Great comparison. I've a 1976 Twin Reverb I've had since new and over the years have had many different speakers in it. I've gone from the stock Oxfords to a pair of EV SRO's (unimaginably heavy weight) as well as the JBLs. I've since gone back to using a pair of custom re-coned Oxfords and couldn't be happier. It is amazing the abuse my amplifier has endured over the last 45 years we've been together and yet she 's still one of the strongest amps in my modest collection, also the heaviest! Again, great review/comparison Johan, thank you.

Fantastic demonstration of how great these two amps sounds. Different sonic colors of greatness. Did Simon get one of those "corporate" jobs where he had to cut his hair? LOL! I love the way Simon plays rhythm guitar, very funky, and it works to the strengths of his woody sounding Strat. On the amps, well, for me it wasn't even close. The blackface amp sounded beautiful and classic everywhere. The most I could say for the silverface was that some of the tones with the SG were usable. But clearly everyone appreciates sounds in their own way. Very interesting comparison of two benchmarks, great video, thanks!

Felt like the bass was a little bit out of control on the silverface and that the mids were lacking. My feeling is that it probably has a lot to do with the speakers. Would be fun to hear those amps with the speakers switched! This video makes me realize that i need to find another 60's Jensen speaker (and recone the one I've found asap) to restore my blackface twin to his full potential. Great video as usual! Thanks!

Great work, Johan!!! The silverface have more clarity on highs and middle highs, it really shines over the blackface, the blackface is really warm on mids and low mids, I like it better in that area, for the low end the silverface is more to my taste, it does not go too far as the blackface. Both great!!!

So interesting- I had fairly different impressions. Apart from the very first comparison, the BF clearly, to me, had much stronger high-mids and a far greater presence to the sound with less woofiness in the bass. I have a SF which I'm in the process of doing a "BF mod" on, where you swap out a dozen or two capacitors/resistors from a kit. I'm thinking some Jensons should be next on the list!

As always Johan great work. I prefer the sound of the blackface probably why I have a BF Deluxe. The Silverface to my ear doesn't have quite the spank and sparkle that the BF does. I probably will never have the opportunity to play a twin to the point of breakup they are just too loud for what I play. The sound of these amps at the point of breakup did not sound good to my ear for chords but for solo stuff pretty awesome. The tremolo sound on the Silverface I though sounded better. When you were playing clean I said now that is the sound I love great tone and playing buddy. Thanks Johan for your work very much appreciated.

Blackface '65. Every time. To me, that's what a Fender sounds like. You must have been rattling the roof, Johan, to get natural breakup on these Twins. Great sounds. From both the amps, I hasten to add. The Silverface with the JBLs has a lot to commend it, and in isolation, it would be hard to complain. It's just that the '65 has that magic, for me.

Thinking about converting my 74' silverface pro reverb into blackface. It's got jensens but I've always wanted to try JBLs. The amp seems really really woofy/bassy but I've also never used more than a 1x12 most of my life so maybe it's something I have to get accustomed too. It does seem very sterile. Is that a result of the new jensens needing to break in or silverface specs?

Great tones from both amps really. I was wondering if the speakers were the biggest element in the tone difference this tine... what if you played the silverface through the blackface speakers - would the overall tone be more similar? The jbls, as far as I know, are quite different and could accont for nost of the changes. Great speakers can make almost any amp do great things, and bad ones can similarly kill great amp tones...which is why I would always take a head over a combo any day and play through tried and tested cabs and speakers. Soo I am lucky enough to own a couple of really cool amps a 1961 licensed by Fender Regal r1160 , a 1965 pre CBS Super reverb, a 1973 Fender Super 6, a 1964 fender reverb unit, a Marshall JCM 800, a Peavey Duel 212, a very cool Charvel Ch600 solid state amp, and last but not least a very small 15/5 watt all tube combo amp Made in China lol by a company called stage right, Wich BTW I threw a alnico gold in it even tho it came with a decent stock celestion 70/80. Also for an honorable mention I picked up a 1966 Cordo Vox accordian amp that has input Jack's for guitar bass or vocals. Long story short...I've found each amp has it's own magic, and that speakers will make or break the equation. Having said that...My blackface super reverb is the man for "that" blues tone, but nothing compares to my super 6 for that clean chimey , glassy tone, it is to me like sun shining on clear water on a summers day, it is my Surf amp. Both amps shine at what they do. My Regal is a time capsule in a bottle, instant late 50s early 60s Chicago blues. My Peavey is my Country Gent, My JCM 800 my "Hairy Beast" , the Charvel is my late 80s tone box, and that damn Cordo Vox is more Plexi than you can imagine can't believe what a find(10 bucks, and came with two 1966 Jensen c12rs!) The funny thing is the amp I play daily in my living room......MY CHINESE MADE, CELESTION GOLD LOADED STAGE RIGHT! I love twins, I think a small part of the difference may have been because the Blackface was on casters and the Silverface was right on the floor giving it more low end 1/2 space coupling. I play all my twins turned up on their side (input side up), better dispersion, clarity, and less boominess. Jerry Garcia did this too (alembicized silver face and blackface), mostly to get less reverb spring crashing on shaky stages since he used external cabinets, but those cabinets (with JBLs) were always oriented vertically, sometimes 3x12 or 4x12. He had different than usual setting too, bright off, 8.75 treble 2.5 bass, 4.25 mid. The more I play twins the more I gravitate to those kind of settings. Try them up on their sides, you might like it.

Its interesting how differently we hear things. I was thinking the strat was too bright through the silver face with the JBLs and the SG was a bit muddy through the blackface.

Hi, Sam! Whatsup? Agree with you, but I think, those amps are good enough for all. But I have no normal monitors. In Sunday I want to buy some stuff for my home-studio, and then I'll be more criticaly charged.:-) I hope, I will pay not to much high prices. -)

Black face with Jensens gives a true Rolling Stones vibe. While the silver face compliments the SG really well giving it more top end and removing muddiness.

Johan: do you know if there is any difference in the circuits? The Blackface sounds absolutely epic! Classic American growl.

Pulling out the V1, changing the V6 and taking out two tubes, unplugging one speaker? Does this mod really work? Really love the twin sound but would love to be able to play without headphones.

Nice video! What are the volume levels? Heard they are almost impossible to overdrive because of their super loud nature.. ?

Yes, it is very difficult to get a natural overdrive from a Twin. He had to have been at ear bleeding levels to get that much breakup! 🤘🎸

Robby Krieger says he used a Twin Reverb, cranked, on the later Doors albums. The distorted tone he gets sounds great. I always thought it was a pedal, like a Tone Bender or a Maestro. They must have had a way to isolate the guitar.

Bother amps sound great, they bother have a very unique sound individually and would sound awesome in any performance, the strat and silver face have the stones tone, I actually enjoyed the sound of the silver face as it’s more punchy and earthly sounding with the clean setting, although the blackface did sound better overdriven with both guitars, those speakers were rattling quite a bit as well, just age I guess 😎🎶🎶🎶

I owned a '70 Silverface. The speakers blew and I replaced them with JBLs. I wish I had gotten a Vibrolux or Pro instead. It was very difficult to get the tone I wanted at anything other than arena-level volumes. There were very few pedals back then and they were expensive. It would handily keep up with a Marshall stack however. It was stolen in '74. In '71 or '72 they added a master volume. I saw Derek and the Dominos with Duane Allman and Duane used a Silverface Twin with JBLs and his cherryburst LP. IIRC, he didn't get the tobacco sunburst LP until the spring/summer of '71.

Seems like the '71 with JBL's was quieter and muddier, while the '65 with Jensens was louder and crisper. Can you confirm that the volume and tone knobs were set identically?

As many others have said, the SG sounds great through the silverface, but a bit indistinct on the blackface. The Strat sounds great through the blackface, but really scooped on the silverface. Is this down to the speakers entirely? Also bonus question... I have a SS fender 85, any idea what amp this sounds closest to? It's an amazing little thing. Spectacular video as always, feel free to disregard a lot of my rambling.
