A local supermarket used to sell what they called a "Tin Miner's Pasty" where it was mostly traditional Cornish filling and one section of apple pie filling. It was glorious. Probably far more common actually in and around Cornwall, though.

I don’t really know the grocery scene of San Jose but I did live in a coastal town over the hill and I’m not sure their bread scene was that great either but that was also a place where gluten free really took off as a diet and cure all. It does help plenty of people but bread is fantastic if you can digest it!

This reminds me of the old British show "Peep Show." David Mitchell's fastidious character ate a savory and sweet toast combo for breakfast: brown bread with Marmite as a "main course" and white bread with marmalade for "dessert."

"I'm gonna throw that Gherkin in, oh yeah!" Aw, you old romantic! Sandwiches of HERstory is a lucky, lucky woman! Ugh! I love a Cornish pasty! I had a one once in Cambridge at the one place that wasn't serving high tea (too hungry!). It was saag panner with curry lentil and apple raisin chutney! Two days later, back in London, we were craving it that so much after and evening's pub crawl that we half-seriously considered getting a train back to Cambridge before realizing that it would have been long closed. So it was street pizza with (fittingly!) coleslaw!

Barry, I love ya. However, my instant reaction is that you MUST eat from one side to the other in its entirety. First half, with occasional bites of the pickle, while saving a bite towards the sweet end to “mingle the two courses”. Then, finish up with bites of extra dates throughout dessert.
@Collin_Calling3 ай бұрын
Second thought: eat the whole pickle before first bite, then eat the entire date after last bite.

Funny I just bought Trader Joe’s Brioche hot dog buns not knowing it was cut on top in the style you were describing. I don’t know the east coast style but this may work as a substitute as a similar and more accessible item on the west coast.

Hey I like the idea , but I'm going to use a long French roll, half hot cheesy chicken Parmesan(guts broiled on an oven safe dish you can slide the goey contents freely), the second half cold cut Italian style with all the fixings divided by a handful of pepperoni which will be made crispy first

"new england" buns are literally just hot dog buns sliced on the top instead of the side. next time youre in a supermarket that sells pepperidge farm bread look for the "top sliced" hot dog buns and thats exactly what is used for lobster rolls. im not from new england but my family and i tried it 1 day and never went back to side sliced buns

Oh, couldn't be bothered to plus up the sweet side. And you had the date RIGHT. THERE. lol. This is definitely a fun idea. I might have to make a sandwich like this - and yeah, it should be on a sub roll, I think. I'm thinking it might be fun to have corned beef and saurukraut for the savory side, keeping basically this for the sweet side. What a great sandwich!

Ive lived in NJ my whole 54 years and have always had access to both hot dog rolls and split top NE rolls (which are hot dog rolls cut vertically down the middle instead of horizontally). They are almost entirely the same thing. If you are TOTALLY anal and can only get hot dog buns but HAVE to have a NE style bun, then shave a sliver of the top of the hot dog bun off. Gee whiz.
