Just watched this. I’m making 10 axe handles for a family project. When my father died he left 300 axe heads behind - the ten best of those are getting custom sheaths made by a fantastic leather worker. Ill be giving one completed axe each to each of his grand children. I’m doing the handles and mounting and I’m going to go this route! I will do something fancy for the wedge though - maybe make them out of the same laminate, or machine them out of metal. Oooooooh, I just realized I can braze brass, stainless and copper for a metal wedge that is also laminated.

I wondered where all the axe heads were- now i know. Its interesting you mentioned that. I had a job where i drove all over Indiana back in the 90's and i never past-by an antique shop without stopping. I would see dozens of axe heads back then, usually for under $5 apiece. Recently I had an idea for a project and set out to retrace my route to by as many as i could find. Couldnt find a SINGLE axe head-not one. I asked one of the owners what gives with no axe heads and he told me a short time ago someone came around and bought every old axe he had in stock and that person told the owner he was buying all he could find. Not sure what the guy was doing with them. I remember the last few farm auctions i went to back in the 80's- you could buy a bucketful of hammers hatchets axes and misc for $10. I wish I had bought more.

.... So I'm just finishing getting geared up to make my own 2 and 3 pound hammers and thought I was gonna be all special and use exotic wood. I now realize that a basic exotic handle is the work of a filthy peasant. I bend the knee to you sir, that was an incredible result.
Man those Came out so Beautiful!!! I wouldn't want to even use them lol they'd be wall hangers for me because they are so Beautiful! And One of a kind art work. Thanks for sharing! Take care and have a great day.

What a beautiful handle. GREAT idea. I assume the thinner the wood the better although it looks like at least one of the pieces is at least a 1/4"?

Those turned out really awesome! After some use, how have they held up? Just wondering if the glue held good. Really neat!!!
@FarmCraft1015 жыл бұрын
I actually broke one, but I was just prying way too aggressively. Abusing the hammer basically. But the glue didn't fail, it just splintered the wood like it would have done with any handle.

Hi, nice work! Surprised you have so few subscribers. You've got a new one now :) I've seen in a few of your tool handle videos you sometimes hammer on stuff in your bench vise and the item tends to slip down as you are working on it. Have you considered putting some leather in there? When I did that with my vise it made a huge difference in its holding power. No need to glue the leather in place or anything, I just have a long strip that I hang across when I want to clamp something in.
@FarmCraft1018 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip! I like that.

Hi. Love your content. Got a question. How much would you estimate all the equipment you have costs?
@FarmCraft1013 жыл бұрын
I have about $15k in woodworking tools I've purchased over the last couple decades. Add another $9k if you include my sawmill. But they have all definitely paid for themselves in the things I have made with them.
@geohazelman70393 жыл бұрын
@@FarmCraft101 Awesome. Thanks for the reply. Looks like I have some saving up to do!
@FarmCraft1013 жыл бұрын
@@geohazelman7039 It's not cheap, but not as bad as most people think, especially if you can generate some savings or income from your tools. I bought my first real woodworking tools about 20 years ago, a planer, jointer, and a table saw. If you divide the 15k by 20 years (240 months), that comes to just over $60/month. With a little discipline and determination, anybody can do that. Good luck!

Crazy looking handles, but I sure like them! Is the hole in your bench for doing twisted laminations? To get a 2" finished size, how much would you add for side slippage when you twist? Mark
@FarmCraft1016 жыл бұрын
The hole is a tail vise, but it was convenient for this project. I'm not sure on how much to add, maybe 1/2"? Cut a few test piece and twist them and it will give you an idea. Thanks for watching!

Beautiful handle and great work but why did you waste your time on a cheap HDX hammer head. I could see it if it was a plumb or another American quality brand, but a HDX Home Depot's budget tool hardly does justice to the good wok you put in to it.
