I am a full blooded native american from the mohawk tribe. My people have been braiding their hair into styles like dread locks, cornrows, and puffs/ buns for thousands of years. male and female warriors braided their hair like these before big treks, hunts, and raids. Yet sadly several fellow tribe members got harrassed this weekend for posting pictures of their animal crossing characters wearing braids and buns. We have freaking cave drawings from over 3 thousand years ago of my ancestors wearing these hairstyles for god's sake. But nope, my friends and loved ones get called racist and a whole bunch of crap. There is so much going on in the world that needs fixing. Sadly most of these twitter and instagram morons would rather waste their time and energy harassing people instead of doing things that actually matters. edit to add: a few months ago twitter twits were up in arms over some girl's character in ACNH wearing a kimono robe. Poor girl got harrassed and bashed and cancelled too. I really miss when animal crossing wasn't so mainstreamed. The community lately has just gotten so toxic.

Between systemic oppression, police brutality, and the constant legitimizing of racist behavior, a little girl on twitter, wearing afro puffs is, without exaggeration, the least of our concerns. There are many battles to fight, this is not one of them. You can tell her that they're afro-puffs, you can even tell how to do them herself, and where they came from. You should not do, is tell her she can't wear them, as if you'd literally take candy from a baby because that candy was made by an African-American. Preserving culture is not done by restricting its usage, its done by spreading it so everyone can appreciate the beautiful thing your culture has done. Leave the girl alone.

I know racism is still a thing and it is bad but god I don’t care about people stepping up on my behalf for stupid things like this! I don’t even care about jokes on behalf of black people anymore... as long as you don’t hurt me and the ones I care about you can say what you want! It’s best of course to not be a dick but yeah as long as you don’t hurt other people run your mouth as much as you want because let’s be honest at least on the internet: “nobody can stop you from saying the worst shit!” And these kind of people who are combating racism by basically being racist themselves are not helping if anything they are lowering themselves to the people they want to combat! I honestly hate people with this "Saviour" ideology. I'll never understand why you believe that you have to feel offended on issues that personally don't and will NEVER affect you. You're not being an ally, you're just making yourself a fool and coming off 10x more ignorant and racist to what you believe is ignorant and racist. We should focus on the fact that these hair styles are in the game in the first place. It doesn't matter who uses it cause it's a video game with an avatar you can customize. The fact that they're in the game is enough to showcase appreciation for more cultures around the world.

I'm willing to bet a kidney that the vast majority of the people dragging her are young, non-Black kids that have a very surface-level understanding of what cultural appropriation is, and go for the nuclear option because sadly, that sort of behaviour is rewarded as opposed to becoming conversation catalyst. The black people that try to inject nuance into the conversation will be ignored by the people too embarrassed to admit that they are poorly informed. I remember being stunned watching a group of mostly White and non-Korean Asian Kpop fans discussing cultural appropriation, and the person leading the conversation said it boiled down to someone saying "konnichiwa" to any asian person, or eating sushi incorrectly, all whilst using (incorrectly to the point of cringe, I might add) Black American slang and references. Loads of these people have no idea what they are talking about, pat themselves on the back for thrashing someone on the internet, and make us Black/marginalised groups in question look like the overly sensitive babies that lash out at everything

I'm white and I just want to make people happy. I posted a comment on KZbin once, and a straight dude replied saying something (I forget what) about how something was offensive and other gay people were like "dude I'm gay and that's not offensive". Is it really that bad that she nicknames them "space buns" though? Like if I would wear a long Mohawk with spikes and call it the spinny spikey, why should someone care? It is just a nickname for a haircut. Nobody tries to belittle any group of people with that. I mean I am a dude with long hair and if I would now wear my hair in that singular french braided style and would call it the "adventure bread" or some ridiculous stuff should females or french people now be offended because I use "their" hairstyle and give it my own nickname? @@bort3624 I saw that proof. Though I don't think that now means people who came to her defense at the time were necessarily in the wrong. After all, many were disregarding the misnomer entirely (which we now know was probably an intentional misnomer to anger people) and focusing on the fact that she's a white girl "wearing a black hairstyle" that's "not for white people". Ultimately, they were still way too easily offended. Also, the knowledge that the girl actually does have a racist history took a fair amount of deep investigation to find out, something you just can't realistically expect most Twitter users to do. So, again, those who came to her defense at the time were not in the wrong and are not retroactively now in the wrong for having done so.
