The Warrior Mountain Trading Post, which is north on Hwy 33 going toward Moulton, has maps of the Bankhead Forest and Sipsey Wilderness. The Bankhead Forest ranger station is south on Highway 33 just entering Double Springs.

Thanks for sharing, I didn’t know about those two camps. I am going on a trip from Ms to North Carolina in my old Jeep and overland trailer . I am camping free for most of the trip , the only camp that I’m paying for is Milehigh in NC near Maggie valley. I will stay near Payne Lake in Oakmulgee Wildlife Area AL just below Tuscaloosa . There’s several free camps there . I am traveling back roads , I find it very calming and more interesting. I’ll go up AL near Fort Payne and into TN where there is plenty of free camping, I picked the Tellico plains area near Indian Boundary Campground. . No cell service No Problem , I can’t wait

Thanks! Those are both nice. I’m still looking for some sites close to water with fishing in central Alabama. Planning to check out Payne Lake soon (not quite free, but cheap if no hookups).

That’s an awesome area , I’ve got the vehicle use map and we scouted while staying at Payne Lake. There’s free camping at the next road past Payne lake . As you turn on the next road there’s a board there with free maps . I’d stay at Payne lake one night and scout the area . Call the Ranger station and they will tell you the best ones to stay at and the ones to stay away from. Although none of the free sites are near water they are pretty neat . Payne Lake is very cheap and hard to pass by . Running water and showers are hard to say no to.

I've been to McDougle Camp before. It's convenient to shopping and restaurants in Moulton. (About 10 miles north.) McDougle Camp may be hard to find because of lack of any signs on the road. Not far from here is Grassy Lake Campground which was $5 ($2.50 with Senior Pass) last time I was there. There is water in the day-use area near Grassy Lake Campground. Historic Pine Torch Church is also not far from here. It is a log-cabin construction which is still used occasionally.

Sorry, I mislabeled the campground. It's Brushy Lake (not Grassy Lake) Campground. From McDougle Camp, go north on Hwy 33 to County Road 70. Pass Pine Torch Church. From Co Rd 70, turn left onto Co Rd 71. ( There's a sign for the campground.) You will see the day use area first and the campground is just beyond that on the right.

Fair warning if you notice the sign says hunter camp meaning it’s meant for hunters. It does get busy during deer season, especially during gun deer season. I’ve been there during deer season, this camp was made for the intended purpose of giving hunters a place to stay so they can get up early in the morning and be hunting as the sun comes up. If this place fills up just because you want to make a video about “free camping” and totally ignore the fact it’s for hunters you are really doing them a disservice. Non hunters can camp anywhere because they’re not getting up at 4 am to hunt.

I heard you say free free camping. But i don't recall how long you could camp??? I have a class c, I like to campout for at least 30 days or more in arow!!!

If you camp for 30 days or more in a row using free camping locations, I'd like to know where. Most stay limits on federal public lands are limited to a maximum of 14 days.

Are these two spots big rig friendly? 36ft 5th wheel
@LivingOurDreamNow2 ай бұрын
I would say no, but the judgment is yours to make.
@susanjeffries592 ай бұрын
McDougle Camp is probably not going to work. I have never seen a big rig here. Grassy Lake Campground might be a bit better, but not all sites would work for a big rig.
