The Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) is an annual event organised by the Ministry of Education to celebrate the diverse arts talents of our youths in their co-curricular activities (CCA).
Bands may choose to perform either Movement I "Sarabande" or
Movement II "Gavotte" from Two Contrasts for Concert Band as their set piece.

SYF isn't a competition. It is an event where band from schools get judged by professionals. And then be grouped according to their performance based on that 15mins on stage.

It's not about whether it is interesting or boring than the other. It is more to the executing of the piece as a band. It also depends on the choice by conductors. They will usually choose pieces that would go well with the band. To me, both pieces are equally interesting and difficult to play. A lot of things that needs to be polished. :)

Sarabande requires more focus. My conductor says that Gavotte is much more easier to play because it is faster and there are more things to play so it's not so hard to lose focus. Whereas, Sarabande has a lot of bars rest and it is easy to lost count. Anyways, jiayou people!! All the best!!

My instructor chose Gavotte for our band although we haven't seen the score for Sarabande because she knows that our tuning is weak (: When I heard the recording of Sarabande initially it sounds boring. But after repeated replays I realized it's actually emotional & slightly more difficult to play than Gavotte. Sarabande needs good intonation & phrasing while Gavotte, on the other hand needs good rhythm & articulation. ^^ Good luck everyone! Lets strivee

It doesnt matter which is nicer. It depends on how the band executes the two pieces. It also depends on the ability on the band. Usually the conductor will dry run both pieces and choose the most suitable one for the band. Anyway, my band will be playing Sarabande as we feel that it would contrast to our choice piece. Even though some of us feels that Gavotte is nicer, we respect our conductor's decision. Saranbande is equally hard to be played. A lot to polish on intonation and phrasing. :)

Yes indeed, Sarabande stresses more on the band's tone, intonation and musicality. Which is what Singapore bands are lacking of. It is also a piece which stresses more on the conductor's ability in bringing the flavour out of the band. Good Luck :)
