You can’t even tell race unless it’s a black or white skin color. That’s how generic most anime character’s ethnicity is. For example, JJBA. You can barely tell the difference between British, Japanese, or some Egyptians unless they’re wearing specific clothing.

I remember there was once a drama whenever Usagi from Sailor moon is Asian or Caucasian (blond hair blue eyes) and the response from Japanese people was like: the f u talk abt. She's a drawing, idiot. And thats basically how most people in Japan feel about live action adaptations. Many people in Japan liked Hollywood version of "all you need is kill" (the Hollywood version was called something like edge of tomorrow) and the point is that they don't really care unless you would make a complete mockery of their own culture

man they must not realize that for decades japan liked to draw a lot of characters with strong features from caucasians (mainly chins that stuck out more) regardless of their nationality. nevermind the "power fantasy" style dominated by Hokuto No Ken where they tended to draw half the men as american 80's action heroes on steroids. (I think Arnold made a big impression) Japan does what they do. I don’t know if this is true or not. But I remember reading somewhere that Usagi being blonde with blue eyes, is to make her stand out from the rest, or make her look more ‘special’. I think it was also around the time when those blonde pretty boy characters were becoming insanely popular At the time? Apparently the reason being that the Blonde and Blue eyes look in Manga and Anime culture was either seen as unique, ethereal and 'beautiful' at the time, or a symbol of delinquency and rebellion. But all in all, it’s just a design choice. Purely aesthetic.

When they start wording things with "De-anime" and such, it sounds a lot like "cleansing" something unwanted. One can easily describe non-anime depictions of characters with words like "realism", which would describe the modern Resident Evil games, for example. So to invent terms like "De-animefication" when describing the process of reimagining a character in a style that is not anime, it rubs me the wrong way. Sounds like veiled bias and disrespect to the anime art style.
@Donika691

It's almost as if these people are selectively ignoring the reason that anime characters have such large eyes to begin with, it has literally nothing to do with race and is only done to exaggerate the emotions of the characters. They're intentionally made out to look not quite human(unrealistic) so they can express emotions easier. No other medium in the world, even ironically live-action, can depict emotions as well as anime can. It's hiding these expressive eyes that make moments such as Maes Hughes's funeral and Rimuru standing over Shion's dead body hit so hard.

If this wasn't a race thing, then why even specify "asian" so heavily? also, even if what you said was the case, it'd still be worthy of scorn because a certain skin tone, or eyes not shaped like coin slots aren't inherently exaggerated features that need to be made "more realistic" that doesn't even make sense unless you think OP thinks asians with that skin tone, or rounder eyes aren't a thing. The traditional anime style was popularized by Tezuka who said he based it around what Disney was doing around the same time with heavy inspiration. That’s literally it. Disney did do some giant eyed expressive characters. That’s the main reason cartoons tend to be more expressive than real people and why the remakes Disney does with real actors aren’t as good as the originals. It’s almost like cartoons and animation allow for more creative flexibility and by trying to limit yourself to “realism” you end up losing a lot of the charm that works better in animation.

I think it's with the older remastered games and other supplementary games of RE like The Darkside Chronicles, as well as the CGI movies like Degeneration and Damnation They kinda went with the semi-realistic anime 3D styles there with the models which looked reminiscent of Final Fantasy characters and other Japanese 3D CGI movies. But even with that "animefication", western characters like Leon, Claire and Chris still looked western enough and Asian characters like Ada looked Asian. It's just a bit stylized. Japanese produced games and cgi movies have, this semi-realistic style that is very distinct and a bit inspired by anime. It's very different with Western style CGI which is more gritty.

3:44 gonna go with this ones take, however the modern concept of representation also annoys the heck out of me constantly. I especially am sick of people priming others to believe that if somehow someone who doesn't physically look like them isn't around in a piece of content, then somehow the content is denying them the ability to enjoy it, and they must screech for it to feel "included". I grew up never being drawn to needing to see someone looking like me and it wasn't in my media, because I didn't require skin deep stuff like that and connected with the characters and emotive points instead. I hate the press of changing characters that already existed to give people this even more. it's utterly lazy but people keep taking it and acting like it's amazing it's happening, like they are overjoyed for accepting what from their perspective should be table scraps. meanwhile content from people that im told would despise me because they wrote stuff that light a fire in my imagination. If people want this so much, why not "represent" cultural stories instead that haven't gotten that limelight, and do those proper justice- oh wait, one of the last ones of those i found out about completely mistold the story, and i was called an -ist for not wanting to support the blatant lie.

If you take anime character sand draw 'fanart' of them but just make them look like an average, stereotypical, almond-shape eyed person with black hair and more realistic features...that's not even fanart at that point. You are NOT drawing fanart if you make it an average looking, semi-realistic, stereotyped asian person with brown eyes and black hair in your drawing. That's referencing at best. But not fanart (unless you draw the clothes right...and who tf draw fanart for clothes?). Western Twitter should really stop trying to correct art and tell others how to 'do things right'. So they kinda are, to use this person's stupid term, "straight up white." At least half, anyway. Seriously, they literally could have picked any other character from Part 4 to be used as an example of a Japanese Jojo character in their stupid argument but decided to use the only two characters that aren't even fully Japanese. Though that doesn't even matter, because simply drawing an anime character how they look in said anime isn't drawing them "white," it's called being accurate to the source material.

Might get some heat for this, and I want to preface this by saying I love anime. But my one criticism is in the cases where you have stories that include and portray many different cultures and ethnicities it can be difficult to really tell who is from where. I just finished Kengan Ashura and started Kengan Omega, its a great show but the foreign fighters from England, France, German, and other more pale cultures look like they could also be from Japan and vise versa, its really only the darker skinned characters that look like they are really from another part of the world. WITH THAT SAID!!!!! Its the art style and an asian one at that, so I don't think its a good idea to lecture them on who to draw their characters

I don't really see where the OP went wrong with their initial post. They were basically just saying they personally like seeing fanart of anime characters that leans more towards realism. I guess what made people interpret it as racist would be the use of the word “Asian”; in that post op was talking about Japanese-implied anime characters yet they used the word Asian, which isn’t 100% wrong since Japan is part of Asia, but it still disregards the fact that not all Asian people are Japanese and look like your average japanese person. I do think that op should have worded themselves better but I also think that people in the replies shouldn’t have been as harsh and instead inform op on why they’re wrong. I’d say people interpreted the post as “I hate when Japanese characters made by Japanese people don’t look realistically Japanese” which yes, would be quite wrong and racist, but by what I understood op was saying “I like it when fanartists keep in mind the ethnicity of an anime character and draw them more realistically” which in my opinion is fair (especially thinking of a more realistic artist, imagine them drawing a bunch of different characters from different medias and of different ethnicities, and then drawing a Japanese anime character in an anime style, it would look weird and wrong…)

I'm not very big into anime, but I have seen a lot of Dragonball Z and saw all of Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. There really is some kind of a mishmash of ethnic markers in some characters. Goku and Vegeta look Japanese to me, as does Mustang and Kimly. Other characters look White, like Hughes and Armstrong. Female characters are usually harder to distinguish, because I think the ideal female for both white and Asians has those big "doe" eyes. Not always though. Lust definitely looks like an Asian female, but Winry not easy to decipher. I do think Winry is White. But the big doe eye thing is also used to portray innocence, and that's why they can get away with making Lust still very attractive, but with more discernable Asian features, since she's not an innocent character.
@sparking023
@sparking023 Жыл бұрын
huh, curious that you mention those because Dragon Ball Z and Fullmetal Alchemist have pretty stylized art, at least in terms of face features. I'm also curious as to what exactly do you define as "asian" and "white" markers because, first of, Goku and Vegeta are aliens. Second, you could say most of the characters in FMA are german, or at least an equivalent. And they do have Chinese characters in there too! Funny enough, Ling Yao does have the "slit eyes", but so does Brock from Pokemon and Ichimaru Gin from Bleach, so it's more the "when the closed eyes character opens them" trope than anything. Meanwhile, Lan Fan and Mei Cheng have very round eyes. And if you follow the german analogy, the people of Ishval would be jewish, or at least another group from the middle east. To me, the eyes are a good indicator of the personality of the character in question. Round and big eyes show purity, naivety, innocence, and a cheerful nature. Point in case Mei and Winry. Make them a little droopier and the character looks more melancholic. Make them dull and with half eyelids and the character looks more serene, monotone and/or emotionless. Sharper eyes could indicate a devious nature, like in Lust's case where her eyes point to her sultry personality. For Mustang, the sharp eyes indicate his serious attitude (most of the time). Square-ish eyes like Edward's usually go for energetic and youthful characters. You find that in many other anime character with similar personalities like Natsu, Shinra and Asta. Point being, DBZ and FMA are pretty good in differing their characters based on where they come from, but usually that comes in the form of clothes and behaviors. On the other hand, the average Highschool SoL will show off a girl that looks like any other but she has blue eyes and is blonde and boom! generally "European" exchange student
@apreviousseagle836
@apreviousseagle836 Жыл бұрын
@@sparking023 "I'm also curious as to what exactly do you define as "asian" and "white"" As a general rule, I think white features tend to be more square faced. The WB animated "blocky" style animated films (like all the different Batmans) usually capture those features well. And the eyes tend to not necessarily be larger, but they are usually straight horizontal, or slanted slightly upward. Asian eyes tend to be slanted slightly downwards, but not always (slant is only a small marker of eye ethnicity). And Asian faces tend to be rounder in a general sense as well (but also not the only marker of a face). There are people with eyes slanted very downward, but still look white, and others who have eyes slanted upward, but still look Asian. At the end of the day, my generalizations are only meant to make it a bit easier to discuss the animated portrayals a bit easier, and not meant to categorize everything and everyone (that's a much harder job). So with that said: Animated styles tend to be like artificial flavors. A watermelon probably has 60+ chemicals that give it its unique taste, but 5 of them are very prominent, and make up 80% of the flavor. So a company will stick those 5 flavors in a candy and BOOM! it tastes like watermelon.....................but not quite. Lemon is probably the easiest to nail, because real lemon probably has 90% citric acid, and that means you literally need to stick only Citric Acid in your candy, and it tastes like lemon. Guava would not be as easy to replicate. With animated characters, I would say the same is true: Goku and Vegeta have eyes that slant downward, they have heads are are more round, especially at the forehead, and their hairstyle is also typically associated with an Asian hairstyle. So I would say they are "Asian" looking. But Goku "could" be interpreted as White if you really wanted to. The fact that they are "aliens" doesn't matter. That's almost incidental. Does Superman look "Alien"? Or does he look like a White guy? FMA can certainly be alluded to a "German" country, while Ling Yao is from a "Chinese Dynasty" country. Wrath certainly has a very "German" look to him, as does Armstrong. They have those "square/angular" faces associated with White characters. Hughes still has White features, but softer, so he's probably more of a "British/Scottish" type. Women are harder to pinpoint. Is Winry white? I bet if you asked fans in the US, they would say yes, and if you asked fans in Japan, they would say she's Japanese. Lan Fan I think is a bit easier: She has the rounder face, and the button nose (also associated with Asian women). But for female characters, it's not so easy to just say they are White or East Asian. Is Hawkeye White or Asian? Is Maria Ross White or Asian? Where they run into a problem, is that, I believe it just so happens that some East Asian features make a drawing of a female character look more "feminine", and by proxy "cuter". Mira Armstrong is clearly not Asian, and her eyes do have a bit of a slant downward. But the other facial features are more angular, and the nose is larger, so she still looks female, but not "feminine", which was the point of her character. "Point being, DBZ and FMA are pretty good in differing their characters based on where they come from, but usually that comes in the form of clothes and behaviors." I do think there's a bit more than just the clothes, as stated above, but yet, you are right that probably 60% of it is everything other than the face. Mei has the hairstyle and clothing typically associated with Chinese traditions, and she has a small panda for a pet.

My biggest issue with fan arts is when they change drastically some of the features of the character, more specifically, skin If you just change the skin for the lighting and the environment I get it, but sometimes they will make a black characters so white/pink and a white characters almost black, I hate it

All these takes from people basically saying "I know what this race should look like and they look like this!" need to go out and actually see the races they are "representing", then maybe they will see that features such as skin tone, eyes, hair, and so on are not how they once were. We live in a world where people are a mixed bag of races, people aren't born with the stereotypical skin tones that used to be the norm for certain parts of the world, some kids have their hair color change part way through life (Don't quote me on this but this happened to myself, my younger brother and my older brother, we were all born blonde and then our hair changed to brunette as we got older), etc. So many things impact how we look and over the years they've changed greatly, so for anyone to go "This is how that race looks" is a huge racist flag in my mind because though people are part of a race they are still individuals who have their own looks, so trying to sweep them all until one look just feels like the greatest insult anyone could inflict on someone.

For real. They need to actually go to Asia for once. Not everyone looks like a stereotype. Many people actually have light skin and bigger eyes. Among many other attributes.

I'm 90% sure that the anime art style was mostly inspired by Betty Boop. She looks like a proto-anime character, was very popular among the American servicemen occupying Japan after WWII, and even started out with dog ears. People say anime was based on Disney cartoons, but those were not nearly as common in Japan in 1952 when Astro Boy was first published, and the only ones that had a human character that looked anything like an anime character were _Snow White_ (1937) and _Alice in Wonderland_ (1951). _Alice_ probably hadn't even made it to Japan by 1952, and hadn't even come out in the U.S. when Osamu Tezuka started making Astro Boy. But even if the art was inspired by Boop, Astro Boy is not a white person, and the anime style is based on him.

I always wonder what’s up with this wierd trend where artists who are like this have the audacity to promote their work at the end. So you’re just going to stir drama, act snobbish, play the victim and back-out when things don’t go your way. Then come back all in one go with your UwU

I disagree. Anime does look japanese. If you see the way these artist design and show off western characters. There are some artist who do showoff the facial differences between westerners and japanese people. Also there is nothing wrong with anime art design. Plus how in the world does anything Capcom, outside of stuff like Ace Attorney, look like anime in the slightest. Square Enix is similar where Final Fantasy hasn't ever looked like anime at all. Poeple are just hating on Japanese character design. Many things are done to make their characters stand out more. Plus they fail to realize many Japanese art had heavy disney influence in the early years but that has changed a ton

Honestly while I believe it’s fun in trying out drawing characters in different styles. I dislike how pompous and uppity these art fixers get and treat as if only their version matters. And that if you dare express criticism or a different opinion or dislike to it, then they get all childish and claim YOU are the problem.

Wow almost like all the art that people make for review personas don't look anything like them. So should all art be realistic now and we have to segregate what race people can draw base on their race?

From the perspective of a southeast-asian. Most Asian people living in their respective countries is Tribal and or Nationalist as all heck. Just in the Philippines we discriminate against each others tribes but in the essence of competitiveness and friendly chiding rather than being exclusionary and hateful. We compete with our neighbors in neighborhood level contest, we support the winner when they represent us in a city/municipality contest, being competitive and borderline agrresive with the audience from the other parts of the city. And then when a representative wins, we support them and the target of the aggression is the crowd from other cities and so on. Filipinos like the competitive spirit and win or loose we support the victor and encourage those that lost in the various qualifiers. We might find some tribal practices of our fellow countrymen odd or even off-putting but when difficulties arise, we are still neighbors. Anyway on to art, draw it the way the artist wants, draw it the way you want draw it in a still from a different franchise, it's all good. As long as you don't push your personal preference as "the only correct choice/style" I don't see a problem. Art is Art and let us all enjoy it.

In all honesty I don't think that op's rendition was a racist stereotype at all. In her example she wanted to depict a Japanese person because most anime characters are canonically Japanese. There's a reason why you can tell who's east Asian and who's not generally speaking. vs I think it's nice to see people want to show of a diversity of different ethnic features to represent all the different people in the world. But that's all the nice things I have to say about this person. I think it is very ignorant of them to say that the anime-style is inherently problematic because it doesn't accurately represent Japanese people. Tons of western cartoons portray all kinds of funky proportions that aren't true to life, and the biggest issue here is that people are telling actual Asian people how to draw themselves. Disgusting.
