As a native Hamiltonian (Birthplace of Tim Hortons) what you tasted possibly was a fraction of what Tim Horton's food used to be. Years ago it was exceptional now it becomes closer and closer to other fast food chains. The benefit of Tim Horton's in Canada is that as others have said they are everywhere especially here in Hamilton, You either have worked at a Tim Horton's or know someone who has if not you would be suspect of being a foreigner for most of the city you can walk a few blocks and you will find a Tim Hortons. We don't have a cheeseburger on our menu so that was a shock the fries were newly added I know recently most of Tim's renown comes from their donuts and caffeinated beverages breakfast menu items have been a welcome addition but Tim Hortons roots are in those items.

Tim Hortons is popular in Canada because in many small rural towns, it’s one of the only places opened late where half the town can go to hang out. I find it to be very heartwarming. Also the coffee is mild so people get a large cup to sip on for a long time, and pump it full of sugar and milk 🤣

Having worked at a few can confirm, It's where people go to sit and talk with people be it in the restraunt, in their cars or even in folding lawn chairs in or just off to the side of the parking lot. Would debate milk though, think the most popular generally is triple triple which is a good amount of cream and sugar. Old people in the afternoon, middle age after work and teenagers - early twenties from 9pm on.

That sounds nice, I wish I could just go to a cafe and hangout with people in the evening. There’s one cafe in my town that’s open late but it’s quite small compared to the size of my town. You won’t get half of a town of 25,000 in there. You’ll get like 30 people. It’s mostly just middle aged mums who go there to meet up in the evening. People don’t really hangout in the evening here, everything is shut.

What food does Canada have? Nanaimo bars and Poutine..lol. Apart from Quebec and it’s French culinary roots or First Nation food Canada has nothing, save the occasional hyper specific regional delicacy like Saskatoon Berry pie or whatever. Major cities in Canada like montreal or Toronto are known their culinary experiences but these are always ethnic restaurants serving the food of their culture. So unless you count Indian food or Chinese food made by Indians/Chinese people in Canada as “Canadian food” then tuff luck.

Some of the classics would be Apple fritter donuts and it's discontinued here but a dutchie donut could appeal to the British palate. The butter tarts is another old school favourite. I’m Canadian, born & raised, and I worked at Tim’s for a short time many years ago. I’d say the most popular/iconic items are the coffee, TimBits, donuts, and ‘iced caps’ (iced cappuccinos- a must-have if you ever go again!). Personally, I also love their steeped tea, but I assume as Brits you constantly drink tea and are therefore particular about it (?) in which case it probably wouldn’t be up to your standards 😋 In my opinion, Tim’s is best when they stick to breakfast foods- coffees, pastries, etc. They’ve tried to expand into lunch and dinner in recent years, but I don’t think it’s been that successful. Their lunch items are just sub-par, in my opinion… and it’s ironic that you loved the regular bread sandwich and the cheeseburger best, because I’ve never seen either of those in my life 😂 they definitely don’t sell the burger in Canada!!

McDonalds actually uses Tim’s old supplier for coffee. Tim’s coffee isn’t as popular anymore. They also used to do tons of fresh baked-in-store stuff, but that was years ago. Now it all comes in frozen. Plus you should have tried more sandwiches, like the BLT. I know that’s pretty common in Britain already, but for whatever reason my cousin was obsessed when he came to visit

I have no clue why people think the burnt Hortons coffee is the best. Maybe at one point in the 80's and 90's when it little competition other stores. But even then they had places like Second Cup.

@@NotMac Yes, but does that in itself make it a Canadian company? The foundation of that brand is their root beer which is American. I think we have memories eating at these establishments but they aren't Canuck.

Just another Canadian Jollybean coming out of the woodwork to tell you guys to try Canadian Timmies! I've never heard of the double cheeseburger but we have several classic soups and sandwiches, including the turkey bacon club. My favourite thing to get for lunch has always been the chili, which I can never find anymore... But in terms of donuts, all the glazed ones (including both the old fashioned and sour cream glazed) have always been my favourites.
