There's some major flaws, in my experience. First, most tornadoes I've seen, when you're close up, are shrouded in rain. Half the time you can't see them for the rain. Especially when they hit at sundown.

@@Hiraghm This is only the case in high-precipitation storms. If all of these tornadoes were discrete supercell thunderstorms, it's highly likely they could be in a low-precipitation environment and thus not shrouded in rain and highly visible. It all just depends.

I saw this with my now ex-wife on opening day in an empty theater. The drive in movie scene made me jump when I saw the interference on the TV screen. My wife at the time asked me why I jumped. I let her know that the moving air and debris in a tornado creates an EMP type electromagnetic impulse that messes with TV and radio signals. I didn't tell her that the summer before I punched the core in a small tornado in my Jeep Wrangler. The radio made a rhythmical warble sound due to the interference and the wind hit us from one side, then the other as me and my nephew drove through it. And, yes, back in the '80s I did see flying cows.

Fun fact: Jami Gertz, who plays Melissa, the fiance, is one of the wealthiest actors in the world, if not the wealthiest. Thpugh she has had a successful film and TV career (Twister, Less Than Zerom The Lost Boys, Sixteen Candles) in the 80s and 90s, her husband Tony Ressler is co-founder of Ares Management which owns the NBA team The Atlanta Hawks, and the MLB team The Milwaukee Brewers. So...she's worth around $8 BILLION as of 2024. The story for the film was co-written by Michael Cricton, the novelist behind Jurassic Park. Helen Hunt was four years into her run as the co-star of the hit sitcom Mad About You when she made this, and one year away from winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for As Good As It Gets, which co-starred Jack Nicholson (who won Best Actor for the same film). The film was directed by Jan De Bont, who also directed Speed.

For some people, storm chasing is an adrenalin thing, like sky diving. But for most people, it's just that they love storms and meteorology. Chasing and spotting are a way that they can use their knowledge and interest to help others stay safe. I can't tell if you cut it off right at the kiss or if you kept watching for a bit, but if you keep watching, the camera continues to pull back for an ultra-wide shot and you can see the path of the tornado and just how huge it was.

I'd seen Twister in the theater and several days later was in again for another movie. That movie kept getting these menacing roars at odd times and I didn't understand until it hit me that the adjacent room was the largest theater in my state, with the best sound system for its time, and Twister was playing. The storm sound effects were just that powerful. I'm not surprised it received an Oscar nomination for Sound Effects.

IMHO the older farmers know the weather better than anyone trained by a school. Bill in the film shows a sense every farmer develops that no school can teach. I wouldn't say Storm Chasers like Tornadoes, it's more a fascination with an unknown and trying to help people. Storm Chasers help provide a lot of helpful information to the towns and weather stations about the storms and the location of the tornadoes. They have also helped as initial rescue groups. They try to help people as much as they can before and after these storms. Stormchasers have helped save lives and continue to do so. That being said, there is definitely an aspect of craziness to them because you have to be a bit crazy to chase something that is as dangerous and unpredictable as tornadoes.

Hi Addie! My son and I chase tornadoes in the Ohio/Indiana area. In 2020 he was 18 and went out on his own chasing a tornado at night around the Dayton, Ohio area. You’re not supposed to chase at night because you can’t see the tornado except when lightning flashes. That’s actually shown in the movie when they’re at the drive-in theater. There’s a possibility you could drive right into the tornado and not even realize it. Anyway, he spotted the tornado and called it into the weather service. They issued a warning and people took cover. Eventually categorized as an F-4,(166-200mph) the tornado caused an estimated $1.5 billion in damage, making it the sixth most expensive tornado in history, yet it only killed three people. We have countless messages from people telling us how the warning saved their lives. I get a lump in my throat just thinking about it now.

There are as many motivations for storm chasing as there are people who do it, I think. The adrenaline isn't usually it, though - it's very exciting for short periods, but there's so. many. hours. spent by a roadside looking at the sky and waiting. Obviously the movies skip that bit. 😊 It's worth it, but thrill-seekers would probably get bored. That scene with the group all yelling to go to the aunt's place for food is one of the realistic little details in the movie. When you're on full-on active chasing you can be stuck having fast food for lunch and dinner day after day, and the craving for proper food is real.

I read a lot of journals that were wrote by soldiers during the American Civil War, and 1 person had a similar experience as the F5 barn scene at the end of the movie. His name was Sam Watkins and he fought for the Confederacy and served in the 2nd Tennessee Infantry. 2 years into the war he wrote about a night in camp, it was storming and raining and lightning flashes was the only time he could see anything. He saw a bunch of his men come running out of the trees shouting to everyone run. Sam and a young soldier Billy ran and took shelter in a near by barn. He describes everything was pitch black, things slamming into the walls and sounded like a runaway locomotive. It lasted only a few minutes and after it passed he looked up and saw the roof was gone. He rolled over and saw Billy had his head and chest crushed in with bricks. He saw his arm was broken and his body was otherwise mutilated. He went on to say Billy was about 16 with curly blonde hair, and that he looked like a girl. The book is Sam Watkins: Company Aytch "

Growing up in the north end of Tornado Alley it was common to see these especially in the spring time. I've followed many tornadoes over the years. We once had one that dropped from a single thunder head cloud with sunshine all around us and was on the ground for over 20 miles. I followed to from the time it spawned until it dissipated. That one was only an F2. Thankfully the damage was minimal and no one was injured or killed from that one. An example of an F5 tornado is the one that hit Joplin, MO. in 2011. It had a damage path a mile in width. The tornado was on the ground for 46 minutes. It did $2.8 billion in damages making it the most costly tornado in US history. 1,150 people were injured and there were 158 deaths.

Aerial pics of the damage makes if look like as if God himself dragged his finger across the land, Hence the term. The El Reno tornado was the biggest ever recorded in earths history with a 2.6 mile wide base and recorded wind speeds of just over 300 MPH. Also perhaps the reason we like watch tornadoes is because the absolute raw natural power they possess. You cant help but stare in awe.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I'd heard that the theaters were instructed to turn up the volume and it sure felt like it. You could feel the rumble and growl of the tornadoes through your whole body! Talk about amping up the tension! I remember going to a different movie around the same time it came out and I could hear and feel the rumble from the next theater and I instantly knew what was playing over there!

"Dorothy" and "Toto" were the instrument packs built by Jo and her team from the University of Oklahoma. The one built by Jonas Miller had the shortened named version of Dorothy, nicknamed D.O.T (Digital Orthographic Telemeter). During the El Reno tornado event, several experienced storm chasers were killed because they miscalculated how large the tornado was, and that the tornado would change its direction and speed. I don't think storm chasing would be as exciting s watching Addie playing 'Twister'. lol.

This movie inspired a generation of new storm chasers. Since this movie was made, the Fujita (F) scale has been revised and is now referred to as the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale. The last EF5 tornado that occurred in the United States was almost 11 years ago which struck Moore, OK on May 20, 2013. The widest tornado ever recorded was the May 31, 2013 El Reno tornado, which was 2.6 miles wide. That tornado was originally classified as an EF5, but was later downgraded to an EF3.

They actually tried something similar to Dorothy in the 70s and 80s called TOTO (Totable Tornado Observatory), but never worked. The 3 sensor deploy units from this movie can be seen on display at The National Weather Center in Norman, OK. The guy on TV at 1:17 is Gary England, he was a meteorologist in Oklahoma, my home state for 41+ years before he retired. F5 tornadoes are really rare. The Fujita scale started in 1971 and only 67 total have ever been recorded.

Addie's dog in the opening is Ollie. She and her boyfriend, Jeremy, adopted him last year shortly after Titus died. He did appear in many of her earlier videos before LOTR when she used to record in the bedroom of her old apartment. He would occasionally lay on the bed in the background.

That was an amazing reaction! Thank you so much for watching this icon! Believe it or not, they actually interviewed 2 people who actually were in the middle of the tornado and survived. So everything Bill and Jo saw were exactly as the survivors described it. Helen Hunt has also been in these films: Quarterback Princess, based on true story about a girl being a kicker on all boys football team, and Soul Surfer, which based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton’s shark attack and overcoming her obstacles to get back in the water. If you want more natural disaster films I recommend Dante’s Peak and Volcano. 👩🏼👨🏻🌪

That's Philip Seymour Hoffman. He quit drugs and alcohol when he was 22 years old and remained sober for 23 years. In 2014, he relapsed and died from an OD. Usually, I'm not really affected when a celebrity dies. After all, I don't personally know them but in his case, for some reason, it did affect me.

There was a tornado that passed over my house in 2002? Took out a piece of fence on either side... as it went over, it sounded like a jet engine. The El Reno tornado sounded kind of like frying bacon... because all I could hear was the torrential rains pounding my car.

I remember driving back to my apt in the middle of the night after the El Reno tornado. The entire city was black, with some lights in the distance. I got turned around, ended up going down Newcastle road... took the next turn north... The railroad crossing alarm was going off... it was also canted at a 30 degree angle. I crossed the tracks, started driving north toward the city lights still on... Suddenly they all went out. I slowed, but kept going, wondering if there'd been a power failure. Then my headlights showed the corrugated metal building that had been blown directly onto the road ahead of me.

I would play Twister with you, Addie ❤ A number of natural disaster movies were released in the 90s. I'd recommend you watch Volcano (1997), with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche. When Jo and Bill were inside the tornado at the end, yes they could have been killed by flying debris, but people have also died from suffocation, by having the air sucked out of their lungs by the twister's updraft. You might not like this, Addie, but for anyone who liked the movie, you should check out the Discovery channel documentary series from a few years ago called Storm Chasers, about a group of storm chasers and an IMAX film director who built a special vehicle to be able to shoot footage from inside a tornado.

DOROTHY somewhat resembles TOTO, the TOtable Tornado Observatory. TOTO didn't have flying sensors and never actually flew, although it did get sideswiped once and knocked over. The first direct internal observation of a tornado in US history was done by a flat, disc-shaped sensor that took a direct hit from an F4. That tornado completely wiped an entire small town off the map and it was never rebuilt. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester,_South_Dakota en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_South_Dakota_tornado_outbreak There is video (from the sensor's cameras) of the direct hit that's worth a look if you're interested in that sort of thing.

The only error I've found in this movie: in the opening scene (1969) Jo's dad says the news was calling for an F5, but the Fujita Scale wasn't invented until 1971. Side note: Aunt Meg's dog is played by at least three different actors. The fuel truck that blows up is Benthic Petroleum, the same company that owns the oil rig in, The Abyss.
