The best thing to do when you are tired is to rest.

I really disagree with your first point, or maybe just the way you worded. I just want to say that the need of rest is very important and so commonly underaprecciated and misunderstood. It has nothing to do with lazyness, or momentary discomfort, and I think you mixed this concepts in a confusing way in the video. General fatigue and mental exhaustion are serious problems, and sometimes the world/career/workplace should accomodate your needs. But I really liked the strategies you gave, they've helped me a lot trough the years, and to cope with my mental issues a lot better. So great and important!

Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Elena! I don't know if you've seen a few of my recent Instagram posts, but I am all about resting appropriately! Many dancers push themselves too hard outside of dance because they are driven by not feeling good enough or deserving of rest. While I do believe in cross training, I promote doing so conscientiously and from a place of doing it to honor your body and your goals, not as a form of self-punishment. Now for dealing with exhaustion in the studio, I was speaking form my experience of watching other dancers disengage and get lazy in the work environment, justifying their behaviors as if they think they are the only one that is tired. This attitude can be unprofessional and very frustrating when everybody is working hard and tired at times but still shows up and applies themselves as best as they can. Of course, I probably worded this statement in a bit more of a rant-y way, so thank you for giving me the chance to clarify. While I am not advocating for completely pushing way past your limits, I do want to promote being thoughtful, responsible, and respectful in the studio. Now If a dancer is dealing with a mental or physical health problem, that is a completely different topic and my comments about pushing through it or getting over it certainly do not apply. I was speaking of just being tired from either working hard or not being responsible outside of class and using that as an excuse to justify laziness. I hope that cleared some things up!

She put considerable effort into clearly explaining the difference between honouring your body and pushing it too far and not giving ones best or falling back on an excuse of being too tired because tiredness is part of dancing.

Thank you Jessica, that is such an amazing point! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that because it totally belongs on the list! Of course some comments from teachers are truly terrible and I do not endorse just pushing through verbal abuse, but for normal constructive criticism, dancers definitely just have to avoid taking remarks personally.

So, if someone says their dead pointe-shoe is the reason for a mistake, the assumption is they're lying?
