by Alice Cooper. Their stage show featured theatrical effects. They gained some fame in the local scene, but never really took off nationally. They did get some air play on MTV, but were not a very big band commercially. Look for their songs off of the Give Em The Ax and Love You To Pieces albums. They also did a concert video of those songs called The Murderous Metal Road Show that was released on home video and is probably floating around KZbin.

Stryper is THE "Christian Hard Rock Band".. been that way since the early 80's. They're so good and the singer writes 99% of all their songs, and he's also a heck of a shredder on guitar too. The drummer and the singer are brothers. They're newer stuff is heavier and his voice is a lower register now, he's in his 50's, but he can still hit those high notes when he wants to..
