There was a time when good, simple, and consistent blends were the standard and the ideal. That little tin is a relic from those days. Nowadays, people confuse "complexity" with "quality". Great video fellas!

Thanks for the shoutout guys, glad you are enjoying the slices. I smoked both the ready rubbed and the slices back in the 1970's and the slices were much fuller and deeper than the ready rubbed, I think because the slices were packed very tightly and aged more quickly, also it may be that the Edgeworth folks simply used a different recipe for the two different cuts. You are absolutely right about the deterioration of quality over the years especially in the old drug store label tobaccos. Back in the day brands such as Carter Hall, Mixture 79, Edgeworth, Granger all were much higher quality than after those labels were sold off to larger conglomerates who frankly did not care a whole lot about putting out quality blends, they used much cheaper burley in the newer blends(probably white burley as opposed to red burley which is a much higher grade leaf with a much deeper flavor). It was also interesting hear the different take the two of you had on the flavors emitted by the tin I sent you. Different flavors for different taste buds, I find my taster seems to go more with the honey and chocolate road that Vinnie took but again, different strokes for different folk, that is why there are so many blends out there. For example I have customers who swear latakia tastes like soap where others, including yours truly loves the full peaty flavor. Anyway glad you had fun with this stuff. It is special.
@Matches8607 жыл бұрын
What a terrific experience it was Doug, thank you again! Yeah, this is my third time puffing with Vinnie and I have come to learn that his ability to describe flavors is sharper than mine and I always seem to be a minute or two behind him as a rule. I think he nailed the Thanksgiving Day blend from Peretti as you'll see in the comments of that video.

You young fella's missed out on some good tobacco's from days of yore. My first pipe was in 1959. At that time I could only hope to save enough for a 'big' can of Prince Albert and my usual was drug store otc's like Edgeworth, Blue Boar, Half & Half, Holiday and etc.. Maybe it is an old mans memory BUT they were just as good as some of the expensive special tobacco's sold today, maybe better. A pocket can of Prince Albert was two bits and could last three days. Ah yes, memories - thank you both for a brief trip down the lane. God bless Jim
@Matches8607 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah! You'll never hear me bash those classics! Thanks for the comment Sir James!
@Casa1910steve7 жыл бұрын
Sir James - WOW. I haven't thought of Blue Boar since my Grandfather was around. I remember him getting upset inside a Perry's Drugs (remember them?) once because they said they stopped making/selling it, or something along those lines. That was probably in about 1985 or so. BUT, Sir James - I do know that Cornell & Diehl make a blend that he really enjoyed called 'Morley's Best'. It was rumored to be an exact (or very, very close) match to the old Blue Boar recipe. I just looked online, and SmokingPipes dot com sells it in bulk - $19.06 a half pound. ...and I don't think ANY of us younger pipers would disgrace your vintage memories. If anything, we'd probably light up a bowl, and ask you to tell us more. America simply isn't the same; possibly least of all, our tobacco industry. Thanks for posting about Blue Boar - that was a great memory burner. 👍

Nice video with you both. It motivated me to respond. I began pipe smoking in 1955 with a corn cob and a pouch of Edgeworth Ready Rubbed. Back then it came in the same type of pack as Carter Hall comes in now. It was robust and just loaded with flavors and nuttiness. You didn't have to search for the flavors, they were right there clear as a bell. Over the years I have tried all of the different reintroductions and copies right up to the latest from Lane Limited. While these blenders do a good job of trying to recreate that old blend, they're just not the same as the original. I think one of the reasons is because we never thought of aging pipe tobacco back then. We just bought a pouch, smoked it and bought another pouch, always fresh. I tried aging this blend and have concluded that aging absolutely makes it flat, with a total loss of flavor. Some tobaccos improve greatly with aging, but not Edgeworth Ready Rubbed. I have several jars that have been aging for almost a year and I must say that it is just about totally lost. Also, back then Edgeworth had a blend they called "Edgeworth Executive Mixture" which came in a white foil pouch. It was supposed to be the crowning glory from the house of Edgeworth. It was quite nice but didn't seem to sell well. Thanks to you and sarg for the video, I enjoy them all.......

This may have gone in and out of production but I remember trying this in the early to mid 90's and it wasn't vintage stuff so it was being produced back then by Lane or made in Europe for Lane. Edgeworth RR I can remember went through a few different production iterations so, it is difficult to compare to the premium slices. These slices had a bit of dark-fired leaf where the domestic stuff didn't plus, like almost all burley it is thoroughly cased. You guys are the envy of many a pipe smokers who would kill for this stuff. It's puzzling why Lane hasn't brought back this premium slice version.
