First of all - THANKS ! -- I have a HP ProBook 4540s ; aftermarket power supply for it has voltage of 18.62 vdc on center pin. Dell power supply I have is at 19.70 vdc. ( voltages measured with voltmeter ) . I just cut the center pin wire as you did and connected the white wire ( + voltage ) to the pin through a 10K ohm resistor ( more than likely - not needed ). This puts the 19.7 vdc on the center pin. Worked like a charm . Followed your principles here - just adjusted since I had a good supply that I could double check the voltages. HP apparently does not keep one supply that will work on all the laptops - your pin voltage was about 5 volts

Dell uses a one-wire protocol which tells the laptop the charger model (Dell uses 60W for laptops and 100W for docking stations both with the same connector). Someone called "hclxing" has reverse engineered it and found a way to hack around it. The ROM inside the dell charger contains just the name "DELL" the wattage, voltage, amperage and serial number. However most laptops only seem to care about the wattage and the other stuff isn't read.

I was about to set up the voltage divider as per your directions. But when I sliced open the plug there was a small circuit board and I had wrecked it. So I thought bugger it, this is a technical expression here in OZ. And i just soldered the ground to the outer of the plug and +19 approx to the inner, the "data pin" fell out anyway. and it worked. This is with a HP laptop and a Toshiba PS. So thanks I wouldn't have even tried without your video.

To have a sturdier finish, your should get a piece of rigid plastic tube and cut it to the needed length, then introduce the cable in it (and push it apart in the cable) and a piece of shrinkable tubing that has bigger diameter. After doing what you did in this video, you cover it with the plastic tube, and then with the shrink to finish the job. This will give enough mechanical strength to it.

For my 19 v 3.16 a 2 wire charger i had to put 470k resistor betveen (3 wire hp plug) + and centre pin. Without it my processor was locked with speed 0.78 Ghz. I noticed that it doesnt need continious connection with that pin.. if i connect central pin and wire with resistor and then remove that wire then my computer works fine until i remove charger from computer( even if i turn off computer doesnt change it back -only if i remove charger from computer it gets 0.78 Ghz lock again). It doesnt matter if i connect that pin at startup or any time i want .. it detects something and goes from 0.78 Ghz lock to normal. i am not sure is it ok to leave that wire connected or its better to connect it only if processor gets locked at 0.78 Ghz?. @sorinturbut43133 жыл бұрын
The success story is in the video. If you want to do it yourself, you probably also understand what's being done, so why ask? If you don't understand, as the question seems to imply, you definitely shouldn't try. The odds of getting it wrong are pretty high. Still, FYI, a voltage divisor formed out of two resistors is installed so that a voltage similar to what the stabilizer part in the power brick expects to see.The choice of resistors isn't trivial. Their sum should yield a small enough current that they don't get warm. Yet they need to provide a small enough resistance that the input resistance of the sensing circuit remains trivial. The choice in the kOhm to tens or maybe hundreds of kOhms is acceptable. Also, their ratio needs to provide by the principle of the potentiometer those 6V out of the required output voltage (probably around 20V)
