PORK BIRRIA TACOS: This is a delicious Mexican dish serves with corn tortillas, onion, cilantro and lime. The birria broth is cooked for 5 hours in a slow cooker at high heat. If you cannot find tortilla, you may use paratha or roti. That will change the original taste but the broth should taste the same. We used pasilla chili for making the broth. Passila chilies are rich in flavor but mild in spiciness. If you are going to use other types of chilies then, make sure you add the right amount.
Ingredients (8-10 servings: About 20-25 tacos)
Pork Chops 900g
Onion 1 large
Garlic 2 cloves
Bouillon Cube 1
Bay Leaves 2
Salt 2 tsp
Oregano ¼ tsp
Pasilla Chili Powder 3 tbsp
Tomato Puree 6 tbsp
Corn Tortilla
Cilantro
Cheese
Lime

I know traditionally, birria is made with beef, however, I'm glad to find that pork can be used, too! I have a huge roast pork, mostly all meat and little fat, but I think by throwing in a few pork bones into the pot with all the rest of the ingredients, I hope to achieve that good "birria" broth. I don't have a pressure cooker, so I guess I'll take my time to cook it for the amount of hours it would take to get the best results, I'm craving for. Thank you!

This recipe looks super promising but a bit of advice for you. Pork chops are the wrong cut of meat for this. They don't have the fat content You should be looking for when doing a low and slow braise like this. Best way to do it, either Boston butt or a picnic roast. Get a cast iron skillet red hot, season and brown the meat on all sides to get a good sear, then add the rest of the ingredients and cook on low for as long as it takes.

If you are using the slow cooker mode, then follow the same cooking time mentioned in the video. But if you want to try the pressure cooker mode, then I would cook 40 mins first, wait until it release the pressure, shred the meat, add tomato puree and cook for another 20 mins. Thank you. Let me know if you need further info. I appreciate if you can share your experience. Thanks!

Chili plays a major role in Birria. You need to have chilis to get the required taste of the Birria broth. Chilies adds flavor as well as the reddish color to the broth.

Can I use chilly powder or dry chillies if I can't find pasilla chilly powder?
@TwistWithATaste
@TwistWithATaste 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. However, the main reason to use Pasilla chili for the dish is because of its great red color. Pasilla peppers have a mild heat and a great red color. In addition to Pasilla chili, you can also use dried poblano chili which is also called as ancho chili. It has similar mild spiciness. If not, please try chili power or dry chilies. But please do not use 3 tbsp. I would use 1-2 tsp. Hope this is helpful!

We used mozzarella cheese. But any kind of cheese would be just fine. And about chili powder, yes you can use chili powder. However, the taste may be a little different from the original. Additionally, I would not use 3tbsp chili powder. Pasilla chili has a mild spiciness compared to chili powder. So I recommend only to use about 1 - 2 tsp. Hope this is helpful. @TwistWithATaste

This dish looks spicy, but it only has mild spiciness. For this recipe, we used Pasilla chili, because of its great red color, but that is definitely not as hot as it looks. Pasilla peppers have a mild heat. On Scoville heat units, it is between 1,000 and 2,500. For reference, the spiciest pasilla pepper is as hot as the mildest jalapeño pepper. A mild heat jalapeño pepper is normally between 2,500 and 8,000 Scoville heat units. In addition to that, you can also use dried poblano chili which is also called as ancho chili. It has similar mild spiciness. Please note that, when you cook for a long time in slow heat, it definitely reduce the spiciness of the dish. I personally like spicy food. But this dish is one of the mildest dishes I have ever tasted.
