Monitors have become easier and much more complex all at the same time. Fixing CRTs was crazy. Fixing monitors and TVs in the modern era means doing something completely different. Having to replace laptop screens means buying a part or reconnecting a connector. Maybe a controller but much less likely.

I admit I kinda tailed off watching because I was so bored of PS5s and Switches... I'm a lot more interested in fixing laptops though and it's something I do myself. Different strokes though, I'll probably never fix a PS5 but I'm sure the people who do are very appreciative of Joey's videos.

@nooneelse1837 well, I mean... shocking is fine. It's the lethality that can happen if you aren't careful that was always scary. Especially when you've known people that didn't treat the repair process seriously or were in a rush. A modern TV or monitor is unlikely to kill you during the repair even if you're flippant about doing things in the right order.

Some laptops have ram slots and/or nvme slots on the other side of the board to keep the laptop thin. I had to remove the noard out of mine to install more nvme storage and ram. And the laptop is super thin.

Joey, I too used to be in the IT industry and used to go to a lot of Intel conferences and training sessions when they first launched their "verified by intel" whitebox laptops. They said that most damaged LCDs in laptops come from opening the screen by lifting at the corner. It's why most manufacturers actually include a very specific grab spot in the middle of the edge of the screen. Watching you open that screen at the beginning made my butt pucker when i saw how much you were warping the screen

For 11:20 question about copying the drive. I'm assuming you're talking about copying the OS across with all data on the drive and making it bootable. If that's the case, yes, you can do that. But it's really annoying because you do still need to manually create the boot partitions using command prompt using Diskpart. Sometimes it refuses to work too. If that's not what you are asking, and simply want to just copy everything for simplicity, definitely you can just copy everything over without any fancy program. Just treat it like any old flash drive when you plug it in, unless of course bootlocker is enable. Then nothing is copying over. Ya would have to turn the original computer on, and then copy the data to a flash drive.

Pro tip: Use an old credit card or gift card around the laptop open it :) Works great for me. Give it a bit of force when moving the card around.

There is also an adjustment screws to the side of the hinges in additions to the screws that locks it down to the bottom case that you can tighten and losen to ensure that the screen is open or closed correctly with the right tension.

The loose top lid is probably due to either loose screws or broken mounting points on the top lid (by the lcd). Pop the bezel off and clcheck the mounting points ... just saying. Once again I love everything you do. Great video.

Yep, brass inserts into plastic. Plastic will be cracked and the insert just floating free. Unfortunately no real fix aside from new chassis, sometimes you can melt the brass insert deeper with a soldering iron and use a longer screw but it's a temporary fix.

@lemagreengreen very true. You can also do the superglue and baking soda fix, but that is just as temporary. Works long enough to get a new top lid or bottom chassis (depends on what side is broken)

data recovery to me is the entire drive, if i take my ssd/hdd in to a tech for that purpose i want everything, maybe some people are specific "pictures, videos, documents" but for me id want the entire directory dumped from root. this new spin off series is quite interesting, will be nice to see some of the different things you work on. I'd be careful plugging random drives into my system, if any have a remote access terminal bundled in there or rootkit, you're inviting hostiles into your hearth, maybe worth setting up a vm for testing drive and scanning them before cloning?

Yep, data recovery to me is the entire thing as well. Just use dd or something. I guess it depends though, some people might be more specific but I can't see the harm in just dd'ing the entire thing and they can work out what they wanted from it.

Data recovery to me is if the HDD or device has become inaccessible and specialist tools are used to retrieve the otherwise inaccessible data. Otherwise it is just cloning the HDD/SSD (I use Macrium for this) or dragging and dropping the users' folders to just get their data, without any programs or anything.

There is nothing more scary than a "spicy pillow". As for the disconnected battery, that connector could have loosened over time (due to material fatigue, physical stress, temperature changes).

Liking this focus on laptops - hope you can fit more in regularly - maybe even try one or two on Profit or Loss?!? Biggest benefit of laptops is that most of them come with some repair options other than soldering but hopefully you'll get one or two buggered units you can burn as well :-)

Nice fixes! Looked like easy and straightforward ones this time. IMO it is always good to have spare RAM (in both DDR3 and DDR4, possibly DDR5 now too) as well as spare hard drives and SSDs. With some laptops - Dells especially - you have to have a charger that can send a special signal to the motherboard, so the laptop can detect what wattage the charger is. An underpowered charger will not charge a battery and may result in poor CPU performance. I agree that it is always a good idea whilst you're inside a laptop, to check and/or tighten the hinge screws, as these can unscrew themselves over time and is what causes the hinges to snap/break. Also check the RTC/CMOS/BIOS battery (the CR2032 one) as well as the fan and thermal paste. Overheating is what will probably kill your motherboard, if you have a dead motherboard.

when you take out cmos battery , take out the main battery too , even if cmos battery is removed, the cmos gets powered from AC/main battery too

The hinge on the lenovo is normal, thats just how cheap laptops are build.

Usually on Dell and asus laptops the screws for the hinge under the bezel around the screen come loose and cause the floppy screen you have on the Lenovo, might be worth checking 😊

It is interesting to see you working on this, knowing that you aren't exactly a full on PC guy. So you have a mountain to climb to know the equipment well to start with. There is much more to it than you might expect. Computers, particularly laptops, have evolved in certain ways for reasons, and a lot of it has to do with packaging and heat handling. The thing with laptops as a repair business is that they are often quite cheap to buy but they have a lot of fairly expensive ways to be broken, and unique often to each machine. Custom motherboards, custom cooling, and so on. So even very similar laptops from the same company are often internally very different. So it is often hard to get parts as salvage to fix other units. Also, the resale value is often quite varied as well. A slight change in the processor, the screen, or a number of other parts makes it go from worthless to a goldmine. The other thing is that you will find a lot of non working have had a coffee to drink or similar. So it is a wild market. It is also a lot to work on, and the board are often a lot finer than what you are use to... you might want another level of magnification! ;)

1st laptops bios got set to legacy mode, and windows was installed on the computer when the bios was in uefi mode. And yeah it just wont post till you reset cmos. Had this problem with a friend a little while back.

Oh Me and Lenovo have a wild history.. So many MANY bios issues with multiple laptops, I had a laptop once that I've re-flashed bios once a week just to boot it up for well over 3 months.. At one point I made a hotswap connector for the bios chip and could do it within like 5 minutes.

I'm a former Dell tech - The issues you had with the first one is called no POST. Power on Self Test. So it was failing POST. Usually, when this happens, with the power LED cycling like you've described, the POWER led or the CAPS, NUM, FN can flash in a particular code that lets you know when it failed. If you search Dell POST codes you'll find a massive list of things, could even find it for that specific service tag. My expectation was the memory needed reseated. Moving it to the other slot did that. CMOS battery is a very, very rare way to fix an IT problem for a consumer laptop. That's a common fix for those who don't know what they are doing and mess around with the BIOS to overclock or something. Removing the CMOS resets the BIOS to factory default, which is why people think its a good place to start. It often can be for non-OEM devices.

new cmos battery can be the problem if a machine's been sat on a shelf unused and with the main battery out of charge for a few years but normally it's very obvious (some sort of warning message about settings reset or clock being wrong on first boot)

what does it mean when the battery is new but the motherboard wont hold the settings and wont start windows,but it will start fine when i go in to bios and save and exit on every cold start,it will start fine when i restart the machine in windows.

@@runeingebretsen8378 Not remembering BIOS settings sounds like a CMOS issue. If it's not a laptop though? Sometimes there can be jumper pins on the motherboard. It's like 4 little pins, with a small plastic piece covering two of them. This piece might be set to reset CMOS, which you'll need to move depending on the manufacturer.

Nice idea, Joey, to fix some laptops, too :) But keep in mind, that Dell sometimes requires original charger/PSU, and/or batteries. Because they are a**holes. Lenovo does not neec that, but it also has a center pin to determine how much power the charger/PSU can supply.

I think Dells protocol has been pretty well figured out by the Chinese at this point though, third party stuff always seems to work fine. If the 1wire signal is missing though you will get a message at boot saying charger type cannot be identified.

FYI if you really wanna do janky but working CMOS battery replacemant on one of these and you aldready have a CR2032 then just break the contacts off of the dead battery and tape them on the new one. its jank but so far ive had a laptop with a battery like this for atleast 5 months now and its doing just fine

The hinges for Lenovo are broken. Culprit would be around the display part where the metal could have been bent. That happens if the axis of the hinges are stuck

Clients always forget something when you ask what data they want to keep. If the drive is functional scan it for viruses, put it in an external caddy and give it to them. Then they can't complain you missed something because they have it all. If they want it on optical media keep the drive because they will forget something.
