I saw this with my now ex-wife on opening day in an empty theater. The drive in movie scene made me jump when I saw the interference on the TV screen. My wife at the time asked me why I jumped. I let her know that the moving air and debris in a tornado creates an EMP type electromagnetic impulse that messes with TV and radio signals. I didn't tell her that the summer before I punched the core in a small tornado in my Jeep Wrangler. The radio made a rhythmical warble sound due to the interference and the wind hit us from one side, then the other as me and my nephew drove through it. And, yes, back in the '80s I did see flying cows.

Fun fact: Jami Gertz, who plays Melissa, the fiance, is one of the wealthiest actors in the world, if not the wealthiest. Thpugh she has had a successful film and TV career (Twister, Less Than Zerom The Lost Boys, Sixteen Candles) in the 80s and 90s, her husband Tony Ressler is co-founder of Ares Management which owns the NBA team The Atlanta Hawks, and the MLB team The Milwaukee Brewers. So...she's worth around $8 BILLION as of 2024. The story for the film was co-written by Michael Cricton, the novelist behind Jurassic Park. Helen Hunt was four years into her run as the co-star of the hit sitcom Mad About You when she made this, and one year away from winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for As Good As It Gets, which co-starred Jack Nicholson (who won Best Actor for the same film). The film was directed by Jan De Bont, who also directed Speed.

For some people, storm chasing is an adrenalin thing, like sky diving. But for most people, it's just that they love storms and meteorology. Chasing and spotting are a way that they can use their knowledge and interest to help others stay safe. I can't tell if you cut it off right at the kiss or if you kept watching for a bit, but if you keep watching, the camera continues to pull back for an ultra-wide shot and you can see the path of the tornado and just how huge it was.

I wouldn't say Storm Chasers like Tornadoes, it's more a fascination with an unknown and trying to help people. Storm Chasers help provide a lot of helpful information to the towns and weather stations about the storms and the location of the tornadoes. They have also helped as initial rescue groups. They try to help people as much as they can before and after these storms. Stormchasers have helped save lives and continue to do so. That being said, there is definitely an aspect of craziness to them because you have to be a bit crazy to chase something that is as dangerous and unpredictable as tornadoes.

There are as many motivations for storm chasing as there are people who do it, I think. The adrenaline isn't usually it, though - it's very exciting for short periods, but there's so. many. hours. spent by a roadside looking at the sky and waiting. Obviously the movies skip that bit. 😊 It's worth it, but thrill-seekers would probably get bored. That scene with the group all yelling to go to the aunt's place for food is one of the realistic little details in the movie. When you're on full-on active chasing you can be stuck having fast food for lunch and dinner day after day, and the craving for proper food is real.

Growing up in the north end of Tornado Alley it was common to see these especially in the spring time. I've followed many tornadoes over the years. We once had one that dropped from a single thunder head cloud with sunshine all around us and was on the ground for over 20 miles. I followed to from the time it spawned until it dissipated. That one was only an F2. Thankfully the damage was minimal and no one was injured or killed from that one. An example of an F5 tornado is the one that hit Joplin, MO. in 2011. It had a damage path a mile in width. The tornado was on the ground for 46 minutes. It did $2.8 billion in damages making it the most costly tornado in US history. 1,150 people were injured and there were 158 deaths.

Hi Addie! My son and I chase tornadoes in the Ohio/Indiana area. In 2020 he was 18 and went out on his own chasing a tornado at night around the Dayton, Ohio area. You’re not supposed to chase at night because you can’t see the tornado except when lightning flashes. That’s actually shown in the movie when they’re at the drive-in theater. There’s a possibility you could drive right into the tornado and not even realize it. Anyway, he spotted the tornado and called it into the weather service. They issued a warning and people took cover. Eventually categorized as an F-4,(166-200mph) the tornado caused an estimated $1.5 billion in damage, making it the sixth most expensive tornado in history, yet it only killed three people. We have countless messages from people telling us how the warning saved their lives. I get a lump in my throat just thinking about it now.

The widest tornado ever recorded was the May 31, 2013 El Reno tornado, which was 2.6 miles wide. That tornado was originally classified as an EF5, but was later downgraded to an EF3.

I looked around and saw everyone look at their phones, then go back to their conversations. I was thinking we should all get in the back room of the store or something because 2 of the walls are all glass.

That was an amazing reaction! Thank you so much for watching this icon! Believe it or not, they actually interviewed 2 people who actually were in the middle of the tornado and survived. So everything Bill and Jo saw were exactly as the survivors described it. Helen Hunt has also been in these films: Quarterback Princess, based on true story about a girl being a kicker on all boys football team, and Soul Surfer, which based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton’s shark attack and overcoming her obstacles to get back in the water. If you want more natural disaster films I recommend Dante’s Peak and Volcano. 👩🏼👨🏻🌪

Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Dusty just makes this movie for me. As a kid, I always hoped to have a wild friend like him when I got older.

I would play Twister with you, Addie ❤ A number of natural disaster movies were released in the 90s. I'd recommend you watch Volcano (1997), with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche. When Jo and Bill were inside the tornado at the end, yes they could have been killed by flying debris, but people have also died from suffocation, by having the air sucked out of their lungs by the twister's updraft. You might not like this, Addie, but for anyone who liked the movie, you should check out the Discovery channel documentary series from a few years ago called Storm Chasers, about a group of storm chasers and an IMAX film director who built a special vehicle to be able to shoot footage from inside a tornado.

Melissa from Twister and Jerry from Liar Liar need to get married. They're both the most understanding spurned lovers ever.

When this movie came out, the cow scene was the most commented and also the most criticized, with time, the critics have been forgotten and the scene became iconic. When one thinks of a movie with a tornado, one thinks "cow".

"We got cows!" Scene cracks me up...

the special effects in this movie are low key some of the best of all time. go look up which scenese are CGI, theyre mostly completely flawless, especially for when this movie came out.

wife and I saw this at the theater when it was released, now, every time bad weather comes around, my go-to is asking her if she would like to watch it again!

When the El Reno tornado hit, the weatherman (can't remember which one I was watching), put a "stickpin" right on top of my apartment complex on the map, and said, "you have 13 minutes to get below ground." There was no 'below ground".
