I know how old I was when this movie came out, because the second time I went to watch it, they asked how old I was. "I'm 26, why?" So obsessed with this for a long time, sadly it was before the proper Internet so I couldn't get hooked up with other fans. Anyway, saw it three times in the theater, have the DVD, made both my grown-up children watch it. My daughter wondered why I'd wanted to give her a heart attack. Um, anyway, great movie - very tense but with comedic and romantic moments sprinkled in. Always enjoy watching your reactions, Addie!

Fun fact, for the movie they actually made a bus jump, although not over an empty space, but over a continuous asphalt bridge. They used a ramp, that's why when it gets to the edge it looks like the front of the bus rises, and then in edition they removed from the film the ramp and part of the bridge to make it look like it jumped over a gap.

For another fun Sandra Bullock movie that most people haven't even seen, much less reacted to, check out "Love Potion No. 9". MythBusters took on Speed at one point, and found out two things that were cool in the movie but just don't work in real life. They tried the high speed turn, and found out that no, the bus wasn't going to tip over. They then tried the bus jump, and found out that much like the sheep in Monty Python, the bus would not so much fly as plummet. It would have just nose-dived right off the edge. Once again, they proved that movie physics are much more fun than real physics.

I read that even though he went uncredited Joss Whedon wrote a good portion of the script. There was also a draft of the script where the person that put the bomb on the bus was actually going to Harry, Jack's partner. The first bomber had died at the beginning, but due to injuries he sustained, mostly Jack shooting him in the leg, caused Harry to have to retire from the LAPD. Blaming Jack for what happened and the pension being crap Harry put the bomb on the bus to hold it for ransom and to kill Jack. It was only after they cast Jeff Daniels as Harry that the script was changed, because the studio thought Jeff Daniels was "too likeable" and the audience wouldn't buy him as a bad guy.
