Oh... and John could NEVER be a Walmart greeter...those poor people coming in to shop would never make it past the door. Great video guys. Half and Half has always been flavored with Cardamom, Coriander, Cherry, and Cinnamon. The current recipe is actually the same, but when you add almost 100 years to it... its bound to be different! I never had 1920s Half & Half... but I have some from the 30s and 40s. Velvet too... I've had Velvet from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s... and today. All of it delicious, and the new stuff is nearer in spirit to the older than the 70s and 80s. Tonquin is still used in many british tobaccos like 1792 Flake by SG and many Lakeland essence blends by G&H. Thanks for the shoutout too! Oh... and they sold 16oz glass humidor jars and cans of many old blends!

It’s a bit newer than ‘20s, those tin graphics are later ‘40s to early-mid ‘50s. You can date it more exactly by the series number on the tax stamp. 110 is 1940, 115 is 1945, 120 is 1950, etc.

Nope didn't buy a pound... I wish! Just bought the same tin as John got. Doing well Sarge , in fact just mowed the lawn. Easy does it as they say :) Also, a post on a forum of a guy who used to smoke half & half back in the day said he recreated it with a master blender and they used deertongue. I bought some Crooner because I had never had any deertongue, and didn't know what it tasted like. The vintage H&H was so dry that you couldn't identify any of the herb by eye. I think it has that in the vintage H&H according to my taste. I do believe it also has what John says too. Lastly, I did rehydrate the tobacco and I think it's better dry! Great video Gentlemen!
@Matches8606 жыл бұрын
I must have dreamed it LOL. In the meantime, I have seen old tubs of it so I know they are out there.
@nicholascox94726 жыл бұрын
No worries John :) I did buy a pound of something at the time, just not that. I was thinking about the flavoring more... it very well could be that because this guy I was talking about couldn't get any of that Bean to flavor the half& half , he used deertongue because it's similar in flavor and available
@dougowen98736 жыл бұрын
"Welcome to Walmart, get your s--t and get out". Sarge, I love it! I might try that at the Cargohold with certain customers but then, maybe not. But I do understand the sentiment. Yeah as we get a bit older the tolerance meter threshold gets set lower and lower.
@dougowen98736 жыл бұрын
Portland Pipe Smoker did a great instructive video on Tonquin bean awhile back. I think one reason for the change in flavor of blends like Half and Half in addition to the absence of the old flavorings is that it is just so old that the burley and Virginias are more flavorful having aged for decades. Thank god you guys finally found a tobacco that is actually older than me. You know another reason these blends change over the years is that numerous companies end up buying the name and changing the formula, usually for the worse. Each new owning entity will usually cheapen the product's quality simply because they are counting on the nostalgia value that the trademark brings to the product.That is why the across the counter brands like Half and Half, Mixture 79, Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Sir Walter Raleigh etc. don't taste nearly as good as they did 50 years ago. By the way if you want a real Tonquin bean hit take a taste of Samuel Gawith's 1792 Flake, a very strong flavor of Tonquin.

I seeded some current Half and Half with some flakes of Gawaith 1792 for the tonquin flavor. Good results from pulling out the flakes and smoking separately. Also loading Half and Half separate from 1792. Sort of get a War Horse Bar taste from the 1792. The Half and Half developed a bit more body. Curious to see what more age will develope on this blend.

Got all of my late brother's pipes recently. Been a cigar smoker for over 30, but now am dabbling with pipes. Naturally went to the interwebs to educate myself. Replied to one of Savenelli's vids and found this channel. Wish you all had told us what it smelled and tasted like. Tobacco was a lot different in the past one would imagine.
@Matches8605 жыл бұрын
Both the taste and the smell are so difficult to describe, especially the smell because one of us has to remember to try and get a wiff from the other guy's pipe. As far as the taste, there is usually a mustiness from age, but beneath that you can pick out the leaf and topping. There is certainly a difference, but so difficult to describe.

Coumarin by itself will not thin blood but has to be chemically altered to do so. The issue stemed from animal studies that coumarin had carcinogenic effects which I think despite how well intentioned at the time turned out to be overblown due to certain mice that metabolized it differently than humans. Nevertheless, the industry in the early-mid nineties eliminated refined coumarin from tobacco products. This was the issue of the infamous legal battle between Jeffery Wygand & Brown & Williamson that was made into a movie. BTW, tonkin beans can be readily bought, I bought a few from Amazon. You can even by refined coumarin which I think is intended for candle makers and perhaps perfumers. They are interesting and are extremely aromatic especially when grated; Scents of strong almond extract, cola, light spice(cinnamon, nutmeg) and undertone of cherry. Cheers.
