I enjoy the esthetics of your projects. As I was watching you forge the blade pieces I thought to myself “there’s way too much oxidation on those pieces to get a proper forge weld. They will just delaminate.” Seeing the billet break apart as you twisted it, I thought I was right… and then you made a ring. Guess I was wrong. Nicely done.

Real smart idea to turn that twist into a ring...The way it sheared so easily as you twisted it showed that the steel was not strong or tough enough to make a knife blade...But a ring?? Perfect! 👍

When I twist pattern welded steel, I use a pipe wrench with an extra handle welded to the top, so I have a twist rod with a central attachment point, like the die holder you used first. Perhaps making such a tool would help you?

@sypernova6969

superglueing parts on the lathe seems to be pretty common. the glue is strong enough and it`s not hard to remove, especially with a little heat (or not).

Sorry, but I have to ask... in the first welding phase, with the addition of borax, were you able to weld the layers together without bringing them to white heat? Because it was bery bright yellow, but didn't seem sparkling white, to me... So is it possible a forge welding even a bit low than white heat?

What would happen if maybe used steel banding from pallets alternating with bandsaw blades. Would these make for good knife materials?
@NathanNostaw
@NathanNostaw 2 жыл бұрын
Some strapping is high tensile steel and others lower. For my wedding ring I have bandsaw and unknown metal strap. I punched the hole rather than drill and used a die-grinder to get final size. It rings like high tensile steel, but not sure if it would make good knife material. If making a ring, I would recomend low layer count as it ends up too fine to notice. I think mine is only about 28 layer and the pattern looks good.

Have you considered making knives from old mower blades? They are usually very good steel.
@NathanNostaw
@NathanNostaw 2 жыл бұрын
Mower blades are very tough, but may not keep a good sharp edge. There is a fine balance between though and hard. Thhe fact a mower blade can handle hitting rocks all day and be sharpened with a file leads to it not being great for knives.
