THANK YOU! I was so thrilled to receive the notification of a new Zeppelin review! Kind of ironic as I heard this song while driving to do errands today. Trust me, I turned this one up while driving! One of my favorites as I love everything about this song. You both were spot on with your comments. Mia, you blew me away with your take on the lyrics of the song. As I have said before, you are very mature for your age. Juliet, you are so right about cruising around and singing this song and playing it loud too! Loved all of your comments. I am happy that you both liked the song. What is not to like? LOL! By the way, Juliet, I had on the same Zeppelin shirt as you today! We are Zeppelin twins! It has been some time since the two of you have reacted to Zeppelin so again, thank you for doing so. I am glad your dad took notice of my request for more, during your Halloween live chat. THANKS DAD! Keep going with the Zeppelin reviews. There are still many great songs to listen to, believe me and all with a different sound. You will not be disappointed, I promise. Have a great weekend my lovely girls. Love & Blessings! 💖

Oh yeah ladies, now you're really cookin' with the great Zeppelin!! Mia - you're actually spot-on when you said Robert Plant's voice with Zep's music is "romantic". I can honestly tell you that during my younger days, the ladies I dated ALL thought Zeppelin was romantic! Juliet - You're so right about Jimmy Page evoking so many personalities with his guitar and his style! Great reaction, ladies! You two rock! Love to ya both! Have a great weekend!

Jimmy Page had heard Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well' & loved the way the vocals were separate from the music & so that is what influenced the structure of this song. The title came from the fact that a black labrador was often seen wandering the grounds of Headley Grange where they were writing & recording the album. They would often feed it & when they didn't have a title for this song they thought they would just call it 'Black Dog'.

I bet Suzy will be happy with this! A good, well reasoned reaction to a great track by one of the greatest rock bands there has been. It may just be the fact that I have got back home at a bit past 2am, but ... a few years back I listened to a Led Zep CD of remastered tracks and, I hate to say, I prefered the originalsas the remastered ones generally sounded too clinical to me, but this track sounded fine! As a passing point of, maybe, related trivia, Winston Churchill used to refer to his periodic bouts of depression as his 'Black Dog'

Wow girls! Some good insights into LZ. The more times you listen to it the more your insights might change. It just amazes me how many incredibly good songs LZ has in their arsenal. At any concert every person was going to be disappointed they didn't play something they love. It was "Since I've Been Loving You". But they played this both times and it was spectacular. Since you mention Bonham on drums watch a video called Why Was John Bonham so good on KZbin. Not to react but to see how insanely good he was.

Also, what I love about this song is that it shows how Led Zeppelin used tempo changes, stops and starts and different simultaneous rhythms during their songs. The drums and Jimmy Page's solos going at different rates, sometimes rolling and sometimes stopping or slowing down. Today's music is all at the same speed it starts at. There are no real changes or complexities in the music. It lacks both soul and variation. And then of course you have the sound quality difference. The stereo touches added by the production. Jimmy Page was a master at getting the right sound.
@wpl82753 жыл бұрын
One more thing, Led Zeppelin 4 is legendary. It was ranked 58th best album out of the top 500 albums of all time by Rolling Stone. With only 8 songs it is anchored on both sides by Stairway to Heaven and When The Levee Breaks. Both songs are 7 minutes long. There is a famous scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High where it's playing while they are in a car and the characters talk about it.

Robert Plant once explained the title for this song, that it was a working title named after an old black retriever dog that was around the recording studio that used to stray off to copulate with a local bitch and then was too tired to make his way home, so the dog needed to be carried home. "It wasn't (about) a girl in Detroit, it was a black dog."

How did John Bonham get so good at playing the drums? Growing up, his was a brick layer for his father, also had a strong interest in drumming such that he banged on all sorts of pots, pans, and the like. Then his father got him his first kit. John basically studied the jazz drummer greats of the time by listening to their records. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and many others. He applied the jazz techniques to rock drumming. It took years and his brick laying and other physical activity gave him arms more strength than the average player. That's why he could hit the drums so hard!
