A lot of people are explaining the colloquialisms used in the song. So, as an Australian, I thought I'd share the deeper meaning behind the song itself. See, Down Under is specifically a song which explores the commercialisation of Australia and Australian Culture. The song follows the adventures of a Australian man touring the world, as each verse starts, the man finds himself in a different place; first along a "Hippie Trail"(a weed-smoking pilgrimage) most likely somewhere in Asia, then the Belgian Capital of Brussels in Europe, and finally in an Opium Den in Bombay(Modern Mumbai) in India. As he travels he finds that no matter where he goes, people recognise him as an Australian, and they all take joy in attempting to get him to open up about Australia, and about many of our cultural practices that may seem odd to non-Australians, they talk about Australia as it's been advertised and sold to them; As a land of Well off people, beautiful Beach Women, and strong working men. Each person they met along the way represents different foreign understandings of Australia. The lady, who lives along the hippie trail, most likely deeply connected to the counter-culture movements of the times, still finds herself sold on the idea of Australia as itself advertised, she's incredibly curious about Australia, and wants to know if it meets the expectations tourism boards make it out to be. The Belgian Man, who lives in Brussel, believes himself to be Australian, either by birth or culturally, he revels in his misunderstanding of Australia, "I come from a land down under" he proclaims, "Where beer does flow and men chunder!". and finally, the Indian man in Bombay, wishes to know more about Australia and perhaps wishes to move there one day, he wishes to know more about Australia as he has been told it is a land of wealth and opportunity, almost like an America in Asia. All these people have been sold an image of Australia, as a land of curiosity, as a land of familiarity, and as a land of opportunity, this image has been sold to them by not only private tourism companies, but the Australian Government itself.

The "Land Down Under" is Australia, where the group is from. The lyrics were written by lead singer Colin Hay, who explained in his Songfacts interview: "The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the overdevelopment of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It's really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that."

YES YE, YES! My name is Eileen and I have been to Ireland 3 times. Last time I spent 3 weeks. This was a "One Hit Wonder" by Dexie and his runners, but it was so popular. It is played a lot on Internet stations cuz I hear it played in stores a lot. It is fun to dance to, and it is autobiographical: yes a true story which actually happened to Dexie, real name is Kevin Rowland. He is from Ireland and the video of the song was filmed in Ireland in the street. Watch it cuz it is so cute.
