If you are still using the old 1+2 battery switch and relying on your memory to switch it to the other battery for charging, you might want to consider this Blue Sea auto-charge system.

I prefer 1/2/both because of the increased control. You can add alternator protection to avoid risks of switching though off, or put the alternator power to a bank also eliminating this issue. Tie both banks together with a VSR. Same but better. IMO.

I love your set up. i bet it gives you confidence that your electronics will work when you need them to. Nothing is worse then when your fishing and your batteries go dead. It makes for a long day when your batteries go dead.

I and a big issue pop up a few weeks ago - had a battery short follows by a fireworks show and fire. Sunday afternoon while the sun was going down on the north cut of west cove. And the fish were biting! Lucky I just randomly saw my neighbor was down in Hackberry - and he towed me back home. NOBODY WAS ON THE WATER! Sent his wife a thank you flowers -Couple grand later and I am back on the water Lesson learned - last year I noticed I had some wires that “probably” needed service.

I do carry a handheld - I keep a and it in a waterproof boat bag with me. Always keep the boat keys in the bag, so I never forget. Also a first aid kit, sunscreen, bug spray, and a assortment of knives, tools, and boat docs just in case. Plus, various chargers for phone(s), spot lights and handheld. Takes up no room! And I typically do not store the bag in a rod box or storage box - so it’s always ready with my keys and wallet in case I do need to bail out. I never throw fishing gear in this bag. It’s for the boat and for safety! I was super lucky!

Hey BG G F, at about 6:50 you suggest a 20A fuse/breaker on the House battery. For the battery to be useful in the "combined" mode of the Blue Sea switch, the fuse/breaker needs to match the size of the Start Battery fuse/breaker. The 20A is then the one to the Panel distribution. Like you, I'm an Electrical Engineer. Good video, thanks.

Can both of you or one of you help. I'm a little lost and really want to install one of these. Dennis you are saying you will have issues if both circuit breakers from batteries aren't the same right? Also how would I know what size breaker my starting battery needs it doesn't have one and it's 175 hp? Lastly if I understand every lead wire needs a breaker so one on either battery at beginning and one off of switch going to fuse block? Is this right and what am I missing? Also without an ACR will I be ok with 2 different battery chargers one going to starter and one going to house? Thanks!

Yeah, i do that with my trolling motor battery, under the console. But my electronics really eat up the main battery, that's why I added one and isolated it. Thanks for stopping in !

'Appreciate that, Robert. As luck would have it, right after making this video, the main engine battery fizzled out. It was over 4 years old, so I was expecting it. Still.....the timing was humorous ! I might could have brought it back to life, but I wouldnt trust it again...so it got replaced. 4 years is about right for these batteries, anyway.

The negative black cable coming off the engine ...is it spliced to the ACR and spliced again to the negative battery terminal on battery 1 ...then spliced again for the negative terminal on battery 2 ...then into the fuse box ? Or is it separate black cables?

I have a question, I am getting ready to install 2 new fish finders, I whave watched several videos from everything hooking them up to the cranking motor with a cable system to a two bank battery system and Switch to what your showing now with a automatic system for detecting the battery usage. My question is do I need the switch if I am only installing a deep cycle battery to just run my electronics and keeping my cranking battery separate? From the deep Cycle battery I would run a 4 gage wire back to a fuse panel then on to my electronics and just charge that battery as I return from fishing as I do my trolling motor batteries? Just seems I could skip the switch and not have a need for it if I am just using a house battery for only electronic?

I'd probably use two kits. One kit for each bank of two batteries ...UNLESS Blue Sea has another model which would handle all 4. Not sure this one would take care of 4 batteries properly. It would require two sets of batteries in parallel....and that's not cool for this application because it would treat each set of two...as one, for charging purposes. My advice is to contact Blue Sea company and see what they advise., for they know the specs of all their products.. Wish I could be more help....but I bet they have the exact product you're looking for, Thanks for watching !

Great video but you made a little mistake. The only charging source of power is your outboard, so since the START battery is connected to the outboard's alternator via the switch it will ALWAYS be charging. You said when the ACR detects that the HOUSE battery is discharged it will switch over...how is it going to switch over?? It can connect the internal circuit to charge both START and HOUSE, but the START battery is always getting charged no matter what...according to your circuit.

Resistance provided by the ACR directs most of the current to the battery in need, is my theory. It's wired correctly.

@@BluzGuitarGuyFishing the START battery in your schematic is always connected to the alternator/generator in the motor, so that one gets charged no matter what..I am not sure how ACR works (Didnt get a chance to open one up, but it is mostly micro-controller controlled or a few zener diodes and transistors) that can possibly change the resistance so the second battery or HOUSE battery gets charged more or less.

It detects voltage levels and probably impedes the current flow to the one with the higher voltage a bit..( or even switches it to the other connection) ..thus allowing the other one to charge at a faster rate. When I was looking at it at first ...I said to myself "Huh ?"...LOL !

P.S.. This discussion reminds me of the old arguments we had in college of "Hole flow Vs. Electron flow"...lol ! I worked for two former NASA engineers at the time and they used to kid me about "hole flow"...because they said no one can prove an electron actually moves....they said the holes that the electrons filled moved in the reverse direction, causing the appearance of electron flow....which in theory is true....but not provable.
